A combined complete game between Olson and Alexander tonight would do some wonders for the bullpen. Torkelson has really had a successful time since being moved to the 2nd spot in the batting order. I don't know that there's anything to it, but hopefully it isn't just blip. With McKinstry slumping lately, maybe a top of the order of Greene, Torkelson, and Carpenter is in order once Greene returns? -
Cody Stavenhagen mentioned on his weekly podcast that he didn't think demoting Maton would really be beneficial to his development. He didn't really think that there would be anything to gain in Toledo trying to hit offspeed pitches and its simply something he will either pick up (or not) against MLB pitching. Well, OK. I can get that BABIP is hurting him and he still does draw a better than average share of walks. You hope the poor BABIP normalizes at some point, he keeps drawing walks, and he improves his skill against certain pitches. They're keeping him away from lefties, which at the very least should be happening. But for crying out loud, can they keep him at 2B and off of 3B when he does play? I don't know. With my outsider and unqualified point of view, I think I'd still swap him with Lipcius for the time being. Its equal parts Maton struggling and Lipcius being 25. Lipcius started out the season poorly, but he's rebounding in June. He's had a pretty consistent (level to level) .350 OBP throughout the minors and has an above .750 OPS at AA & AAA. Its nothing earth shattering. But again, he's 25. It might be time to see what he has to offer in MLB, and there's a guy at MLB that plays the some defensive positions that might need to work on some stuff in a lower pressure environment. I would love to hear some truth serum about the thinking of Malloy and Keith. What is the current progress at the plate and in the field, and what is the forecast for their futures. Would love to hear him dedicate some time towards that topic.

Are there any knuckleballers around now? -
Just to add on with respect to Harris’ track record, I don’t know if his first offseason in charge is indicative of anything. It could be, I don’t know. But is suspect his earlier priorities were really to get the foundation of the organization in order. That is to say the evaluation and development work streams needed to be put into place first before the actual players were put into place. Players are going to come and go, there’s always going to be that part of it. But what good is the farm system if the organization doesn’t know how to select players and/or what to do with them once they’re in place?

If they stay at 5, I think I’d prefer Whitmore. But I think I’d prefer moving down and taking D*ck. Part of that equation of course is what else they were to receive (and send depending upon the entirety of the deal) in exchange. I think we’ll see a center moved, hopefully Bagley. I don’t mind the original acquisition of him at the time. I think it was worth an up front look to see if he could be a worthwhile part of the rotation. But obviously Duren is the future in the paint. And I think I prefer Wiseman over Bagley as a backup. Wiseman might be the better trade value, so if he gets moved, I understand that in a vacuum. Obviously any moves are dependent upon the whole of the transactions at play. This much we do know for certain: Weaver ain’t afraid to make moves. I don’t think it’s going out on a limb too far to imagine that he’ll make a deal directly related to the draft. I don’t think they’re simply picking 5th and 31th and then heading into free agency,

This very well may be true. And I understand that the game evolves over time. I just hate what the modern pitching game has become. I don’t know if this is the best way to put it, and I suppose my opinion might be wrong to an extent, but it just seems like pitching has become more about throwing (harder for sure) than pitching. More arms trying to throw maximum velocity in a game. And this, I think but have no proof, is an accelerant of pitching injuries. The 1984 Tigers used 14 pitchers during the season. This season, last season, the season before, it seems like they’ll be using close to 14 different starting pitchers each season. Now, granted, nobody is confusing any of these recent teams’ pitching acumen with the World Series team. Admittedly that’s a part of the imbalance. But aside from the starting pitchers, relievers have also lost stamina per game and season over the decades. The pitch clock and shift ban have helped the game. I know deadening that ball has been brought up, and I think that would be helpful, too. But I don’t know how the pitching usage gets walked back. Maybe it just doesn’t and we simply have what we have unless hitters frequently put the 100 MPH pitches into play enough to force the throwing to revert back to pitching. -

Maybe this was mentioned before, maybe not. But I heard on a podcast that MLB is waiving the written rule relocation fee for the Athletics if they do proceed with the move to Las Vegas.

I can fix this. Everybody in Chucks going forward. Mandatory.

They probably weren’t going to sweep the series anyway. Come back out tomorrow, win, and head home with a series victory. Who’s with me? -

I’m surprised they’re using Alexander today. I would have thought he’d have gotten multiple innings, maybe even up to 2 trips through the lineup, yesterday or tomorrow. -
