Week Twelve: Detroit Lions (9-1) @ Indianapolis Colts (5-6)
RandyMarsh replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
Looking at the rest of the schedule and this could possibly be our last 1PM game of the season. Currently the only other scheduled one is in week 16 against the Bears but if the Bears get their **** together and get back in the playoff race that could possibly get flexed. The current SNF game that week is TB/Dallas and while it would be hard for the NFL to downgrade a Dallas game with how they are playing they may actually do it. Philly/Washington is also that week so I'd imagine they'd be pick first if it does happen but there's still an outside chance it could be the Lions game IF the Bears do actually get things going. -

Holmes also picked up UDFAs Brock Wright, Craig Reynolds and Jerry Jacobs. The first 2 are still on the team and dressing every week and Jacobs while not being that good did play for 3 years and produce 4 INTs which for an UDFA is a major win. -

I think one of the 2 is CHase Lucas who according to wikipedia is on the San Fran practice squad, trying to figure out who the other one is. -

Does Underwood receive all this money up front or does it depend on if he actually stays the full 3 or 4 years? If it doesn't whats stopping him from taking the reported 10-12 million then transferring next year? -
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5940518/2024/11/22/detroit-lions-super-bowl-betting-2024/ Article about how Vegas is scared of the Lions and is the one team that could really hurt them if they were to win it all. Talked about how they already have been killing them due to how much money is put on them and how they always cover. Also talks about how they asked 6 oddsmakers what they would place the line at right now against the Chiefs on a neutral field and all favored the Lions with one guy going up to 4.5. IDK the conspiracy theorist in me gets worried about this due to how much power Vegas has and the money at stake. They wouldn't dare get in a refs ear about making sure the Lions don't win when it comes playoff time would they?

2024 - 2025 Detroit Tigers Offseason

Just a thought but I wonder with it being a contract year if he was pressing to put up more counting stats? Also the Astros as a whole were worse on offense than in years past with their walk rate being down .70 walks per 9 so maybe something changed in the team's approach? -

RE: Bregman, here's his statcast page, nothing jumps out in terms of getting unlucky. His expected numbers based on contact are a little higher than his actual numbers but nothing crazy. Also of note as somebody else brought up in this thread, if you look at his expected HR numbers by park he definitely would be hit hard by going to Comerica. Last year he hit 26 homers but if he played all his games in Comerica that number would drop to 21. Also the hit would be even worse in Cleveland with 18 and KC with 20. OTOH he would profile well in Chicago where the number would be 32 and also in MInnesota with 29. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/alex-bregman-608324?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb -

Kinda worries me why Philly would want to move on from somebody like Brohm, makes me think their metrics or scouts see something there that leads them to believe this past year is gonna be an anomaly and they should sell high. -

On a side note about that Campbell HS pic,I'm hoping they had risers for the team pics, if not and they were all on the same level surface that coach behind Dan must be Shaq's size since I'm sure Dan was a tall kid and he towers over him. -

I wonder what crack reporter made sure to ask that question? -
I really liked Mac Jones, not for a team like the Lions were at the time but a team that had was more developed like the 49ers. I felt he had plus accuracy, decision making and ability to read defenses and could step in and right away. Kinda like Stroud did last year. Yep I whiffed on that one.... nothing new.

From what I can remember tp was the only one upset since we didn't take Fields or a "playmaker".

To this day I think my favorite thing from any of the draft videos was in that draft Sheila saying something to Dan and Holmes about drafting a receiver and they said something to the extent of "We have our eye on that guy there(points at board to presumably St. Brown) who we can get a little later." I love it cause for 1 it shows that Sheila had some knowledge about the team and knew one of our holes and was engaged enough to actually ask about it and for another it showed that she also knew to stay out of her lane and trusted the guys she hired to do their job.

Is that TP?

Vogt wins MOTY, I really don't care that much about awards especially this one but feel like AJ deserved it. Maybe I'm selling Vogt short since I didn't pay attention to the Guardians other than looking at their end game result but I find it hard to believe he actually managed the game as well Hinch did. Some teams overachieve due to a bunch of players having breakout seasons, little of which a manager is really responsible for but the Tigers on the other hand won in large part due to how Hinch used his players. -
I also wouldn't have thrown a fit if they took Fields and at the time I did like him as a prospect but I still had hopes for Goff and wanted to give him a chance and I also just believe in building as much of the rest of your team as you can before drafting a young QB early. Really the only option that seemed plausible at the time that I didn't like was Waddle or Davonte Smith, I just didn't think either was the type of receiver you take that high when you had as many holes as we did, unlike Chase who I felt was a Calvin Johnson/Julio Jones generational type who warranted taking no matter your situation.

I think my number 1 choice that draft was Chase but Sewell 1B and I would've been fine with Surtain or Pitts. I liked Surtain cause I loved the idea of pairing him with Okudah and having 2 stud DBs, of course at the time I still had hopes for Jeff. Also like Slater as a backup option if the Lions wanted tackle and Sewell was gone but felt in that case they could've traded down. Pitts looks like that would've been a disaster so glad that didn't happen.

Speaking of the Cavs start, I was curious if or when the last time a team started 15-0 and it was the Warriors in 2016 going 24-0. I bring this up cause yeah I remember the Warriors dominating that year and winning 73 but I have no recollection of them starting 24-0. That's just insane!

Without looking at the all 22 film and breaking down every single play I think it's hard to say if a QB truly played a perfect game even if they don't throw an incompletion. I think to truly be perfect you would have to see if they missed any would be open receivers that were better options in favor of a lesser option. Like if you complete a 6 yard pass but missed a guy streaking wide open for a would be 70 yard TD. Sure you made the completion but the "perfect pass" would've been to hit the guy for the TD. Also on completions you'd have to check and make sure the ball placement was put in a spot to maximize the YAC and overall yards gained. Splitting hairs here but if you want to use the "perfect game" almost literally I think that's what you would need to do to quantify it. Basically look at every play and see if the play you made was the realistic best outcome on said play. I say realistic cause the best outcome would be a TD every time but every play and route isn't designed for that. -
According to some of the fans on the Jets board Douglas actually wanted to draft Sewell in that draft but ownership overruled him in favor of getting a QB. Not sure how much truth there is to that but it wouldn't surprise me.

Speaking of completion percentages I was just looking at St. Brown's game log and during this 8 game win streak Goff is 51/54 when throwing to him for a preposterous 94.4 completion percentage. If memory serves me right atleast 1 of those misses was just an intentional throwaway at his feet in the Houston game as well. -

JT Barrett is probably the closest thing to a pocket passer to get drafted early in recent memory and even he has more athletic ability and mobility than he was given credit for. He played with great WRs and had plus mental capabilities so he was one of the few great college QBs that didn't have to depend on just scrambling everywhere to produce big numbers. -

I don't see it mainly for the 2nd reason you mentioned. In college you can get away with raw athletic ability and being a 1 read passer(see Justin Fields) so that is what teams will continue to recruit and start. -

The problem with QB evaluation particularly coming out of college is it is hard to gauge the mental aspect that players bring to the table and their ability to properly read defenses when to audible who to throw to etc. and these are all things Goff excels at. Its much like in baseball where teams fall in love with the pitcher with the raw stuff but doesn't possess the command or "art of pitching", teams will take their chances and assume that either A. that stuff will be enough or B. they can teach those things and more often than not that doesn't end up being the case. Just one example of this with Goff that comes to mind is that long St. Brown TD against Minny, Goff audibled into that cause he read the defense properly which in turn led to an easy St. Brown TD. The pundits just look at the physical aspect and dont give a lot of credit to Goff since it was an "easy" throw but in reality it wouldn't have been an easy throw if the QB didn't properly diagnosis the play and check into it accordingly.
