I read somewhere that the Big Beautiful Bill has more money to spend on ICE that any country spends on their defense budget. They have money to build concentration camps in all the red states. Trump even signed an EO making being homeless a crime. Over 3 more years of this, will America survive? Quote
chasfh Posted yesterday at 01:45 PM Posted yesterday at 01:45 PM 22 hours ago, Motown Bombers said: I think Trump exposed the Republican Party more than he changed it. He allowed everyone to be their worst selves publicly. It is now OK to be public with your thought privately. They've realized they're not alone. Many of the principled Republicans who weren't these people, Cheney, Kinzinger, Romney, are gone. I think this is partially right. There was a fair amount of fascism already baked into the very conservative precepts of the modern Republican Party, such as performative patriotism; the elevation of religion and the military in civilian life; the scapegoating of certain groups of people considered outsiders; corporate control of the national economy in conjunction with the government; and maybe a few others. Cheney, Kinzinger, and Romney at least benefited from all this, if not driving it themselves entirely, and even though they basically left the party, a lot of their fellows who travel along these lines have stuck around. Then the other elements of fascism really came to the fore in in the past decade—the authoritarian leadership; the desire to suppress dissent; the whitewashing of history; the mass propaganda rallies; the rejection of liberal democracy, pluralism, and individual rights—which I believe drew a new element into the Republican party that had been completely outside of it, where they were considered oddballs and kooks at best, and dangerous actors at worst. They were not already in the party, which they considered part of the liberal order they wanted to topple, but now that the party has embraced the fascism completely, these dangerous elements have found a home within where they now have a veneer of respectability and gravitas they could never have had before. So I think it's both Trump exposing and highlighting certain noxious aspects of the Republican Party, and the elevation of those aspects and the embrace of other fascist aspects that has attracted extremist outsiders who'd never felt welcome there before. oblong Posted yesterday at 02:37 PM Posted yesterday at 02:37 PM He also exposed the basic idea that it's ok to be wrong. To lie. It really doesn't matter anymore. You can say the earth is flat and there will be a place for you in public life as long as the voters pick you. The media, what's left of it, will go along. Years ago, I pointed out a historical coincidence. In 1952 The GOP Nominee picked Richard Nixon as his running mate. He mainstreamed the concept of dirty politics and his legacy shaped Washington for decades. 28 years later, the GOP Nominee picked George HW Bush as his running mate. He himself was tame and didn't do much but without that I doubt his son Dubya becomes TX Governor and President. The affects of the Iraq War are still being felt 20 years later and it changed things for generations 28 years later the GOP Nominee picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. They didn't win and she didn't really do much after. But what she mainstreamed was the backlash against making fun of stupid people in office. She was an airhead. Ignorance became a badge of honor. If you corrected these people you were called elitist. The entire Trump presidency today and his cabinet are the ideological descendant of Sarah Palin. The people who don't read, who believe every conspiracy theory they come across on social media. Dumb became something valuable. 3 Quote
Dan Gilmore Posted yesterday at 03:14 PM Posted yesterday at 03:14 PM You both have it right. I think every generation laments a loss of standards, but this seems different to me. It’s not so much as the standards have been lowered, as they have been flipped to actively promote the behaviors the standards had been established to protect against. Quote
oblong Posted yesterday at 03:50 PM Posted yesterday at 03:50 PM Spiro Agnew would have been able to keep his job in today's environment. So would have Nixon. Gary Hart's issues wouldn't have even made the news. Teddy killing that girl would have been filed away and forgotten. Clinton's womanizing and Whitewater would have not have even been mentioned. Jimmy Carter's Chief of Staff had to resign b/c he was thought to have done cocaine and stared at a lady's cleavage for too long at a WH party. Every scandal in since Roosevelt wouldn't make the top 20 Trump scandals and problems. And the odd thing is Roosevelt's big issue, which was hidden, would have been exposed today, his "illness". It shouldn't be an issue but it would be today. You think anybody in a wheelchair could get elected? And Roosevelt's health in 1945 and 1946 was known to be very poor. That's why Truman was selected as VP. He was seen as weak by the party and they knew they were picking the next POTUS. Quote

ewsieg Posted yesterday at 05:24 PM Posted yesterday at 05:24 PM https://archive.ph/YrFmr#selection-1705.137-1725.287 I know I'm in the minority, but I think it would be good for Ukraine to stop this war, even if they lose land. They just upped their conscription age to 60 years old. I'm not even 50 and what a joke it would be to put me in combat. Still, it's too late and Trump can't force Zelensky to abide by a deal he makes with Putin. Guess you could argue that our mineral rights deal would help protect, but that's overhyped crap from Trump already. He probably believes those numbers, but once he finds out its not panning out like he was told, there is nothing preventing Trump from tossing it away. Still, it might give Zelensky and Europe a few years to regroup. Quote

The byproduct of all of this is that he's made us all cynical. These guys just all suck, they're all corrupt, there's no truth so might as well just put on my foam finger and root for my guy. It's pure unadultered nihilism. I remember saying something to this effect to Melody (on the last iteration of the board), but all the cynicism and all the defenses that hinge on saying "they're all like that" is a self fulfilling prophecy. If you expect nothing from your government, nothing is all you are ever going to get. I don't know what to do about that.... I truly believe that most Americans, on an individual level, are better than our current government. Not enough, but a majority anyway.
