Dan and Dirks talked about Rogers sort of fooling the Rangers about which way he was going, but the key for McGonigle was that Burger just completely abandoned 1st base to run at Rogers instead of throwing the ball. Burger had gone so far across the diamond that KM could go most the way to 2nd safe in the knowledge he could beat Burger back to 1st if a throw did go to 2nd. Bad play for the Rangers all around.

I wonder if teams passed on McGonigle because he was from the Philly area.

I know teams passed on Mike Trout because he was from Jersey...not far from Philly because there was this belief that trout didn't face tough competition.  Wonder if the same was true of McGonigle.

But high school kids are really just a crap shoot.

He played in national showcases, he'd proven himself against the best competition. His hit tool was highly regarded, but nobody was projecting he'd hit for the power he has because he's 5'8.

We never know how any particular prospect is going to do in any particular system until we actually see them go there. Certain types of hitters thrive in certain systems and get ruined in others. Focusing on proper development is just as important for an organization as scouting talent. Amateur players are never finished products when they first get drafted or signed.

speaking of 5' 8", McGonigle's load up is pretty similar (mirror image of course) to Altuve's. He doesn't pick up his front foot quite to the same extreme but overall the step is pretty similar, maybe even a bit longer.
