  3. One thing which is not commonplace is for an industry to have an anti-trust exemption allowing it to behave like a monopoly.

  4. Lets see if she gets kicked out of the party for that? She can be a Republican but Liz Cheney can’t? Make them own that shit.

  5. Well, one thing seems clear: the Ukrainian citizenry apparently didn't watch that John Mearsheimer lecture.

  6. There is no differentiating between the two, just misuse of the term, which I admit, is becoming common. But, claiming a lockout, or a franchisor setting up rules to benefit it's franchisees, two common practices in a capitalist economy, is socialism, is just bizarre. I understand you support the players, but there are many very good reasons to support them without this cockamamie "socialist" bullshit. If there is private ownership and autonomy regarding the production, distribution and sales of the product, that is capitalism.

  8. https://youtu.be/fPcoFK8jem8 I wish there was a video of my friends faces as I walked out of dinner that night. I was a nervous wreck, stood up from dinner, left, walked to a random NYC bar, ordered a drink, saw the Maggs homer, chugged my drink, and went back to dinner without saying a word.

  9. The Republicans Russia plan will be unveiled in two weeks. This is harder than anyone thought plus they need to wait until they are done being audited.

  10. I listened to The Bulwark podcast yesterday and, instinctually, I agreed with Tom Nichols when he said that, while Zelensky had done a good job with the cards he was dealt, it also spoke to his inexperience in government. His inexperience may be an asset here tho... the politician move may be to flee, but he stays anyway

  11. Putin threatened Finland and Sweden if they even talk about joining NATO. They need to join up with NATO, like, overnight. A secret negotiation and immediate entry, and NATO needs to let 'em in. Then they can say F.U. Putin.

  12. Finally decided to engage Ukrainian neighbors in conversation. Talked to the woman and she speaks very good English. Moved to the US at a very young age. Husband was born and raised in Ukraine and moved to the US about 10 years ago. Most of her family is evacuating to Poland. She has not received confirmation yet they made it to Poland. A few of the men enlisted in the military. I didn't go down that rabbit hole but her tone made it seem like their fates are sealed. I lack social skills and in particular empathy so I didn't press on.

  14. My favorite Comerica Park story...I was there with my young daughter probably back in the mid-2000s. The team was bad enough that the stadium was pretty empty. We walked behind the CF camera well and noticed the door was open a crack and no one was broadcasting that day. So, we stepped in and watched an inning and a half from the CF camera well. It was amazing how clearly you could see the pitches moving even from that distance. After an inning and a half some usher opened the door and asked what we were doing out there. I replied "Just leaving" as we hurried past and disappeared. 🙂

  15. and all this talk of european soccer, im not sure any of you would really like that system here. everyone loves the idea of relegation and teams actually losing something when they lose, but european soccer is VERY top heavy. the same handful of teams win every year. and the only way to break into that club is to be bought by a multi-billionaire who just throws money at the team and buys the best managers and players. is that really what you want? people complain about the yankees but the yankees havent won anything in years. real madrid and barcelona and occasionally atletico win EVERY YEAR. everyone else is playing for third most seasons (covid upset that a bit, but madrid are still winning the league). that's what you get in a more free market system where there is no cap on salaries and players can go where they want. the tigers would simply become a feeder club for the yankees, red sox, and dodgers. unless jeff bezos or elon musk was a secret tigers' fan and wanted to buy them.

  16. and this is exactly where the baseball owners are stuck in some kind of feudalist fantasy. You aren't Lord of some manor above being examined. Open the books, make a deal on the total revenue split, and have long term peace to work on improving the marketing of the game for the profit of all. But as long as the owners continue to carry on like mafia dons afraid to be audited, the players will never, ever trust them.

  17. I believe 154 was a more or less magic number at the time because the leagues were trying to play a balanced schedule. You had 8 team leagues, so you played each of 7 other teams 22 times. When expansion began, there were a couple of years where the two leagues had a different number of teams, but by 1962 they had 10 each so they when to 162 with a balanced schedule were you played each team 18 times. Subsequent expansions and divisional org have laid waste to any possibility of everyone playing everyone else the same number of times other than within divisions, so today the choice for the length of the season is completely arbitrary other than to quantitative junkies concerned about seasonal counting stats. This history does point out one fact that we lose sight of comparing eras. When you faced a team 22 times in a season, you got to know all the pitchers really well. This had to be a huge advantage for hitters that is lost today and no doubt another influence in the rise of the all or nothing hitting approach.
