  1. I'm so tired of the "spoiled" and "lazy" argument. It's about choice and opportunity. We saw it during covid when places couldn't find workers and some nutjob would get on TV and whine "Nobody wants to work anymore". No. Nobody wants to work for you. Compete for employees like you compete for customers. Nobody is entitled to a workforce.

  2. After the 35-5 start, the 1984 team went 22-23. Then they went 11-1. Then they followed that up by going 20-21. So, two different stretches lasting more than 40 games of the most magic team of all our lifetimes playing sub-.500 ball. It’s what all baseball teams do: they have long funks during long seasons, and then they win rings by getting hot at just the right time. Enjoy the ride!

  4. No politics here please. For everyone. Sports should provide an escape. There are other threads for these (very important) discussions.

  5. Also a lot of low wage workers died of COVID or are still dealing with the after effects... a lot of people are looking at these jobs and thinking it's not worth the risk.

  6. One more thing I forgot to mention from yesterdays game: I did NOT like St. Brown's TD celebration. I'm sorry if all you young whippersnappers thought it was funny or cute or whatever. But let me tell you straight up: It was NOT funny. It was NOT cute. I mean crap man... my heart can't take stuff like that! For the love of all us older guys who are in horrible shape are just one greasy hamburger away from the heart attack... do NOT do something like that again!

  7. Maybe. Baseball is a humbling game especially for young players. 2004’s can’t miss young star, Elly De La Cruz has 1 homer since July 1st. Never saw that coming. Gunnar Henderson hit 28 and 37 the last 2 years and is stuck on 16 this year with 6 total since the end of June. PCA and James Wood started this year as the next to follow. PCA has 1 HR and Wood 3 since July 23rd. This is a weird game to try and predict longterm success.

  10. I don’t take any glee in their suffering either, even though they “asked for it”. We need food.

  11. I got to tour this facility last month. The tech is amazing! All the cubes/offices I saw have glass or plastic what I thought were dividers. They are actually smart screens rather than monitors. Think of the new vehicles that show things on the windshield when you are driving. You can have 8-10 windows open and move them around like you are Tom Cruise in Minority Report.

  12. I'd be okay with that. I mean, I'd rather a full TV crew so that replays would sync and all that, but if the only option would radio synced up I'd be okay with it. And yes I know that technically I could just play radio audio while watching TV, but it's not quite the same and means I'd be stuck with going back to watching live instead of being able to do it on tape delay and fast forwarding through commercials.

  13. I just have to give a shout out to the Dallas kicker, that kick he hit to send in to OT was probably the most powerful NFL/college kick I've ever seen. Was halfway up the uprights from 64. Just an absolute missile.

  14. Ok, well, then, the government should be acting in our interest to bring prices down, not exacerbating the problem to drive prices up. Working in the interest of the people is what a government dedicated to working in the interest of the people would do.

  16. There is a valid argument about the executive simply having the power as congress ceded it, and without a congress that will force authority back, it's Trumps best bet to be able to continue this. But, ceding power once, doesn't mean you cede all power. For instance you can give permission to the police to search your car without a warrant, but if you feel they are overstepping the search, you can demand that they stop which would require them to get a search warrant to continue. Smoot Hawley only lasted a couple of years before congress stepped in and make changes which negated it. Ultimately I feel SCOTUS should side with a repeal of these, especially when there was no legitimate emergency which POTUS referenced to start them. Guess we'll see.

  18. It felt like we had the D-Team (or worse) again yesterday. I remember a handful of mis-pronounced or wrong names said. And I remember the color guy saying after the 4th down stop: "This is as good as a turnover!" Yeah... because that's what it is! It's a turnover on downs.

  19. After watching the Lions/Bears game and the first half of the Vikings game last night. At least after week two Green Bay might be the only real threat to the Lions in the division. They'll be ok

  20. That CNN article is not well done. The Tariffs are an issue for sure, but the major problem for coffee prices right now is drought. https://www.npr.org/2024/12/17/nx-s1-5228008/coffee-prices-brazil-drought-weather These are the two most imported beans in the US. Again, this is from December. Same thing with beef prices. The tariffs are contributing to a problem that was there long before they were introduced. Beef prices have been rising steadily since 2021. Drought again is a big problem, with US herd size the smallest it has been in decades. Low herd inventory ripples through U.S. beef market

  21. Listening to David Frum the other day and he said the Tariffs are a violation of the Article 1 of the Constitution because they give the Executive a funding mechanism separate from Congress. I gather there will/could be a challenge to them on that grounds. I guess if Congress took the controls over who is tariffed it might be ok. Congress has ceded so many of its prerogatives to this clown show

  25. Copied from a friend of mine. (Not sure where she may have seen&copied) ============================ Here is how you, personally, can help reduce the temperature in the country, and move us collectively away from the political extremes: the next time you plan to listen to a podcast, turn on music instead. The next time you plan to scroll social media before bed, read a fiction book instead. The next time you plan to turn on cable news, go outside and breathe in fresh air for 15 minutes. And then make those things a habit at least once or twice a week for the foreseeable future. Our algorithms are killing us. Quite literally.

  26. I can't see anyone leaving the Big Ten unless they are kicked out. They make too much money being a member. 0-12 is a legit possibility for UCLA this year.

  27. The ORCL thing kinda reminds me of the Enron (ticker ENE) and Worldcom, mark-to-market accounting, circa 2000 thing. Part of the dot-com bubble even though ENE was an energy company for the most part (IIRR, they got into internet too). Part of the theme; what's not to like about printing future (years) unrealized profits to the current bottom line. ORCL just played those cards. The stock goes ape **** nuts (in this case ~35% in a day). WTF? If I held any of it, I would have pulled the rip cord that day. There is an old saying; they don't ring a bell at the top. This AI thing will prove to be a spectacular ****-up. While investors love the thought of all these new data centers and all the money to be made... Reality will take over. The insiders and the early will get rich, once it blows up, the losses will be passed down to our 401ks - as it always is. AI data centers need a bunch of energy, water too. It will take years to build what they need. It will never happen. The push is sold as a great thing for us as a people, making our lives better and easier, but behind the scenes it's all about replacing our jobs. NO! Tell me it ain't so. It is so. I just spent the last 40 years watching it develop and happen. Technology is a great and wonderful thing, it can also be a real bitch. Two screws are three jobs. Robots, machines, and AI don't take breaks, vacations, call in sick, get pregnant, lip off, smoke, or need an HR department. If you can be replaced, you will be. And to make it even better, as the company announces thousands got laid off because of this, the stock price rockets another 5 percent higher. They get the gold mine, we get the shaft. Hat tip Jerry Reed.
