LOCKOUT '22: When will we see baseball again?
casimir replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Tigers
My Dearest Olga, I regret to write to you that the battle continues. There had been a raising of spirits heading into the last skirmish, and I was ready to embrace the possibility of the peace pipe. Alas, ink could not be out to the paper, and the rapscallions retreated to the tree line over the ridge without appropriate compromise. Our troops remain vigilant in the hopes that surrender is ultimately not ours to offer, but that a reasonable compromise can be attained. If you could not be bothered to due so, please send a few extra rations of the salted meats. Pvt Scherzer has taken quite a liking to it. Cpl Clark, MPLBA Regt- 1,851 replies

And if they end up surrendering on the battlefield, then what?

LOCKOUT '22: When will we see baseball again?

Its somewhat amusing to hear that there's still time to sign a deal, start a week late, and just make up the first week somewheres along the line with doubleheaders, just as simple as that. The Tigers were supposed to play in Seattle (4 games) and Oakland (3 games). Traveling out there for doubleheaders on single days ought to be a treat, or, more realistically, there will be rescheduling gymnastics that will have domino effects on other series throughout the season.- 1,851 replies

Still shots without context of the part of the discussion should come with a ton of salt. That said, Manfred does have a very punchable face.- 1,851 replies

I would think both sides needed a break from each other, especially with how things fell apart earlier this week.- 1,851 replies

If I were to apply the minimum baseball salary (what is it, $550K?) to the minimum wage at a union workplace where $22/hour is the floor, the top wage earning at the union shop (if you want to use $36M as your ceiling) is $1,440/hour. It's tough to wrap my head around that. Yes, supply and demand and all of that so a professional sports union is not comparable to the UAW or something like that. Here is something else that I struggle with. Changing/inserting different contract language/clauses in between a proposal and a vote. What the hell happened there?- 1,851 replies

OK, I guess I do remember hearing the all star game was the first game played after the strike. So a week to get ready, but they already had been playing for 3 months. Not the same situation as we are in now as these guys haven't even been in spring training.- 1,851 replies

I’d like to know what pitch counts were back then. There certainly wasn’t the reliever merry go round like there is today.- 1,851 replies

Ok, so just the in between innings stuff has been reduced by 18 half innings * 20 seconds per = 6 minutes at the very least. I still maintain that the during inning “action” is where the bang for the buck is.- 1,851 replies

Yes, too many lives have been ruined and/or needlessly suffered already. Best thing possible is for Putin to be put down.

Yes, ends of close basketball games have gotten ridiculous. Hockey is the sport for end of close games.- 1,851 replies

A question for some of you old goats that remember the 1981 strike. I see on baseball reference that the Tigers played June 11 and then not again until August 10. How did the restart work? Did teams have minicamps after the CBA was agreed to? I scanned the first few box scores after the restart, and it looked like SPs were throwing 5 or 6 innings (except for the one game where Schatzeder couldn’t get out of the the first without giving up a six pack). Morris pitched against Steib. It seems like they always faced each other when I was a kid.- 1,851 replies

What amount of time was reduced during commercials? And clearly they didn’t do the same for the playoff games, especially the World Series. I guess good for them for doing that much. There’s not one magic aha that is going to reduce time and improve game flow. Pitch clocks, keeping batters in the box, deadening the ball and keeping it in play. Does the IF really need to throw the ball around after an out? I think somewheres in here it was mentioned that umps could try enforcing the rules and just start calling balls and strikes if guys aren’t ready. But would MLB back them for doing so?- 1,851 replies

Sure, that's fine. Its MLB. I'll believe it when I see it. If speeding up the game does lead to more revenue windfalls than appeasing gamblers, then that's the direction they will steer the ship. Their #1 priority is (acquiring as much cash from the) fans (as possible).- 1,851 replies

I agree with you from a fan's perspective that the most important issue is the flow of the game. They could increase their hardcore base of fans and pick up new casual fans by knocking games down to 2 1/2 hours. Somebody posted a tweet from Joc Pederson a few pages ago and he was lamenting 7 inning games. Hey, get your ass into the batter's box and get ready to hit! I wonder, however, with MLB seemingly noticing the revenue opportunity with gambling relatively recently, has it put the game flow issue on the back burner? They tried a pitch clock in the minors (definitely AAA) a few seasons ago, and we're still waiting on that to bubble up to the majors. Heck, I don't even know if they used it in AAA last season.- 1,851 replies

Maybe I am misunderstanding the point, but are you suggesting that is the crux of the issue at hand? Or is this aspect of the CBA the most important to you>- 1,851 replies
