My impression of some of these comments is that not everyone has attended games where the systems were being used.
I’m an old guy and a traditionalist…and I like the ABS/Challenge system.
From the time the pitcher/hitter/catcher indicates that they want to challenge a ball/strike call until the call is confirmed or overturned takes less than a minute. The Challenge works fine. I’ve been to a dozen games where the Challenge was being used. It does not hold up the game. It is automatic, strike or ball. It’s not like the challenge reviews in MLB where you have to wait on the New York review, which can take forever sometimes.
My personal opinion is that the Challenge system will end up being a soft introduction to the full ABS system, as in, no challenge. The system will read the pitch and the call will immediately be relayed to the umpire, method TBD. For fans this won’t be any different that what you have going on now, except the call will be correct. This, I am ready for.
I’ve attended a number of games where the straight up ABS System (no challenge) was used and it’s totally invisible to the fan experience.
Those in attendance that weren’t aware the ump was a part of the straight ABS system would still yell at the ump when they thought the call was incorrect. I’m sure that will still be a part of the game for years.
Of all the changes in baseball over the recent years, this is the one change that I am happy to see. And with this, I truly hope the strike box on the screen during the televised games goes away.
