2022-23 Detroit Tigers Offseason Thread

It really should go without saying that everyone who is a Tigers fan hates the situation they are in and wants to be out of it.

But for whatever reason, not flying off the handle every time a free agent is signed by a team not named the Detroit Tigers gets perceived as not caring. The reality is that people can want the situation to end while disagreeing with the best way for it to end.

Okay. lets hope that in 2022 we had the worst hitting coaches that ever lived, but our manager backed them all the way, and that is disturbing.       So maybe they found great hitting coaches who can return guys to career average, but we still really don't have much of a hitting roster and I know the pitching will be dicey while we wait for everyone to recover from injuries (literally everyone at one point), but they need to inject something more than hoping guys bounce back.   Avila left them in a bind, for sure, because the only tradeable prospects are pitchers and with our MASH-unit rotation we need every single pitching prospect.   I don't think it's out of the question to expect that Flores, Kirby, Bergner and Madden all end up getting multiple starts this year.      We need a couple bats, just be be a 70-win team next year.

yes exactly we are hoping that all these bats rebound to where they were in 2021 ignoring that they just might have played above thier heads in 2021 maybe because pitching was worst because of the weird covid season

Who replaces Castro.    Andy Ibanez?   Wow.  exciting.     Oh, the recongizing the strike zone thing.... Harold Castro had a better OBP than Ibanez.

Just in regards to this, there is still a chance Harold Castro ends up replacing Harold Castro.  I hope not, but he isn't signed yet.  Same with Willie.

Cohen seems to be the advocate the players association needed.

FYI, Cohen's purchase was only approved 25-4 (needed 22)

According to SNY's Andy Martino, those four owners who opposed Cohen's ownership were Jerry Reinsdorf of the Chicago White Sox (who had been previously publicized as being against Cohen's ownership); Arte Moreno of the Los Angeles Angels; Bob Castellini of the Cincinnati Reds; and Ken Kendrick of the Arizona Diamondbacks

so why watch a team you have no hope in this season?

Baseball is my sport and the Tigers are my team. And I'm not quitting them and jumping on someone else's bandwagon.

Beside that, I am interested in longer term progression of this team and it's young players. And I am interested to see what impact the new PBO has on the team going forward.

I understand the angst that everyone has about where they are at and frankly share it. But the new PBO deserves more than three months before throwing him to the wolves.

I watched almost every game last year.

I dont know if they will be better or worse next year. Probably better if I had to guess, because (a) the offseason isn't over yet and (b) I expect some mix of improvement from younger players and underperforming players to progress closer to their career means.

Ive stopped going to games for the last 5 years .... pretty much watch the games because i love sports and there isnt anything on during the summer

If you are not going to game, just watching on TV and are so upset you aren't willing to give the new FO even the who offseason before writing them off for not picking up free agents they weren't after anyway, why don't you root for the Mets or another team that is doing what you want?

I totally get the frustration of the past seasons, but we never realistically were going to sign the vast majority of the players who are off the market, nor should we have.  There are many ways to build the team and we are roughly 1 month into the offseason.  I doubt many of the players Harris has targeted are now unavailable.   And saying Illitch doesn't care is absurd also IMO as last offseason he was more than willing to spend when it looked like a SS, a starter, and a LF could take the team from 77 wins to playoff contention.

They did throw a few - Boyd, Lorenzen, and Malloy, plus like Edman said, all of the behind the scenes coaching staff, development, scouting, and training.  But I know, those aren't enough because they didn't offer arbitration to Candelario, the Castros, and Reyes.

It seems when a team can't produce home grown talent and has issues keeping players healthy and botching rehabs and the first thing the new guy does is overhaul the amateur scouting department and training staff, it's hard to say nothing has been done.

we've also been told for years that they were adding more and more analytic staff and making more modern changes to other area

I dont know if it's a lost season or not.... they play in the worst division in the sport after all, so may be there is a tail risk they can win it if a lot of things go right.

The point I'm continually trying to make here is that if it doesn't end up a lost season and they start to progress toward or even past .500, it's largely gonna be because of improvements on the roster as it already exists. It wouldn't because of individual free agent signings, and certainly not someone on the level of Brandon Drury
