Week Three: Atlanta Falcons (2-0) @ Detroit Lions (1-1)

St. Brown back at practice, still no Montgomery though but personally I've already conceded in my head he was gonna be out this game and possibly next week as well. -
Tigers Name Jeff Greenberg as General Manager
RandyMarsh replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Tigers
Unless you know every single transaction or move Greenberg has ever made you aren't in position to comment on the hire. -
Perhaps they said only right handed pitcher and I missed it, still though even 2 pitchers is pretty wild to me.

This has nothing to do with anything and I know hardly anybody pays attention to this stat anymore but I just heard a fact that shocked me and that's that Gerrit Cole is the only active pitcher under 35 with even 100 career wins.

I remember on the old board when Heyward first became a FA back in I believe 2015, I was so adament about us throwing whatever it took to get him. I think I remember saying something like "Theres no FA in a long time that I want to sign more than Heyward." At that time I was of the belief that he was gonna hit his potential offensively along with his already elite defense, plus the kicker being how young he was so you really wouldn't have been paying for many past his prime years. Of course until this year he never did hit those offensive numbers I was expecting so we dodged a bullet not signing him then but anytime he is brought up I think back to the man crush I had on him that offseason. -

I'm always biased towards guys that can can get whiffs so in my mind I'm more of a believer in Olson going forward. Yeah he doesnt have the prospect pedigree of Manning but his stuff and results passes the eye test to me. -

Oops you're right, not sure where I got September from, maybe I was thinking of somebody else. Anyways after doing a quick google search to verify the date it seems that he was in the Phillies lineup exactly 160 days after surgery. If Greene does the same then that does indeed put in right in line with Spring Training. -

Assuming this is accurate that's got to be the first time I've heard of a player having to get TJ in their non throwing arm. Also it seems pretty optimistic that he would be ready by Spring Training since Bryce Harper had it done last September and he wasn't back till sometime in May. Yeah Harper's was on his throwing arm but they were using him as a DH so I don't really see how that would change the timeline at all. -

Like KL2 I had no idea who Hanifee was, totally wasn't on my radar. Of course when I scour the Tigers minor league system I tend to focus on the guys who are considered legit or on the cusp of being legit prospects and not castoffs like a Hanifee so I can see why I never paid any attention to him. -

Even if he doesn't miss any time I'd imagine a toe injury isn't good for somebody with St. Brown's skillset where so much of his game is about precision route running, cutting and all the things like that so even if he plays he may not be as effective as he otherwise would be. -

Unlikely but not impossible for him to catch Cal if he has a monster finish to the season. Idk its only 1 spot higher just seems alot cooler to say you are in the top 15 all time vs. Number 16. -

I am, I haven't been keeping up with things since football started so I don't even know how it happened or the details around it, just that it's an elbow thing. I just hope it's not a TJ thing since now you're starting to see them more and more even in position players. Either way it would be nice to get to the bottom of it ASAP, Harper had TJ surgery last Sept and was back in the Phillies lineup by Memorial Day so if the Tigers could fix the problem soon he may not have to miss too much time next season. -
Week Two: Seattle Seahawks (0-1) @ Detroit Lions (1-0)

We do need some more takeaways, if there was anything that gave me apprehension about the Lions being good this year based off the success last year was how we would fair in the turnover battle. Last year we were really good in that regard which always helps to masks any flaws on the team but that stuff doesnt always carry over to the following year, particularly takeaways. Bottom line is if they continue to lose the turnover battle or continue to not get takeaways they are going to be in big trouble. They simply don't have the defense that is going to consistently force teams to punt. -

I think Jake could be an All Star in the way that McCann was or a number of other guys who had flukey starts to the season and got rewarded with an appearance for it have but yeah its hard to envision him being a true All Star caliber player. With that said there is nothing wrong with a catcher who gives you a .450+ slugging percentage along with solid defense. If he can continue that for the next few years he would be the least of our problems going forward. -

Also on the subject of injuries has there been any word on Vaitai? The injury didn't look good on replay but sometimes those ones that look bad end up not being as bad as the ones that don't. It would be a big blow though if he is out for awhile, atleast while Decker is out anyway. The line seemed to be holding up ok before V's injury but as soon as he went out you noticed a big decline. I think if Decker was there we'd still be fine since you atleast would have Sewell at RT but if they are both out going forward that's going to be another big blow. -

Yeah it's definitely not good to be losing important players this early in the season. Given the nature of the NFL you expect injuries to happen but you also hope that when they happen they aren't all at once or get season ending injuries early on in the year and thus far the Lions have already had both of those things happen. For a team that didn't have a huge margin for error coming into the season that just isn't a good thing and could end up being a death blow. You already know you're without arguably your 2nd best defensive player for the season and 2nd best pass rusher(atleast from last year) for most of the season and you only played 2 games. -

Haven't been watching him much but atleast statistically EROD seems to be struggling quite a bit since around the deadline. Its like every start he either struggles peripherally, in base stats or both. If the season was a month longer and he kept this up he may have ended up pitching himself into not opting out. -
I know it's not easy finding a two way player but it sure would be nice to actually have one prospect that we could feel good about with the bat and the glove. They don't need to be gold glove caliber or anything but just somebody that you could feel confident in that they can handle their position along with being able to hit. Greene would probably be the closest to that in the past 15 or so years but even he had some questions about how he would handle center and in turn how well the bat would play if he got moved to a corner spot. But other than that every bat we've had seems to come with major defensive question marks, like not small question marks but like "they may need to be a DH" type question mark.

I know it would be one of the smallest if no the smallest market in the league but I'm surprised you don't hear more about Oklahoma City being a potential location. Reason being is that they have strong baseball and softball programs in their universities so I presume there is alot of interest in the sport in the region, also the Thunder have had a strong fanbase since they moved there like 15 years ago. I feel like that while being a small market it would be the type that has a larger percentage of the market caring about the sports team than a market that has a bunch of transplants or a ton of other entertainment options.

I didnt see the players or the grades but I just saw a tweet that said the 6 lowest pff grades for the Lioms were all on the dline. -
My favorite memory of that run was Max getting out of the bases loaded no out jam against the A's. Went to a few playoff games during that run and that was one of the rare positive moments out of all of them. From my vantage point half way down the lf line I thought the last out was gonna be a bases clearing gapper only to see Jackson glide under it for the catch.

I legit have zero memories of games 2 and 3 of the 2012 World Series, and the only thing I remember about game1 was Sandoval and game 4 was Miggy striking out to end it. It's weird, like I know I watched all the games but my brain just didnt record or register it.

Im not familiar with the area but I was always under the impression that the main blame for attendance was not just the park itself but being located in St. Pete instead of Tampa. If that is indeed the case I don't know that a new stadium is going to help all that much outside of maybe the first year or two until the novelty wears off.

RandyMarsh replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
Agree 100% I get the fear of them coming right back and scoring if you leave too much time on but you shouldn't think like that. That's playing scared, go get the TD and force them to go all the way in under a minute. There's less of a chance losing the game that way than losing by missing the FG at the end and/or losing in OT.
