  1. My problem with Avila is it goes back to the Dombrowski days. The Tigers never really developed their own talent but Dombrowski had the incredible ability of trading flotsam for good players like Guillen, Polanco, Fister, and knowing when to bail on top prospects for veterans like with Cabrera and Sanchez. Avila hasn't even shown that ability. Rebuilds are long and tedious. Houston went through a stretch where they lost 100+ games three straight years plus a 92 loss season. The difference is they came out loaded on the other end and it seems the Tigers are clinging to three players. One who just had Tommy John and another struggling mightily. I'm ready to move on. We should hire that Houston guy.
  2. I honestly feel the Tigers should have asked Dan Campbell to hold the clubhouse meeting.
  3. They signed Baez to the lowest contract of all the big time SS minus Correa. They signed him after Texas signed not only Seager but also Semien. Waiting out the market could also mean that you end up in a bidding war with the last remaining SS. The hindsight GMing going on here is something and I don't even like Avila.
  4. It's amazing to me how the far left is branded as just as extreme as the far right when the far left just want to adopt the same policies that are widely accept in successful developed countries like Norway. Right wing extremism is more akin to the Taliban.
  5. I understand why Correa signed the deal he signed. The point was Avila simultaneously misread the market and lowballed him while offering more money than anyone else. As you have outlined, Avila knew the market. Why should Avila bid against himself and go up over $300 million when no other team would? So we can complain that Avila way overpaid when no other team was offering him similar money? Are we supposed to pretend that Minnesota is some genius organization that knew the market would collapse for Correa and he would sign effectively a one year deal? What would be the point of signing Correa for one year anyways? I'm not even sure the contract he did sign with Minnesota would make sense for Detroit.
  6. Yeah I'm really not sure the point of a one year deal when it seemed unlikely the Tigers were going to be serious contenders, but I would be quite certain that the Tigers 10 year deal they offered Correa had an opt out probably no later than two years.
  7. What Seager got doesn't matter. It's what teams were willing to pay Correa and reports are the Tigers offered him the most. Somehow Avila got played by Correa who ended up signing for $150 million less than what he wanted.
  8. You're more than welcome to find the words "good job" in any of my posts on this matter. I do believe Avila read the market just fine. I don't think Minnesota read the market at all. They were a team that was never going to be able to afford Correa but when he overplayed his hand, he fell into their lap. It seems unreasonable to expect Avila to read that Correa was going to misread his market and end up having to sign for much less guaranteed than anyone expected.
  9. What I'm saying is that Correa settled for $105 million after all the teams signed SS and he had no options. It's possible they could have waited but there is still no guarantee that Correa signs that deal with Detroit vs another team. They gave him the best offer, he declined, they moved on.
  10. How did Avila lowball him when he offered him more money than any other team? Also, Avila didn't offer him that money, Illitch did. Avila would offer Baez as much as Illitch was willing to pay him. It seems more logical considering all the other SS signed for market value except Correa that Correa overplayed his hand.
  11. He's trying next year for the contract he thought he would receive this year but didn't get because he misread the market. There were 5 other SS so there was no need for the Tigers to go to $350 million like he wanted. All the other SS signed and he had to settle for a contract with a guarantee of about 1/3 of what the Tigers offered. There is some risk given his injury history and no guarantee the market will be better next year. As for Baez, I'm not upset with the scenario yet. There's guarantee the Tigers are stuck with him for 6 years. We not even half way through the first year. He could have one of his patented hot streaks next year and opt out. We knew this was who he was which is why he cost less than Correa.
  12. Seems to me the guy that was expected to sign for the largest contract and ended up being the last one to sign for the least money is the one who misread the market.
  13. Seager, Semien, and Story all signed for more money than Correa, and Baez for that matter, so those GM's all misread the market?
  14. But the thing is, it's reported no other team offered him what he wanted. If the Tigers offer at at least $275 million was a lowball, then why didn't he sign a $300+ million contract? If no other team was offering more than the Tigers, it seems like they read the market just fine and all indications are no team was offering more. I would also be shocked if the Tigers offer didn't include an opt out after two years at the latest. You even mentioned uncharacteristically healthy since Correa has a bit of an injury history, the Tigers offer is a safe offer that probably still allowed him to chase a larger deal.
  15. But the Tigers offered Correa more money than anybody else. All the top free agent SS signed for more total money than Correa so I guess the Tigers, along with the Rangers and Red Sox misread the market as well. It seems Correa misread the market as he thought he was worth more than he was.
  16. How is it a failure by Avila to read the market? It seems quite opposite. Correa wanted Lindor money but the Tigers reported offer of $275 million was the highest. Considering it's reported no one went above that, it seems Avila read the market just fine. Other teams filled their SS positions so Correa, not getting the $350 million he wanted, opted for the short term contract to re-enter free agency.
  17. I think a lot of teams would have given Correa the same deal as the Twins did. IIRC the Tigers offered Correa more guaranteed money than any other team. They moved on to plan B and Correa ended up with this Twins deal. I have to imagine if this deal was on the table when the Tigers negotiated with him, they would have done it.
  18. Jeff Luhnow is still available. If you were fine with Hinch, you should be fine with Luhnow. I say fire Avila and hire Luhnow.
  19. I find it surprising the last two people who attempted to assassinate a sitting US president are currently free.
  20. His up season in Detroit is still a losing season.
  21. What has Hinch done outside of Houston, who continues to be a contender without him, that would make teams fall over themselves to hire him?
  22. I could see Chris doing what Mike did 20 years ago and hiring a Dombrowski type as president and letting him fire the GM and manager.
  23. What always got me is the Tigers fired Dombrowski for his right hand man Avila. If you didn't think Dombrowski was getting the job done, why would you just switch to Avila? Mike was alive for that. I'm not sure if that was his decision or not but it's like when the Lions fired Millen only to just promote Mayhew. Granted Dombrowski was much more successful than Millen.
