Week Three: Detroit Lions (1-1) @ Minnesota Vikings (1-1)
Mr.TaterSalad replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
I think one of the things that really hurt thus team on Sunday and hasn't gotten enough talk is the WCF patch still on the side of the jersey. We all know William Clay Ford is the worst owner in the history of sports and it really feels like that patch is cursing them and holding them back from beyond the grave. Maybe get a patch that says SOL instead of WCF? Cousins throws an INT at the end and Seibert makes that kick if the WCF patch had been removed. -
William F. Buckley is faaaaaaaarrrrrr too thoughtful and insightful for the MAGA crowd. They'd boo the likes of Buckley out of the building. To them, Dennis Prager is an intellectual and Prager U is considered in-depth research.

I think you can still stay more aggressive and attack through the air while still milking the clock before the play start. Being aggressive doesn't mean you need to be in a hurry up offense. -

See, this is not good coaching. You need to run the clock down as much as you possibly can late in the game when you have a lead. I didn't think to realize this while watching the game yesterday because I was so caught up in the rest of the game. -

It's also a should win game. With the way this offense has looked, they should be able tow in this game barring a rash of injuries that keep Swift and St. Brown out of the game. -

You realize you can be both in praise of someone and then later critical of a decision or multiple decisions beings made. This isn't a zero sum game with only one acceptable solution or opinion. I thought Campbell was smart and aggressive earlier in the game going for it. Guess what, I still believe that. He had this team in a good position during the first half, maybe even 3 full quarters. I thought he made several mistakes though down the stretch including the field goal and the decision to call the time out during their final drive. Those decisions down the stretch cost this team the game and for that I am going to be critical. Believe it or not, you can have both viewpoints because a game is fluid not static, things change, and a coaches decision making changes throughout the course of a game too. I know you have a narrative you want to tell of everyone jumping off the bandwagon, but that isn't happening. No one in mass is calling for Holmes or Campbell to be fired. Not here, not on 97.1, not on Twitter as far as I can tell. Calling out mistakes that cost your team a game isn't jumping off the bandwagon. The Lions as an organizaion and Dan Campbell aren't supreme beings who deserve absolute loyalty at all times. -

Is it time to start worrying about Dan Campbell and him being able to run the game right? When does a series of bad decisions and decision making errors become a pattern? How many times do we have to watch poor clock management, timeouts being misused, wrong playcalls, etc. before we identify this as a pattern? -
I bet the Lions on the moneyline for the win and Campbell cost me $350 today with bad coaching decision. Oh well!

I don't want to jump on Brad Holmes and go crazy over this too early in his tenure as GM, but feel it needs to at least be pointed out. His 2nd and 3rd round picks haven't contributed a thing yet to this team. I remember how excited everyone in the front office was was and how allegedly disappointed the Eagles were when we drafted Alim McNeill in 2021. I remember Holmes wanting to trade up into the first to go and get Levi Onwuzurike. Between Onwuzurike, Paschal, McNeill, and Kirby Joseph, we haven't got anything of substance out of any of these players. Onwuzurike and Pascal haven't even seen the field and I don't recall that Joseph has either, which is fine I suppose since they have Walker and Elliott. But McNeill, he has 4 total tackles this year, zero sacks, zero hurries, and hasn't looked like he's going to be a dominate run stopper along the line. It's too early to write any of these guys off or Brad Holmes for drafting them. That said, it might be the strart of a trend of inactivity and lackluster play. -

It's clear there has been a lot of improvement by numerous players and positions groups on this team. D'Andre Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, the entire Offensive Line, all have taken big steps forward and look better year-to-date. No player though has taken a bigger step forward than Jeff Okudah. Okudah looks like a completely different player and his career has done a pleasantly surprising 180 degree turn. The guy is show shades of being the lock down corner we drafted him to be and has shut down several top receivers including Terry McLaurin and Justin Jefferson today. You love to see what Okudah has done this year and especially in today's game. -

I said during the preseason that I didn't care as much about wins and losses as I did about player development and competent coaches that run the game right. While I still am not focused in on wins/losses, they should have won this game. We can't as fans adopt a complacent attitude where we only expect wins games against teams we think they should beat and lose to everyone else. Underdogs can still be expected to win when put in the right situation. I honestly don't believe we were that much of an underdog. Furthermore, while I do see obvious improvement in a lot of areas of this team, especially on offense, I still don't fully trust Campbell's coaching and decision making. Twice this year Campbell has made game-changing decisions that have blown up on him, been to this team's detriment, and put his team in a position to lose or hinder a comeback. We're 3 games into the season and 2 of the 3 games thus far we're talking about coaching as a whole and mishaps from Campbell. -

Are the Vikings really head and shoulders above us on talent? Z'Darius Smith, Harrison Smith, and Eddie Kendricks are the only 3 players I can think of off the top of my head that we can't match them on just yet. Maybe defensively speaking that is enough to proclaim that they are simply more talented overall. -

He was aggressive all day long. He didn't trust Austin Seibert at any point until then. Why the hell did Campbell put the game on the back of an inconsistent kicker who he can't trusted in prior situations? I think you either go for it or punt there. Even if prime Jason Hanson was our kicker, that would have been the wrong call. Campbell blew it here, no excusing that. He was aggressive and unafraid all day until it mattered most. -

As my buddy said to me, Campbell would have been better off letting Fox attempt a pooch punt there then attempt that field goal. -

Brutal drive thus far though, but what a break we got with the holding call.
