I will admit to my own opinions shifting somewhat but it was also heavily influenced by the turn the party made. I always wonder where I would be today if someone like Rubio had gotten the nomination in ‘16.

there were lots of turning point for the GOP. If the other Bush brother had pushed his brother aside it would be a whole different history as well.

I wish we had the old board. I always had it on my to do list to track my “progress”. I do know I shifted after Sandy Hook. When I saw the response as the canned NRA talking points I knew I was different.

I think there are upwards of 5 posters here that were on the conservative and or republican side before trump that are not now.

My leftward trend started with George W and his Iraq fiasco. McCain-Palin, Tea Party, Donald… the lemmings plunged over the cliff while I watched.

Closest I ever came to voting Republican was 2010 and Rick Snyder. I couldn’t bring myself to do it, so I voted for Virg Bernero. First election I voted in was Detroit mayor when I voted for Kwame.

I thought Snyder had a decent 1st term, the Detroit resolution was pretty epic,  but he transformed into an ordinary GOP hack in his second. Voted in MN in that election though.

I wrote a paper my Sophomore year in college supporting Reagan.  I really wasn't interested in politics, but I had to pick a side to write the paper.  My left-wing radical professor liked the paper and gave me an A.  He was a good teacher and it was an interesting class.  Taking liberal arts classes was also a good way to boost my GPA. I voted for Anderson (not Sparky!) in 1980.  I probably voted for Reagan in 1984.  I don't remember.  I later became marginally interested in libertarianism.  There was no magic moment which made me switch from left to right.  Life experiences and observations made me more empathetic and compassionate and I gradually shifted left.

Snyder's Democratic opponent, Mark Schauer, was a true asshat in the second election. I saw it first hand during their debate in Detroit.

My problem is I've had too many bosses who were either active or large donors to the Republican Party pre Trump. Guys with perfect hair who would act like your best friend then stab you in the back.

One even had the balls to call me and beg me to come back to work for him after he had accused me of trying to sabotage the operation.

Then there was the used car salesman turned billionaire who flew his wife from California to Texas so he could hand her the divorce papers and marry their kids' nanny. A few years before they were featured on Lifestyles of The Rich and Famous while we were in the second year of a company wide salary freeze.

Of course growing up in Virginia, all the racist Democrats became racist Republicans. Post Civil Rights Amendment

Part of me wants to say I'm a republican still.  I feel like the party moved, not me, so why should I have to classify as something different?  But I'm sure that's not completely true anymore.  Not sure if I've moderated or if I still fall under  classical liberalism.

You’re not the only one, but I am gobsmacked by how many peple I thought were good critical thinkers who would have moved on, only to shape-shift themselves into whatever they need to in order to conform to their chosen label.
