Well, and let’s see what happens in the upcoming off-season. Cabrera will be gone. Baez and Rodriguez are possibly gone, but maybe not. $23M and $18M there if they do stay. MeadowsA and Turnbull are in their final arbitration hearing. Alexander and Wingenter would be in their second arbitration hearing. Everybody else is either going to their first arbitration hearing or they won’t have enough time accrued for arbitration. Payroll shouldn’t be an issue. Do they have enough inexpensive talent where some reasonable free agent acquisitions make this team competitive in 2024?
Yes, Ilitch family ownership. People can complain about Chris, rightfully so. But let’s not pretend Mike’s era was all unicorn toots and rainbow ice cream.
While they are showing pitching grips on the TV, I’ll be honest and admit to having a baseball in my office that (1) is soft enough to use as a stress ball and (2) I toy around with pitch grips during conference calls and whatnots.
Normally when a team brings in free agents with kind of contracts that he and Rodriguez got, they tend to make them the faces of the franchise. It doesn’t seem like either was pushed like that last season. Granted, it’d have been tough to do that with Rodriguez while he had his issues. But it didn’t seem like either was in the f front of advertising much before the season started. It seemed weird to me.
In all fairness, nobody knows what the tournament will be. So it’s a little unfair to be critical of the unknown.
On the other hand, this league is good for some dumb ideas. So, cynicism shouldn’t be unexpected.
