Cade Cunningham On Pistons: “We’re Bad,” Compete Level “Unacceptable”

Quote

November 20th 2023 at 8:33am CST by Luke Adams

After winning two of their first three games to open the season, the Pistons have dropped 11 in a row. The 11th game of the losing streak was especially ugly, as the team surrendered a season-high 142 points in Toronto on Sunday and never held a lead in the 29-point defeat.

While head coach Monty Williams has said he’s encouraged by the progress his young team has made behind the scenes, point guard Cade Cunningham expressed displeasure with the Pistons’ effort level and said the club has to “be realistic” about its situation.

“It’s hard to just be like, ‘We’re good, we’re good,’ you know what I’m saying? Because we’re bad,” Cunningham said, per James L. Edwards III of The Athletic. “We have to address that. We have to address what we’re not good at. Address it with not only our words but on the court, in the huddles.”

Williams isn’t wrong that the Pistons have been a little better than their record suggests. Entering Sunday’s action, the team sat dead last in the NBA’s standings, but only had the league’s seventh-worst net rating (-4.8) despite dealing with a handful of injuries to key players, including Bojan Bogdanovic, who has yet to play this season.

That net rating took a hit in Sunday’s blowout loss, however, and Cunningham suggested the team’s compete level in Toronto was “unacceptable.”

“We’re the youngest team in the league, scrapping and clawing for everything,” Cunningham said. “That should be the last thing that needs to be asked of us or talked about; how hard we’re competing. That should be a given. When we wake up in the morning, we should be like, ‘We got to get to the court.’ (Williams) shouldn’t have to ask (about our competitive level). That’s something me and (Isaiah Stewart) are also trying to stay vocal about. Everyone has to come with it.”

As Edwards writes, Cunningham’s comments may be a good thing for the club. The former No. 1 overall pick is the face of the franchise and a leader in the locker room, so if anyone is going to step up and try to jump-start a turnaround, it should be him. According to Edwards, Cunningham and Stewart have helped keep the locker room connected, so there’s no “turmoil and friction” to worry about.

It won’t be easy for the Pistons to end their losing streak on Monday though — on the second end of a back-to-back set, they’ll host the defending-champion Nuggets.

I'll be honest, to me it seemed more like they were completely overmatched during the game than dogging it.  And you get to a point in the game where overcoming a 20 plus point deficit on the front end of a back-to-back just ain't happening and you play for tomorrow rather than today.  But if Cunningham wants to call them out, hey, have at it.

Except, nobody on earth thought this team was a .500 team, even fully healthy.  There is a reason every one picked them to win under 30 games.

With the hole the Pistons are in now, it’s going to be very, very difficult for Detroit to get back to .500 overall. However, if the team Detroit had in mind can flirt with .500 basketball for as long as they’re together, I think that allows everyone to wonder what might have been if they were relatively healthy through the first 15 games. A .450 to .500 record gets you into the postseason most years, or definitely gives you a chance until the final week of the season. A .500 basketball team would be a bigger leap than many expected after last season, even the biggest optimists.

Wow, this is depressing.

Cade is one of the biggest TO machines in the league.  But he isn't even the worst one on the team.

Cade turns it over 18.3% of his possessions.  Ivey turns it over 19.4% of his possessions.  Duren is the worst at 21.7%.

The Ivey and Duren numbers are really bad considering they don't face the defensive pressure that Cade does.

League average is just under 13%.

that article is the usual JEIII list of excuses for Weaver.

when he writes anything that is even mildly critical of weaver, let me know.  the only time i've ever heard him criticize weaver was a very mild criticism that the bagley contract was a bit of an overpay.

nary a criticism of bey while he was here, and nary a criticism of the weisman return for bey.  nothing on how monumentally bad this team has been for four straight seasons.  just lots of stuff on how great stewart is, how cade is the best, blah blah blah.  not one article on how this team doesnt work around cade.  just one excuse after another for a gm with the worst record of all time.

i expect the team to be mildly better if morris and bogey ever get healthy.  if they dont, that will be the excuse.  if they do come back and the pistons are more competitive but still losing, it will be "they're on the right track."  more bs from the pistons media department, aka the beat writers.

I would think Iveys sample size is small enough that it would level a bit if he handled the ball more.  Either way, turnovers are an issue for both starting guards based on their career numbers.  With Cade, I would venture a guess it’s ball handling and decision making.  With Ivey, I would venture a guess it’s mostly decision making.

For their career Ivey is at 17.4% and Cade is 17.1%.  So sample size isn't the issue.

They list two types of TO's.  Bade Pass and Lost Ball.  Ivey is 70%/30% while Cade is 66%/34%.

Thompson and Sasser are obviously sample size problems.  But Thompson is over 17% while Sasser is 9.9%.

Hayes is great this year at 8.6% TO rate.  But for his career he is probably the worst on the team at 18.2%.  Curious to see if he can maintain the improvement or not.
