Motown Bombers Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 You can tell how far the Lions have come since proclaiming to be a Lions player was more likely to get you arrested before the Campbell era. 2 Quote

What data do you have about the number of stops that are made like this and the number of times these stops lead to arrests or charges? We make cops wear body cams because they are alleged to be too hard on black men. Now people are using the body cam footage to say cops are being too easy on black men. It seems the only winners in all this are the sanctimonious journalists who use snippets of body cam footage to manufacture moral outrage then cash in on it. Ok...star athletes and famous people are treated the same as street people. Quote

Jimbo Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 I think its a pretty simple situation with Jamo. You don't have to make any decisions on a 5th year or a new contract until the spring. If he plays great the rest of the year, we make it far in the playoffs (I hate saying SB with Jamo because its not all on him if we win the SB), AND he stays out of trouble. Then I think you consider taking on that 5th year or giving him an extension. The other option is his trade value will be higher and you consider trading him. At this point, every contract you take on "could" mean you won't be able to sign another important player (Branch, Laporta, Gibbs....etc) because at some point its going to be very difficult to sign everybody. All Jamo did was make it harder for the Lions to trust him. The job for a player is make it very hard for your team to let you go. You do that by staying out of trouble and playing above your position. So far most of the players that the Lions have drafted in the Holmes era has done exactly that. Jamo has finally started playing like the talented player he was drafted for although the off the field issues will make it easier to let him go. Quote
RedRamage Posted October 31, 2024 Author Posted October 31, 2024 Folks just a general warning here: We're straying very close to a political issue here re: How the cops handled Jamo. I don't think anyone has cross over the political line, but we're all (myself included) inching up to it. I mean it's kinda hard not to given this situation. BUT: There is a reason we have a political forum area and there's a reason we keep politics in that area. Let's try to keep the discussion on the Jamo/Lions aspect of this as much as possible and be ultra-polite with each other when we do touch on the "other" stuff. 4 Quote

If Campbell is to be taken at his word, and I have no reason to believe that he's fibbing, they seem to have Jamo's back so I don't think his status with this regime has been effected much by this. Yesterday I was going to make some comment about him Jamo possibly being Titus Young 2.0... but that felt completely wrong so I never made the comment. Young was messed up in the head and it made him do a lot of weird stuff both on the field and off. I know you're not implying it but this isn't even close to a Titus situation but, even though these incidents in isolation aren't that serious, when they compound one after the other it's hard not to be a little concerned that he's just not learning. With that said, it seems like the Lions are in his corner if what Campbell has said is any indication of how they're approaching this. I'd have to think that he's on a shorter leash now, another one of these and it could be curtains for his Lions career. Edited October 31, 2024 by NYLion Quote

I'm probably grossly reading way too much into things based on limited info, but it feels like Jamo's admitting these mistakes and admitting that he's wrong when this stuff happens. It's a case of: "Yeah, I was dumb, I was wrong... I'm sorry, I screwed up coach. I'll do better, I promise." vs: "Man, I didn't do anything wrong. The cops/league/drug testers are out to get me. It's not my fault." The first attitude will buy you a lot of leniency and good will with the team and they'll be willing to work with you where as the second attitude will get you shown the door pretty quickly. But to your point, NYLion, each time you have to come to them with the first attitude the leniency and good will you can purchase gets smaller and smaller. Quote
MichiganCardinal Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 (edited) Regarding extending Jamo, there are so many factors at play that it’s going to be a really difficult negotiation, even if we do want to keep him. You’re talking about a guy who’s played 24 games in three years, effectively a red shirt his first year and not a huge contributor his second. Been suspended six games with more possible down the line. Significant injury history, PED history, gambling history, now personal conduct history. Each of these is more risk added to the equation. I’m sure his side is going to want something like $25 million APY over 4-5 years. How do you justify that when you’ve seen how he acts getting $4 million a year? But he might get it on the open market. It’s not as relatively simple as negotiating with ASB where it’s just “let’s find the number and get this done.” I don’t think you can fault BH if he says, “we aren’t willing to give you more than a two year extension at market value,” because we just don’t know what’s next. Obviously there’s still a lot of time between now and then, especially in Jamo’s world where he averages bad press every few weeks. Edited October 31, 2024 by MichiganCardinal Quote

As you said, at some point being sorry rings hollow if you continue to screw up. I'm sure Brad and Dan are willing to let this one slide but Jamo has to be a on a one more strike and you're out count by now. 1 Quote
Jimbo Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 I think talking about the 5th year or an extension is really useless at this point. A lot can happen till the end of the year. Quote
