If we make any significant trades with any of the following teams, this is who I specifically would be satisfied getting in return:

Dodgers:  Mike Sirota.  .472 obp this year across two levels (with decent sample sizes at both levels.).  Walks nearly as much as he strikes out.  Has less power than some of the other Dodgers outfield prospects but does have 14 HRs this year and is OPSing over 1.000 both this year and for his career.  He’s 23 and right handed.  Would be a great addition to the top of the order with Clark and McGonigle as a high OBP guy who makes opposing pitchers work.  Especially if we don’t re-sign Torres.  Solid speed and defense can play at multiple OF spots, but he’d look great every day in RF.

Brewers:  Josh Adamczewski.  Corner outfielder.  .432 obp over three years in the minors.  Another guy who walks nearly at the same rate as he strikes out.  Not a ton of power but has 20 doubles and 13 HRs in 78 games at AA.  Doesn’t have a grade out real great defensively, but should be serviceable.  Another guy in the Clark/McGonigle mold who gets on base and doesn’t chase much.  If you can’t tell, that’s the kind of bat I want us to get moreso than power.  Greene/Tork/Dingler/Carpenter have plenty of power—we need to get guys who can be on base menaces in front of them and wear down the opposing pitchers.

Likewise with the Brewers, their 1B/3B guy Andrew Fischer has top level power and gets on base .400+.  He strikes out a ton, so wouldn’t be my first choice—but the power bat plays if we eventually give up on Keith or Tork

Phillies:  Francisco Renteria.  Not ideal since he’s just in rookie ball, so at least a couple years away—but he grades at 50 or over in all areas and is one of the top international prospect signings.  None of the rest of the Phillies prospects do much for me even though they seem to think they have enough to land Skubal.

Mariners:  Michael Arroyo.  2B/OF who hits right handed.  Walks at around a 14% rate.  Strikeouts at about 23%, so reasonable ratio for a RH guy with good gap power.  Pretty consistently a .400 obp guy in the minors.  Is in AAA Tulsa now.  Has some speed and the 2B/OF flexibility could be useful given our roster build.

Tampa:  Theo Gillen.  Their top prospect. Outfielder at AA with 60 grade hit tool and 60 grade speed tool.  36 steals already this year plus last year.  .291/.426/.471/.897 career minor league slash line.  K rate is slightly high but his BB rate is good to offset it.

Caden Bodine is another guy I’d want.  Switch hitting catcher at AA who is good defensively and played college ball.  Walks more than he strikes out and has only Kd 29 times in 92 games (367 ABs).  Modest power but absolutely a guy who could play a lot and fully split catching duties with Dingler so we can DH him more without having to play an offensive black hole.  I’m not high on Liranzo and Briceno needs to be looked at as a 1B, so C is a bit of a depth need for us.  Valencia is poor defensively and Oliveto is a long way away from being a likely option.  This would be a good get IMO.  The switch hitting option should appeal highly to Harris/Hinch. Plus Tampa has an even higher rated catcher prospect so he is “expendable” in that sense.

If we make a move I want a close to ready RF/1B type who has advanced BB rates, high OBP and low-ish K rates.  Preferably RH or SH since we are so lefty heavy.  Power is a bonus but not what I want us to focus on.  Pitching help would also be nice but it’s a bit harder to project and there’s the high injury risks.  I trust Harris, Fetter and company on scouting and finding pitching gems than I do on finding positional players, hence why I want the focus to be on acquiring offensive help.   No need to trade someone like Skubal or Mize for a package built around pitching unless we are getting an absolute elite prospect.

I want the top of our order for the next 8 years to be three guys who are just a complete pain in the butt to get out and who drive that pitch count up.  Then hit them with Dingler/Greene/Tork/Carp/Keith/Lee who are all very dangerous but who have more swing and miss.  Eliminate the bottom of the order black hole problem and make each trip through the lineup a chore.  Reduce the quick innings for the opposing pitcher and allow our starters to get more rest between innings.  Melton/Montero and hopefully Jobe are so good at getting quick innings that we need to use that to our advantage as much as possible.

Dump the fat off the roster of Vierling/Perez/McKinstry/Cruz/etc. and build a bench around guys who actually do something at a high level instead of guys you can just plug and play anywhere who aren’t actually good at anything.

I enjoyed your post but can't say I know too much about the players you mentioned apart from Sirota and Guillen. The closer we get to the deadline I am beginning to think our record has less effect on trading Skubal as the return does. If the deal offered is very very good I think Harris makes the deal. I think he might just look at the trade in a vacuum .

If I were a GM, I'd be making moves now. Why wait another week? Doesn't make a lot of sense. If you're gonna go for it, grab your juevos an go for it. If your not, sell an beat the market.

It takes two to want to make moves after agreeing on the terms that satisfies both parties. If you have ever negotiated a high-value exchange, then you know how long it takes to accomplish that.

Depends if you’re buying or selling.  If I was buying I’d go now.  If I was selling I’d let the panic settle in before making a move to maximize the deal.

Pursuant to my post directly above, since in your scenario buyers want to buy now, and on the other side of the same transaction sellers want to let the panic settle in before making a move to maximize the deal, that's why no trades are happening now.

Well...

There are 10 or so teams that don't know what direction they are going to go, so those teams (Tigers included) should not do that.

You're replying to Randolph Duke.

Bringing Matt Shaw to Detroit would set hair aflame in the political forum. 😉

But seriously, folks: I don't think this should get it done because we need outfielders, not infielders. I would think Hartshorn would have to be part of the deal.

I have no idea why, nor do I care.   People insisting on inserting politics into every aspect of life is a poison.

If he improves the Detroit Tigers then I'll root for him whether he's wearing a Barack Obama or a Ronald Reagan Tee shirt.

I would do Alcantara, Shaw and Wiggins for Skubal. That'd be 3 top 50 prospects for a few months of Skubal. No brainer.

I still think the Dodgers will send us two of their OF prospects. But meh. We'll see.

Watching some of Dodgers/Mets on Fox tonight. Davis and Smoltz were just opining that the Tigers might not be looking to trade Skubal because the AL seems wide open and, to quote Davis, “Why not the Tigers?”

Classic national-media jinx?

No jinx. Clev and CWS also lost today. This is going to happen

Great review of possible returns for Skubal. It gets me to accept a possible trade. If he really wants to play in Detroit, we could always sign him this winter. 😆

3 top 50 prospects according to who?

Setting aside the idea of torching our roster as sellers, which I don’t think we’re going to do …

We who believe the Tigers will be buyers like to talk hypothetically about how Harris must acquire an outfielder to shore up our terrible (as of the morning of July 26) offense, or else resign in disgrace. But in reality, there are practically no clean targets that are the perfect fit for us, someone who will deliver plus-level offense with average defense at worst. There are almost no guys fitting that description on the store shelves.

The A’s are probably the team that matches up best with us, but with Soderstrom and Butler practically untouchable, that leaves guys like Cortes (who’s basically Carpenter lite), Bolte (a CF who’s not hitting), and Colby Thomas (who’s neither hitting nor defending so far this year.)

Beyond that, other possibilities include Spencer Steer of the Reds (average hitter, can play RF but more of a 1B), Tyrone Taylor of the Mets (meh), and Lane Thomas of the Royals (want to trade a top prospects within the division?). Who else is there? Who is selling All-Star right fielders in exchange for next-tier prospects?

Probably the biggest swing we could take is Luis Robert Jr of the Mets, a supremely talented athlete who just now came off the 60-day list, and who is 2-for-15 with six strikeouts since coming back, and who knows whetehr he can ever stay on the field for the rest of the year? But man, if he can, he could rock.

Maybe you could make a case for Mickey Moniak of the Rockies, and he might be the one guy who could help us at the plate. But he is also a CF who is controllable through next year as well. So if you think Max Clark can benefit from one more year in Toledo in 2027, then yeah, maybe go for Moniak. But we’ll have competition: the Astros are linked to him as well, so Moniak will probably cost something that will leave a mark when they go.

As for the Dodgers, who some are convinced have prospect outfielders who can be All-Stars for us immediately, why would they take a prospects in return for them? An if it takes Skubal to get them, that’s us giving up on this year, so who cares if the return helps us now?

I don’t see any magic bullets in these options, so I guess what we are left with is someone in this forum is going to have to cast on magic spell on the other GMs to get them to cough up controllable right fielders on a Hall of Fame trajectory in exchange for the bag of balls we’re willing to give up. Otherwise, we’ll have to take our chances on one of the options above, cross our fingers hoping for a good outcome, and perhaps be understanding of the circumstances if the outcome is not so good.

I love the story of Mickey Moniak turning his career around from 1-1 bust to solid MLB player but his splits are heavily weighted to Coors Field.

What exactly are we going to be giving up to buy and get late inning relief help and an established outfielder?

More than likely more than I’d want to see us give up.  We would be giving up prospects to get this and then also running the risk of losing Skubal/Mize/etc in the offseason.  Seems like outright buying would be the worst of both worlds in my opinion.

The outfield upgrade is already under contract waiting for Aug 14.

Yes, he is just as likely to help them this year as any of the other top 50 guys people are saying they might get.

I think the Tigers will get a top 20 prospect, top 75 prospect and another top 100 prospect / player newly in the majors if they trade Skubal. I think you'll be surprised what the prices will be in the next few days......  Hell Curtis Mead got Conner Early who in January was ranked the 56th prospect.....(given yes, he has years of control and what not I get it but the value's going to be outrageous this deadline is my point).

Skubal is not a rental for the Dodgers.  It’s not a big deal for them to sign him long term to the contract that Boras wants.  They are probably the only team that has that control.
