It feels like when the Tigers lose, the Pistons win and since the Pistons are in a Game 7, that is the better result for me.

I know there's injuries, but we can't dump some of these guys and at least TRY some other guys from Toledo?    I don't know that Malgeri or Julks or Max Anderson would be improvements, but we can't try and see?     Oh, but they'd have to cut guys from the 40-man.   Yeah?  So what?

So what moves are you making?  Who is being promoted, demoted, designated for assignment?

I’ve been keeping track of mileage and outings since 2021.  I’m ahead of all previous years.  This is the year I get over 1,000 miles in.

I don't know if the back will hold up but I'll challenge you to a friendly competition. The best I've done in the last 5 or years is 875, last year was only about 650. I'll warn you I'm going to count maybe 10 miles week commuter mileage on a volunteer gig I can ride to beside the time on the road bike. You apparently have a good leg up - as I noted I'm just starting out, for the season -I'm at about 22mi

I think I have 125 miles in so far.

I should have had 1K last year, but I lost time with a broken bike.  Actually, same the year before.  I’ve gotten over 800.  No excuse this year, at least now.  New bike, got some early miles in, like I said ahead of previous years.

In my hard core days, I did TOSRV a few times ( a long while ago now!) which was a double century on Mother's day weekend. Columbus to Portsmouth on Sat and back on Sunday, so I had to have at least 250+ by now, which was a real a challenge given how erratic Spring weather is.

One issue is that JV, Brieske and Melton are closing in on returns and have to be activated off the 60 day when that happens, so there’s already going to be three DFAs just from that.  I’d guess Vanasco, De Jesus and maybe even SGL.

Maybe Skubal moves to the 60 day but the timeline seems to be moving fast

That being said, I don’t know why Short is on the roster with McKinstry back.  They need to DFA him and add an OF to call up.  We need the defensive help there more than the infield.  There’s no reason for Lee, Short AND Workman to be up right now.

This is likely the last shot for Workman - if he doesn't produce he either needs to find a long term AAA gig or head for the real world. Same is probably true for Short, but the quality of his glove may allow him to stick at AAA as some team's emergency depth - which I guess is where he started the season.

The disconnect is we have pitchers close to coming back but the pitching fill-ins have preformed betterr than the position fill-ins have. We are in more dire need of bats than arms - though  it's probably an easy prediction that the level of pitching we are getting isn't sustainable for long without more of the regulars getting back soon.

Perez has been a big disappointment compared to last year. Looks like he gained weight to me. McKinstry's numbers much worse as well. The whole bench has been a black hole which no hits can escape from.

I never thought Wenceel Perez could be any more than a second division starter at best, and we are now in the second division. If we had all our position players intact, we’d likely be a first division team, and Wenceel wouldn’t be starting. So, yeah, that tracks.

In all seriousness, I don’t think Wenceel will ever be any better than he was last year, but he could definitely be better than he is now. It looks like he is selling out for more contact this year, since his walks and strikeouts are both down, which would help explain his power outage. His cratering defense, I have no idea about.

In the end, though, Wenceel is just another somewhat toolsy player this organization signed a whole bunch of in the five-to-ten-year-ago range. If you look back, he was never any better than 8th best prospect, and more like 20th best prospect in the system most of the time, which doesn’t typically augur an all-star player. We can’t let him go just yet because we don’t have anyone we know is reliably better in the system, and we can’t just pick up a better replacement on the shelf at Walmart, so we are left to trying to develop and get as much out of him as possible before we get someone better to replace him.

you never really know what a team is going to be. So far it looks like last season was the Cinderella at the ball season for the Tigers but midnight struck a little too soon for them. This year Fairy Godmother is apparently otherwise employed so it's back to tattered dresses and keeping the hearth warm for others ..... unless she should make another appearance.

Do you really think midnight has struck for this Cinderella organization? That’s pretty final.

I don’t think we were ever auditioning Gage Workman for a permanent gig on the team. He was always going to be Mr. Right Now for us, never Mr. Right. I think he will end up in Asia, maybe even Japan, and do pretty well there.

Zack Short is the guy who’s going to have to find a long-term high school coaching gig sometime in the next couple of years.

no - the metaphor is midnight struck for them last year in the playoffs - they turned back into pumpkins before the ball was over (didn't get to end of playoffs/World Series win).

OK, I was wondering whether you meant their window had closed and they need to overhaul again.

What’s annoying is that he was a shortstop in the low minors and now can’t even be a passable right fielder defensively.

I think mid-market teams need to re-tool continuously like the Indians and Brewers seem to do every year.  Please don't take that as a criticism of Harris.  It's just something that I anticipate the Tigers will have to be doing in the future.

We do seem to be stuck on running it back with the same group of failed/disappointing/runofthemill prospects for the last few years - Garcia, Jones, Jung, Tork, etc - shaking things up a bit wouldn't hurt.

Harris is relying on inertia for a lot of the roster issues. Things will eventually work out if you throw a bunch of guys at the problem. Cleveland and Milwaukee are much more ruthless and know they can't spend above a certain level. They identify which guys they won't pay and move them before the value declines.

yeah - I think the wish-cast on Perez was that he would be the Isaac Peredes that didn't get away, a late blooming bat that could stay on the field defensively in a utility role. Well - not so much, esp after he came down with the throwing yips as an infielder.

Moving Josh Naylor a classic Cleveland move for example.

Who is Garcia?  Pedro?

I’m guessing it’s easier to play shortstop in the low minors than it is to play right field in the majors.

yes, I think the idea that the minors are filled with elite defenders who can't hit well enough is a myth.  The difference between an average fielder in the minors and an average fielder in the majors is very large.  It's likely not as big as the hitting gap, but still very big.

I think maybe you can turn it around and get more likely statement - which would be that if you are an elite hitter the majors will find a place for you even if you are a poor fielder, but if you are an elite fielder that is a poor hitter, that is much less likely. Ergo, there are probably more elite fielders that can't hit hanging around the minors that teams are hoping will eventually hit, than there are elite hitters stuck there learning to field better. But the fact there are more of one than of the other doesn't mean there are a lot of them in absolute numbers.
