  1. One other thing that's not really being considered here...and it is relevant to this specific player/discussion. Higher end minor league free agents are often pretty particular about where they sign....sometimes it centers on money, others it's on potential for big league opportunity, and still others it is the trajectory or position of the org. In many cases, quality minor league free agents like Thompson will sign a deal with an opt out to see if they get their shot somewhere (like Detroit) but then have the option of looking for another opportunity. It is not just possible, but reality, to factor in Thompson not wanting to be called up by the Tigers. These things happen all the time. He simply wanted his opt out to come and be able to look for another opportunity....the Tigers were receptive (as they should be) and decided to honor his request, but instead of just letting that date pass, worked with him to find a destination where they could get "something" instead of nothing. While the player has minimal, if any, leverage in these situations, it is customary for the teams to play nice in situations like this, particularly when they clearly aren't going anywhere and the player has no real bearing on their future.

  4. I've been tempted to write off Intel a couple of times in the past when it looked like their management had gone stale and their tech fallen behind, but they are such a deep organization they seem to be able to flip the switch when they need to.

  5. It is the Fed's job to screw things up. We wouldn't be in the position we are in if it wasn't for the Fed to begin win. The market has crashed twice since I've been investing because of bubbles - and they still don't know what one looks like. But they are only part of our financial system that is a sick joke.

  6. The risk that I see is mostly with the Fed. They have a playbook they are working from that says you *have* to have an increase in unemployment that reaches some kind of pain level to bring prices under control. And that has been true enough in previous bouts of inflation, but while I generally have little sympathy for people who look at some economic situation and say 'this is different' when it really isn't, this is different - or at least different enough for any previous bout of inflation since the Federal Reserve system has developed the playbook they are currently reading from. The fact is that prior to the pandemic, the economy constantly under-inflated the Fed's targets, and as all the short term dislocations of the pandemic work their way through, that is the status quo the economy is going to tend back to by itself, which is not the situation of 1958 or 1980 or 1990 or 2001 or 2008 experiences that the Fed draws it playbook from. So the risk I see is that Fed is going to overshoot. The one confounding factor that makes things even more complicated is that the boomer retirement wave does have an effect driving up labor costs. But politically, progressives should be pushing the Fed to allow enough inflation to let working class wage rates go up, because that is the way you want to increase social equity in a market economy - give the market scope to reapportion a bigger share of total corporate income to workers.

  8. I understand everything about the logic presented here except why a call up would stil wouldn't be in his interest while all the same stuff to get him moved to somewhere else is going on in the background? If only for the better meal money and higher class transportation. The guy who hasn't been able to stay in the majors is worried about getting 'trapped' in the majors because he performs too well on a team he doesn't prefer? I'll certainly take your word for it but it doesn't sound like very good career advice to follow! 😂

  9. Wait, wait, wait, the Durham investigation that was suppose to bring down Obama, Hillary and the etire Democratic party not only found no evidence of crime by them, but found evidence of a crime by Trump and then covered it up? I stand corrected. The script did actually get flipped.

  11. So, waking up to Holocaust Remembrance Day on the tv. Was just struck by the interesting and terrifying detail from a podcast I had just heard that the famous arbeit mach frei portal was put there along with the extension of the rail line into Auschwitz from the rail station some distance away in May 1944. The Final Solution had been in full swing since 1942. The Nazi regime had just invaded their ostensible ally Hungary in March 1944 -- who had until then had resisted handing over to them their Jewish citizens -- with a goal being the elimination of Hungary's Jews. So, the rail line is extended because otherwise the Nazis have to carefully march the camp's new arrivals several hundred meters from the rail station with all their worldly possessions. The portal with the "work makes you free" is constructed to give the ones who are clinging to the idea that this is a labor camp one more euphemism to cling to. all with the goal of murdering a population of people who could have been warned. Some estimates are that 800,000 Jews at the start of WWII with some 600,000 who died. Some 400,000 were murdered in the period May to July 1944. The 20 percent who were not murdered were used as slave labor and used in medical experiments. Yes it matters that (y)our racist uncles or coworkers are allowed to be idiotic racists.

  13. But, you know........he's.........well...........you know. It's a big problem in the NFL. It's ridiculous. He did a really good job with them. I understand why Eric Bieniemy doesn't get a gig...........just look at his past -- not a good guy (plus Andy Reid calls the plays in KC). But Black coaches are not treated anywhere close to equal, in a league that is more than 65% Black players. Wilkes got screwed twice.

  16. You should thank them. Facebook has one good use. Keeping up with kid and pet pictures of friends and family that you don’t see all the time. It’s a complete waste of time for anything other than that. Don’t even get me started on the folks that want to use it to argue politics and social issues.
