Dan Gilmore Posted July 8 Posted July 8 I think the sports media (broadly) is prone to reporting rumors and deals/players offers that are not close to firm…and that is both to have content to churn out and because people eat it up. IMO we seldom know all the deals that were actually proposed, or how serious things got, such as counter proposals. For trades of free agents. 3 Quote

I misunderstood you and thought you were saying a team must replace a pitcher with a pitcher and can't replace him with a position player. I now see you meant if we want to add a pitcher we must drop a pitcher. Quote

Graterol Posted July 9 Posted July 9 Obviously need to see where the team is at the deadline, but if we are within say 3 games, I wonder if there is a middle ground. Trade Skubal and get someone MLB ready (or flip a prospect or two for young MLB talent to a 3rd team). With Valdez, Flaherty, Mize, Melton, and Montero/Verlander/Jobe, rotation should still be fine this year. There are so many holes to fill where an upgrade could go a long way (especially CF/RF/ and 3B or SS). Scottie seems so risk averse that he just holds Skubal, but I don’t see how you can let him walk unless playoffs are a guarantee. Quote

I’ve been thinking the same thing: cash in for Skubal, get a few players that will help long term (and ideally this season too). But keep the rest of the staff. Quote
chasfh Posted July 9 Posted July 9 Oh please, god, don’t let Dingler be out for so long that we trade Skubal for Dalton Rushing. Quote

Who else besides Rushing is a position guy we could get who could step in and replace the wins we lose with Skubal? Someone who could step in right now and help us this year? Quote

We have the best record in the AL against teams over .500. Obviously, Dingler’s health is critical. Him going down for an extended time would really hurt. 2 Quote
CaliforniaDreaming Posted July 9 Posted July 9 It would suck to do the Skubal trade, make the playoffs, and then get dominated by Skubal. Quote
4hzglory Posted July 9 Posted July 9 Interesting Tidbit from The Athletic I didn't know. The Rays acquired Junior Caminero from the Guardians in 2021 for pitcher Tobias Myers. Thank goodness Cleveland missed on him. According to the article, he wasn't the Rays first choice either, so they almost missed on him too. 18yr olds who haven't played stateside are a long shot, but when they hit, they can definitely hit big. monkeytargets39 Posted July 9 Posted July 9 This is going to sound crazy, but I’m not convinced that current Skubal is more valuable to a potential playoff rotation for us than current Melton/Mize/Montero. Skubal is not economic with his pitch count and even if he is lights out, we are probably going to still have to cover 4 innings with the bullpen in his starts. When Skubal pitches to contact, he’s been getting hit and hit for power. He’s been giving up homeruns to a lot of weak hitters this year too. I’ve lately been feeling that we should trade Skubal regardless because if we do keep staying on a roll, I think we can win with a Melton/Mize/Montero/Valdez rotation especially if a Skubal trade can upgrade the offense by getting us another outfielder. Last two playoffs was us struggling to score runs, not us struggling to prevent them. Quote

I'm assuming Melton is the 4th for the playoffs. So Flaherty, Montero, and Jobe would move to the pen removing a few of the weaker links in the pen. Edited July 9 by 4hzglory Quote

While I agree to an extent, keeping Skubal is not only keeping a dominant starter, come playoff time it's adding a potentially top flight reliever as we only need 4 starters. To me, if the playoff odds continue to improve, that outweighs what we are likely to get. And in the playoffs, basically every team struggles to score runs. We scored more than the Mariners in our series. Pitching is so much better because of the off days. Edited July 9 by 4hzglory Quote
diaspora04 Posted July 9 Posted July 9 The use of both first and last player names is confounding me. Is there a hidden meaning when a poster uses a player's first name rather than his last name? 1 Quote
