a lot of the "founding fathers" opposed slavery. however, if they wanted to form a unified country made up of all the states (which they would need to defeat the british) they would need to compromise. so they did. adams did. hamilton did. lafayette didnt because he was french and was more worried about not getting his head chopped off at that time. if you criticize them for that compromise, then you need to realize that the country does not form in the way it did. now, you may say "good, anything is better than a nation that sanctioned slavery", which is a perfectly acceptable opinion to hold. but its with 20/20 hindsight. at the time, the goal was to create a nation. and that nation doesnt get created without a compromise on slavery.2 points

lbj's failing is vietnam. that's why he is lowered on the scale. the civil rights stuff is why he is ranked as high as he is. he was a very successful president in passing meaningful legislation. but vietnam was a really big deal. and a really huge failing. without it, lbj is probably top 7, maybe higher.2 points

LBJ did the right thing on Civil Rights and enacted the Great Society to tackle poverty. If he had the courage to end Vietnam he'd easily be my #1, but alas he extended and escalated the war and then lied about the "progress" we were making with McNamara.2 points

I don't doubt there are a lot of moral cowards who would jump at this market friendly way of approaching things. It would have been "smart" to let dictators run things because they always have such a clear perspective on what should be done to get the railroads to run on time. People be damned.1 point

howard overreacted and there is a good case that he should be fired, but he's not bobby knight in terms of behavior. mgoblog writes up the "he's a black guy who was grabbed by a white guy" excuse, which i dont buy for a minute. but wiscy folks got in his face and he reacted like a juvenile and not like a leader of men. howard appears to be unable to control his emotions. i would understand if they fired him, and i understand why they didnt. but he embarassed the university. again. he gets another chance because he is a favorite son, successful, and well liked and respected in basketball circles. no more chances for howard after this.1 point

LBJ's Civil Rights Act began the exodus of Dixiecrats to the GOP, sewing the seeds of what the party has become. McGovern's nomination in '72 pretty much sealed the deal.1 point

anyone else still watching The Walking Dead? We are almost caught up and I don't know what happened behind the scenes but this season is as good as anything we've seen with the show.1 point

That would actually be a plus since it would offer "walk to tacos" option that is just below the current must haves.1 point

Obama didn't support slavery, so that's always a good start to be higher than a President who did support slavery, like Polk and Jackson.1 point

I hear yah, I definitely don't have the patience for it. I tried to do recording for quite a while a number of years ago and it was never a source of satisfaction, it was just another source of dissatisfaction b/c I never got it sounding as good as I wished. I think my buddy in another on/off band I'm in has that Tascam 2488. He pulls some really great recordings in his room with it, he doesn't have super hot mics or crazy mic pre's or anything like that. Last week he started an apprenticeship with an engineer in Detroit. Looking forward to seeing how good he gets, he's looking to career switch to this. I think it would be a difficult way to earn a living.1 point

Studio has evolved in such crazy ways - do you do much editing Biff? One thing that still completely blows my mind is how they'll have me do say 5 takes of a solo. Then, with what seems like a quick mouse drag but is defiitely more than that, the producer can create one super-solo from the best parts of those 5 takes. And you totally cannot tell that it happened. Never really have to rip a perfect take. It's really something.1 point

that's awesome dude. I'm not a bassist either but what I always hear from them is you gotta do better than just playing the guitar on the bass so if you did that you're golden as a bassist man! haha! Now you just gotta learn to play both guitar and bass at the same time1 point

Back into the recording studio on Saturday..... one of my favorite things to do associated with playing guitar!!!1 point

If we are going to re-adjudicate every national boundary since Lenin the world is in even bigger trouble. If Putin really wants to go that route maybe Japan should reclaim all its one time Asian holdings.1 point

That ship has sailed,Lee. The short answer to your question is “never”. Even if they ‘figure it out’, they’ll be no admitting it because to do so would only compound their shame.1 point

The reactions from the right about how Trump would handle this are something else... The guy literally blackmailed Ukraine with weapons they need for defense. That tells me everything I need to know about how Trump would handle this.1 point
