We are getting to the point where he is going to just need to be looked at as a bench/pinch hitter in the future unless he can majorly turn around his durability and consistency. and before anyone says Javy—we desperately need him taking all of McKinstrys reps moreso than playing OF every day. The Braves get a back-end starter to eat innings, for good or for bad. They're desperate for any kind of starting pitching. They add on a bad Valdez contract but lose the bad Strider contract... he who is constantly on the IL for them. We get cap savings... and convert Strider to closer. maybe he can stay healthy as a reliever instead of as a starter? Maybe he can Andrew Miller...? You know... thinking outside the box. Taking a "calculated risk". IMO... it's worth the risk. Thoughts anyone? PS: OR... Flaherty. They add a back-end starter with no future commitment. Lose the Strider contract... but we would need them to pay this year's balance of salary due Strider. Just a thought... Edited July 27 by 1984Echoes 1 Quote

1984Echoes Posted July 27 Posted July 27 Some other thoughts on Skubal and the trade deadline from the game thread: 1 hour ago, 1984Echoes said: I think the one KEY event that would trigger the Dodgers is... The Brewers deciding to chase Skubal to pair up with Miz. The biggest potential "Dodgers-Killers" in 2026? Pairing up Misiorowski-Skubal as a 1-2 punch. And they have the farm system to match, or nearly match, what the Yankees could offer. They've done this before with CC Sabathia. Would they do it again? With Skubal? The Dodgers are HELL-BENT on trying to win three straight Championships this year. The ONE thought that would scare the beJEEBers out of them? Facing the Brewers and a 1-2 Skubal-Miz punch. THAT would drive them to go after Skubal and outbid everyone else. They want a guarantee, or as close to one as they can get. IMO. To be honest, I believe that is the ONE, and... possibly... the ONLY scenario that would get Harris the return package that he wants. The Brewers and the Dodgers fighting over Skubal. Every other team/ scenario, my guess is they would drop out of the picture early. Methinks. Therefore... I want the Brewers and the Dodgers fighting over Skubal. Quote

monkeytargets39 Posted July 27 Posted July 27 I’d be shocked if we moved Valdez, and even more surprised if we got anything for Jack Flaherty besides low minors lottery picks or a reclamation project. Anyone coming to us for a trade is going to either be looking for Skubal, Mize or Gleyber. If we are trying to contend and WE don’t even really want Flaherty/Jansen/etc., why would anyone else want them—let alone give up anything valuable for them? Quote

Look at the pitchers we traded for last year. If we are willing to eat some of the salary Flaherty would absolutely be interesting to a contender for a low minors lottery ticket or something that could be a further along bullpen type arm that might not have room on their 40 man next year. Valdez probably less so because of the future commitments. Bullpen arms like Finnegan, Holton and Jensen could have interest in them as well. With that said I don’t really see us becoming full sellers. I see one or two moves if we get great offers or minor to get under the tax and still try to win. Quote
Tenacious D Posted July 27 Posted July 27 Flaherty probably needs to prove he’s healthy and productive prior to the deadline. Quote

I can see those moves if we eat salary—but a big reason to try and move any of them is to get under the CB tax. Again, I’d be definitely open to trying to do that, I’m just not sure if we get much in return. Maybe Harris and Fetter can find a diamond in the rough pitcher they like in someone’s system similar to how we acquired Olson. Quote

For sure. I just think any team that would have interest in acquiring those guys would probably want to move on from their own bad contract as well. I don’t think the Dodgers/Yankees/Brewers/etc are looking at acquiring a Flaherty as a move that helps them even if it’s free. Quote

I don't think it matters if we get much back if we are trying to get under the CB tax. We just need to have one trade, that gets us there. And, even if little in return except a low-level lottery ticket... we would still get: A CB draft pick, versus NOT if we are over the tax line. I believe this is an after-the-end of the 1rst round pick? Pretty valuable. It also guarantees that we get after-the-1st round picks for Skubal and most likely Mize, instead of after-the-4th round picks. Pretty valuable. We just need one salary dump trade, with one player that gets us below CB tax-line, even if a little-to-no return, to guarantee these higher picks. IMO, that's a good trade, in and of itself. 1 Quote
monkeytargets39 Posted July 27 Posted July 27 Right, I just assume that we are talking a scenario where we are keeping Skubal/Mize/Gleyber because if any of them are dealt we are easily under. Quote
Edman85 Posted July 27 Posted July 27 Here to point out I had it wrong, scrubbed the CBA over the weekend and per the current rules, being a tax payer does not preclude you from competitive balance draft picks. Quote

Well, that is encouraging at least. Still a significant difference between 2 extra 1st round picks and 2 extra 4th round picks for Skubal/Mize. However, if the past 2 days didn't do it, If they don't sweep the next series, I'd be surprised if they don't trade Skubal. I think they still have a reasonable shot at getting to the playoffs without him, but the odds are still low enough it likely doesn't make sense to keep him. The fact that they didn't far any farther behind after those 2 losses complicates things, but it sure would have been better to be 1.5-2.5 back instead of 3.5 back. Quote
NorthWoods Posted July 27 Posted July 27 The Athletic has the Brewers obtaining Skubal. Another article there mentions that if the Braves get into the Skubal market then Hartman and Caminiti would need to be in the mix. Quote

Yes, 1.5 back obviously would be better, but even 3.5 back, still in July, isn't insurmountable. Trading Skubal/Mize for players who can help our lineup right now would make us both sellers and buyers. This trade deadline could possibly make or break the Scott Harris years. Trading established players for "prospects" who are still 1 to 3 years away really won't cut it. I'm not sure the fan base would accept it. I know this fan wouldn't. Quote

If the deadline was tomorrow, I would trade Skubal and keep Mize/Torres/Flaherty. Ideally get 1 player that can help now and then the highest combo of upside/floor for the other prospects. I still think we'd have enough to get hot and have a chance, but would be going with the odds. However, since the deadline isn't until next week, if we sweep Baltimore and gain any ground on the wildcard/division, I'd make the trades necessary to get under the tax and keep Skubal/MIze/Torres. Sports_Freak Posted July 27 Posted July 27 I was watching the Yankee Philly game last night and they said Philly was desperate for some RH bats. Ship Tork and Torres out. Dombrowski is never shy about having an empty farm system. 😆😆 Quote

Hell Curtis Mead got Conner Early who in January was ranked the 56th prospect.....(given yes, he has years of control and what not I get it but the value's going to be outrageous this deadline is my point). Who ranked those three Cubs players as top 50 prospects? Quote
