  1. Whatever level the agreement lands on the owners will find ways to "work the new system" so locking out for a lower number is a waste of time. MLB should concede this point and hold the line on early arbitration and minimum salary which does help the lower tier/revenues/ tight a** owners since its only arbitration and minimum wage that forces them to pay before free agency. That will make it easier to get the 24 votes needed as well. Cost certainty for those who need it or think they do and flexibility for those who don't. And the players who are negotiating, like Max, only care about the big payday anyway. Both sides are negotiating for the wrong thing. The players should want a high floor not a high ceiling and the owners the opposite.
  2. The reason many teams, and it seems Detroit is included, want a low cap is because it's another revenue stream when teams go over.
  3. The longer this stoppage goes the harder it will be to settle with player "service time" lost becoming another issue, and both sides trying to recoup lost $$ during the delay. Maybe floating 14 team playoffs will allow owners to meet the higher payroll limits and clear a path to agreement. What a mess.
  4. Just read in the Athletic that the Tigers are one of only four clubs that ruled against the "final offer" MLB presented to the union. Looks like he is happy to not have baseball. Very disappointing. The others were the Reds, Angels and Arizona.
  5. I don't understand it either. I mean nobody is forcing you to have 240 million payrolls. It seems to me the Union should agree to cap if they can get a high floor requirement that HAS to be met.
  6. Well you can’t blame the owners for using analytics and avoiding stupid contracts. Having said that I think the onus is on the owners since they had the better deal last time
  7. Wow MLB has already emailed me saying they won’t charge me for the 2022 season until...wait for it...there is a season !! How fn big of them.
  8. Are they really that far apart or financially strapped that they can’t just split the difference and settle?
  9. Baez seems to be the type of player who excels in the spotlight. If the tigers are contenders his stats will be better.
  10. Too bad us fans cant have an impact like "finalize by March 1 or cancel the whole season". See ya in 23..maybe.
  11. Although I really don't care I think this new agreement should tilt slightly in the players favor since the last one went the owners way. But the minimum salary ask for a raise from 570 to 775 or so makes me think they are trying to both improve their deal and get payback for the last 5 years.
  12. I would like to see the shift toned down by requiring 4 infielders on the dirt. Shifting in the infielder is fine but the softball player in shallow right field I don't care for . A line drive to shallow right should be a hit and the game needs base runners.
  13. I'm sure your right but 350 million birds in hand .......
  14. 13/350 now in hand. Yes he should take it. Lots can happen in 3 years and some of it could be bad.
  15. Just split the difference and be done with it for goodness sake.
  16. The Big watch is Jobe. He should totally dominate low A if he really has better than MLB spin rate. Most evaluators would have gone with Mayer but Al is huge pitching guy so he is still making the decisions. At least up to now.
  17. Interesting idea. I also think Lotteries are silly but teams should not be allowed to pick low year after year without penalty or ownership change. Your idea will fix that.
  18. I agree with your point that sometimes teams try and injuries etc prevents them from being successful but that and pure tanking is a big difference. Why are some teams low in the standings almost every year ?
  19. 1. I think tanking is more acceptable to ownership when they can have a much lower payroll. Forced to pay they might actually put a respectable team on the field. 2. Well so be it. If the management is poor nothing will ever help them. Maybe hire some talent instead. Yes I do or at least its worth to incentivize teams to try because some teams are not trying to be competitive. Just the opposite. 3. Or rewards teams that actually are trying to win. They still have the main draft to help weaker teams. There are only 30 teams in a world full of Billionaires. If you don't want to compete year in and year out just sell your damn team to someone who will. Tanking is purposeful suck and it's a disgrace and insult to the fans and game of baseball. It's not rebuilding its sucking.
  20. Eliminate tanking by : 1. Having a team spending minimum. Say 1/3 of the maximum. Say 75 million and base it over two years ( team could spend 50 them 100 mil yr 2). All underages are taxed at 2 times the shortfall and go the the players union. 2. Limitation of low picks in the draft. A team can not pick top 5 two years in a row and top 10 more than 3 times in a five year period. 3. Turn the international signing into the international draft. About 10 rounds and draft order ( per Jason Stark of the Atlantic) top pick goes to the team that was closest to making the playoffs and then down the line and all playoff teams by reverse order of wins as usual.
