Tigers Hire Scott Harris as President of Baseball Operations
casimir replied to oblong's topic in Detroit Tigers
I don’t know that I’d call it rolling the dice. The kid is 23 years old and only 2 years removed from college and the draft. It’s been bad, but this isn’t an unheard of MLB rookie season. -
It wasn't a designed fake punt. You'd know that if you were watching the game.
-
Was he on the hot seat?

I'll add some context to this (even though M fans don't want it). Its an Australian punter that's still picking up the game. The avenue was clearly open to run with the ball (as evidenced by the result). It wasn't a called fake punt. Day and Schiano cleared it up after at midfield after the game was over.

On that note, if the Tigers are looking for a circus monkey for next season at the tune of $32M, I have a resume ready to send to them. -

What’s to worry about? He’s going to retire, volunteer as the first base coach, and toss BitBits to the crowd in between innings whilst wearing the Paws costume. -

Cutting Torkleson, too? The production this season has been about the same. -

I understand that he had a long career and guys that have long careers are slower at the end than at the beginning. But I’m of the age that recalls Buckner for that little ground ball in the World Series. It’s illogically astounding to me that he was athletic enough to be the LF when Hank Aaron hit #715. -

It’s not the length of the game thread that counts. It’s what you do with it. — Casimirfucious -
Rumors are swirling that the Big Ten East winner will face a Big Ten West all star team in the Big Ten Championship this season.

The same Baddoo that seems to be playing better as of late. I don’t think it’s time to cut bait just yet, although his stock has taken a tumble this season. -

I wouldn't be hesitant with it. The physical skills to do anything besides bat & ball have evaporated. There was ample time for him to play 1B this season, but it never occurred. He cannot run anymore. And for all of the intellect that he does have about the game, how does it manifest itself into actual results personally or for the team? So, he can remain a Tiger. He can travel with the team getting his flowers. He can get a couple hundred PAs (and the Tigers do need some RHH in the OF/DH mix). But they may need to be judicious about using the injured list with him as an extension of the position player availability. Personally, I'd rather cut the cord. But there's a way to make this work. -

Or maybe Harris sees a way to structure the roster well enough in spite of carrying Cabrera on the active roster whilst he’s healthy? Let’s be honest, Cabrera isn’t an everyday DH even if he’s healthy. But will he be healthy enough to be on the injured list at some point(s) next season? The “problem” of finding time for lefty hitting Meadows, Greene, Baddoo, and Carpenter with Cabrera on the roster might be more of a part item issue than a full time issue. Baddoo and Carpenter have earned enough to have a look at regular playing time next spring. Cabrera’s physical availability. But I think the roster space could become an issue if the bullpen is stocked with a bunch of solo inning artists and the starting rotation is filled with a bunch of twice only through the lineup types. 12 pitchers and the extra roster spot for Cabrera is fine. I think 13 pitchers and health for all of the 4 lefty swinging OFs and Cabrera on the big league roster for elongated stretches becomes something to watch for in regards to a roster crunch. -

I was at a high school football game. It’s that time of the season. Attendance was announced, and let’s just say it was a bus load short of 10 K, an all time record for the school. I had a vested interest to be there as my kid was a participant. Sadly the home team lost, but damn, what a fun environment to be in. We had to stand for the entirety of the game, and our SRO in the corner of the end zone was 5 folks deep. A regular season game, albeit homecoming, and for all intents and purposes it was for control of the league crown with a few weeks to go. A perfect fall evening for a football game. -
Is it really that easy? I don't know. It seems a little more complex than just saying throw some stuff in a car and find a place a few hours away for a few days. I've not been in that situation, so I really don't know. There are shades of gray in this. Some folks probably had no reason to stay. Some are probably part of the vital infrastructure, but maybe they have families that should bug out for a bit. And then you've folks in the middle somewhere in there. When I was young, my father's mother was in the beginning stages of ALS where she was living with my aunt, about a 10-15 minute drive from us. She had a living space on the ground floor and with relatives and friends, someone could keep an eye on her throughout the day. Well, we had a tornado warning one day. Everybody is supposed to shelter in, right? My dad and a neighbor jumped in the car and raced over to my aunt's to get my help get my grandmother to the basement. Technically they shouldn't have been out and about, right? But they were. Some individual situations like these arise, and so what do you do?

I hadn't paid much attention, so I don't know one way or the other, but ain't many options in Florida. You've basically got to go north to get out. Were there any stories of jammed interstates or gas shortages or anything like that?

Disagree. It should be my call, damnit. -
