You can have all of those guys.

Give me Mike Henneman

His chin was classic.  And he had an underrated career as a Tigers reliever.  I have him ranked #2 behind Hiller.

Considering how bad the teams he was on were, he had a decent career. Also one of my favorites.

Tigers have 109 games played, so 53 left.  They are 7 behind Chicago in the loss column, 4 behind Cleveland, and 3 behind Minnesota.  That's a lot to make up in only 53 games, especially when the have question marks in the rotation along with a sad bullpen.

They have to be better than Chicago, on average, one game every 7 they play.  If Chicago plays .500, the Tigers will need to play. 640.  That's tough.

They are only 4.5 back in the wildcard but there are also 4 teams ahead of them that they will need to pass too.

I was all for going for it but games like yesterday where they are leading 7-0 and end up losing really makes a person reevaluate things

I know this could change soon....but which of Skubal/Melton/Montero is in the unreliable category?  Aside from some intermittent injury issues Mize has been pretty reliable too, his worst month was a 3.63 ERA.  Same with Flaherty 2.50 ERA in June, 2.87 in July.  Overall starting pitching has been the least of their worries.

Need to sell this year. Team is set up nice for a future run and can bounce back quickly.  Cant afford to lose Mize and Skubal for peanuts.

Have to take advantage of this window even if it ticks off some people. It's the best way forward.

Montero is a question mark.  8 runs in his last 16 innings.

if he wasn't a question marks he wouldn't get shifted back to the bullpen and the rotation for the last 3 or 4 years.

I don’t see question marks in the rotation.  Skubal, Mize and Melton might be one of the strongest top 3 in baseball.  This is actually a pretty good team, with the exception of a really bad bullpen. And if we trade Skubal and/or Mize intelligently, we should be in a good position for the next few years.

Henneman was how a young monkeytargets added the phrase “Butt chin” to his vernacular

I think both of them have to rank behind Willie and Todd.

I think Hiller was one of the all-time great relievers in the game.  I don't believe any Tiger comes close to him.  Hernandez had the dominant year in 1984, but not enough years.  Jones got good results but I am not too impressed with modern guys that come in with 3-run leads and nobody on base, give up 3 base runners and a run and get a save.  He was never dominant.  He pitched in the right place at the right time though.  My top 5:

Hiller

Henneman

Hernandez

Lopez

Jones

Baseball America throwing cold water on things.

If Tarik Skubal gets traded, the Tigers’ realistic hope won’t be to win the trade—it’ll be to survive it.

For teams trading one of the best pitchers in baseball on an expiring deal, the prospect return rarely comes close to matching what they gave up. That also means the acquiring club will likely have few regrets going forward.

Looking at comparable trades this century, history shows that it’s almost impossible for a team to win a trade when shipping out an ace on an expiring contract. At best, they can avoid losing it too badly.

While I get this and it’s why I was against trading Skubal before the season (and up through last week) “losing it too badly” is a bit of an overstatement when the value of the ace on the expiring deal to all of the teams trading said ace was basically 0 for the rest of the season.  Any future value over what they would have received in draft pick compensation was more than the value of that ace for the rest of the season on a losing team.

We probably have the greatest playoff odds of any of those historical teams, but even so, the future value of a ML starter with multiple years of control and ideally ready or almost ready OF is likely more valuable to us at this point than the value of Skubal finishing the season on our team.  We got much more value from Boyd and Norris (including Olsen) than we would have from 2 months of Price in a losing season.

I won't argue Hiller for long mostly because of the multiple innings difference.   But I would still take Willie over Henneman.

Willie 6yrs 358games 120Saves 483IP ERA+135 ERA3.52

Henneman 9yrs 491games 154saves 669IP  ERA+136  ERA3.40

Hiller 15yrs 545games 125saves 1242IP ERA+134  ERA3.39

Kind of amazing how similar the ERA+/ERAs are between the 3

I'd guess the Hiller difference in number of appearances per year is directly relatable to complete games.

Hard to classify Brantley or Segura as "losing"......it's a roll of the dice but that's better than a lower odds roll of the draft pick.

Lets hope he’s not a crushing bore about Burke and Adam Smith.
