CMRivdogs Posted Saturday at 02:47 PM Posted Saturday at 02:47 PM Rather than create a new topic (or do a search if this has been done before) Covers that are better than the original. Aretha Franklin Respect (over Otis Redding) Johnny Cash "Hurt" Joe Cocker With a Little Help From My Friends Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower Linda Ronstadt Willin' Marvin Gaye I Heard it Thru the Grapevine. (Keep in mind I'm a child of the late 60 and 70s...) Have at it 1 Quote

I think MTV might have altered their legacy in terms of production. At least for someone my age. A friend and I talk about how being of a certain age can cut you off unless you purposefully seek it out. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted Saturday at 04:53 PM Posted Saturday at 04:53 PM Always loved Alan Jackson's cover of Summertime Blues better than the original. Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago Steve Earle does a great cover of Willin'. As great as Linda's voice is, she just doesn't sound like a road-weary trucker. Steve Earle sounded like one was he was 4 years old. Great cover that's not better than the original, but still great. "Burning Down The House" by Tom Jones & The Cardigans. I'm not joking - listen to it. It's a hoot. If you are going to cheese it up and go over the top - a David Byrne song works for that. 1 Quote

I was never a big Hendrix fan, but I've heard musicians from the era say that none of Hendrix's recordings captured how good he was. I certainly never saw him live and IDK how much store you put in those kinds of 40yr old recollections - there's always a tendency for the old rockers to re-invent history a little bit. SRV was for sure the absolute master of the style he chose to play, but the thing about guitar is there are so many different styles and methods it's really a whole range of different instruments. I mean, e.g: how meaningful is it to compare Mark Knofler's playing to SRV's? (or to be really extreme, Pat Metheny's?) They aren't trying to do anything like the same thing. Linda Ronstadt II - Blue Bayou -1977 (orig Roy Orbison 1961). Orbison's original recording is a great classic, but Ronstadt just took it to another level. Edited 1 hour ago by gehringer_2 Quote
