The: "Can we not do this anymore?" 2024 MLB Draft
1984Echoes replied to 1984Echoes's topic in Detroit Tigers
Yeah I get that.. that's why I said where we finish in the draft will depend on this year's finish "and then the lottery." I hate lotteries. Especially it seems, for the Detroit teams. But if we gain, I won't look a gift-horse in the mouth. If we lose... I'll bitch, as usual... -
How to construct a Playoff/Champion worthy team, D Tigers V.2024+
1984Echoes replied to 1984Echoes's topic in Detroit Tigers
Lot of kids coming up next year I think... I expect Malloy, Keith, Eddys Leonard and Wenceel to make their MLB debuts. Parker already has. And there are other guys with shots to break into MLB next year as well (IMO): Jung may have an outside shot, Lipcius maybe, Dingler? It'll be interesting to see what these guys turn into. At this point, nobody knows... but we'll find out soon. It actually looks like more attention will need to be spent on the pitching staff than on offense... crazy, given how this year has gone. I expect all these kids, even though they are kids and just breaking into MLB... to give us a decent enough offense to contend. If we lose Eduardo though... Who can we depend on to start next year and lead the staff? Skubal? Turnbull? Mize? Manning? Just too many question marks here. It's why I would NOT be bothered at all to buy out Eduardo's opt-out option. He wanted + 1 more year at $20 mill at the trade deadline to do that? Hell yes, I say. Do it. And then we could still use another Lorenzen-type vet for stability and innings IMO. What say you? -
I think this is the appropriate title for next year's draft. We really don't want to be doing this anymore (picking at the top of the MLB draft). But based on our recent comments on another lost season... this is where we're at. Currently at the #6 spot. Unless we go on a wild winning streak to finish this season it looks like we're going to end up with another top 10 draft pick, possibly higher than that pending our finish and then the lottery. Here is MLB's look at an early top 20 next year, I'm sure there's someone in there that can help us... you know, in 2028 or so... https://www.mlb.com/news/2024-mlb-draft-mock I won't focus on any of these guys until next year but, have at it for those interested. And we really don't want to be here anymore. So... hoping this time next year, we can be talking about making a run at the playoffs rather than a run at another top 10 draft pick. And I can save the next MLB Draft thread until November-ish, at the earliest... But... we'll see. We'll see what Harris has up his sleeve...

True dat.

This has been known for over 40 years. He's been ****ing people for over 40 years. In every possible way. He is the scummiest of scumbags. And maga holds him up as their hero. Despicable. Gross. Words aren't even adequate to describe the abject hatred and contempt I have for this POS and his "posse".

I don't think I would call that "moving the needle" so much as... "Treading water." But I agree with holding onto Eduardo if possible or finding an equivalent replacement... and adding another Lorenzen-type. And another veteran bullpen arm. More Chafin-like than Cisnero-like please... -

We're going to be stuck next year with another top 10 draft pick. I don't want to cry over that because that's about all we can expect as upside from another lost season... And I don't see how it's possible to escape that. If we were in the 10-under range and making a push for .500 (we've been there a few times this year) then maybe... but after another losing streak once we hit that spot, yet again... I see a top 10 pick next year. As for improving the team so that we're competitive next year... Harris has some work to do. Oddly enough, I think he has more work to do with pitching than on offense... -
Got tired of the Tigers so I had to switch it over to Flix... IQ was on... Had to watch it, again. Matthau, Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan. Brilliant. You know... like the Theory of Relativity...

Which offseason transaction do you expect from the Tigers that will "move the needle"? -

PS: "not significant moves" is NOT the same as "not adding to the team". Why are you misconstruing what I said? -

I expect he'll add players as well. But what I mean is that I don't believe he'll be shooting for any big-name FA's for at least a couple years. No "big game hunting". Just fill-in guys to fill in any holes... like in the rotation as you've noted. In fact, I'm just guessing... but I'd like to see his first big move this off-season is to offer Eduardo that +1 year at $20 mill that he was asking about... in order to buy out his option. There are other means to an end though, including trades. And I think Harris will have trades in mind first for the next couple of years, FA's second. IMO. -
I'll even offer a topic for Mann: "The Life and Death of Tom Horn".
-
Yep. A character study. Although it's hard to find a compelling western character who hasn't already been extensively covered already... Loved his profile of Dillinger versus Purvis in Public Enemies.

Which doesn't say that they MUST add to the team in 2024. They could add to the team when Harris feels that he is ready to, and maybe that starts in 2025. So, not to burst anyone's bubble... but my guess is Harris is still going to sift through guys, the young kids and the back-end-of-the-roster-guys for another year or two. And before he commits to any big-$ FA signing, he'll turn to trades prior to that to try and land a big name. Again, I'm just guessing. But sorry if anyone gets upset over this... -

Hmmm... Not quite certain I can see it this way... (I'm assuming you're being facetious though...). -
Meh... And this is not a slam on him as a director at all as I absolutely love some of the work he's done... but I think in this case subject matter will pull me in, or not. ... and since I've had zero attachment/ interest in Ferrari's I'll end up in a "who cares" mood even if Mann makes another great picture...

I think this is going to be the next-two-years worry as none of us have any idea what all these kids will actually turn into. And the core of the team will consist of these kids. Harris might not even make any significant moves until these kids get past their learning curves and he can figure out where the holes are, who sinks vs swims, who should be tradeable versus keepable, etc. -
2023 Detroit Tigers Regular Season Discussion Thread
1984Echoes replied to oblong's topic in Detroit Tigers
I would state it less like this... And more along the lines of "these guys don't love me anymore". Which is closer to your last sentence I think... but more personal. "These guys don't want me anymore." Because of the new Org philosophy... of commanding the strike zone and Baez... sort of doesn't. (trying to be kind here...). But if he doesn't think he can get his money back, or more, by opting out, then money probably trumps all other considerations. Then... he is probably thinking: "They're just gonna have to deal with me the way that I am. It's a signed contract." Based on that... I think the % he opts out is as close to zero as possible without hitting zero (I hate absolutes... sometimes), like 0.0001%. -
Actually... I'm good with Ford vs. Ferrari...
-
They probably looked at Craig as a more fungible/ disposable/ replaceable asset than a Julian Okwara. They may be wrong on that... I'm just sayin'...

"Just the facts ma'am".

Done. Added to the PS...

They'll make a couple more moves: as 4hzglory noted, probably a couple guys to IR. Any interesting RB's to pick up? The Giants released James Robinson... if he's healthy he was once-upon-a-time a very interesting RB... And they'll re-sign Craig Reynolds. And they'll find another RB to add to the Practice Squad. Practice Squad. Plus Chase Lucas and Starling Thomas (if all these guys pass waivers that is...), probably Brandon Joseph, Max Pircher and a couple other O-Lineman, Adrian Martinez, and... ? Just a WAG.
