Reading the story, it does look like he actually did something good beforehand (stopping and intervening on a domestic violence incident he witnessed). People contain multitudes.

I think Giuliani got spun out because he is such a public embarrassment that even Trump could not deal with him anymore. Plus Trump doesn't want to surround himself and be seen with people who look poorly-put together, which he thinks reflects poorly on him. That might be a reason Steve Bannon, as ideologically pure a MAGA bulldog as there ever was, is nowhere to be seen around him. Trump likes to be seen around strong- and good-looking people who seem like they were sent by Central Casting. He likes people who make him look good on camera.

There has been some smoke over the years regarding Rudi supposedly having an alcohol problem. He's has always denied it. Of course a public figure with enemies will have a lot of random stuff dished about them. Whether the drinking is  fact or fiction, he seems to have become a rather erratic figure in recent decades, whatever the cause.

With Bannon I agree it's that, but also that Bannon is an independent thinker (never mind whether that thinking has any merit) and Trump hates that as well. Bannon wants people to listen to him, Trump doesn't like people who try to tell him anything. I don't think it's that hard to sway Trump, but it has to be indirect - basically the approach has to be to appeal to his narcissism, make him believe everything you are pushing is his idea. Bannon won't/wouldn't do that. He has too much of his own intellectual ego. Plus maybe even Trump could tell that Bannon is crazy.

The article is about John McEntee’s hires, rather Trump’s. When it came to hiring generals in his first administration, Trump tended to hire handsome squared-jaw tough-guy-looking types who ended up being too much like squishy institutionalists for his taste.

Yes, you are right.  I read the article too quickly.  

He does seem to hire masculine looking tough guy types who will make him look good and appeal to his base.  He has also been surrounded by Chris Christie, Elon Musk and Stephen Miller.
