US President Donald Trump says he does not know who Changpeng Zhao is, despite pardoning the cryptocurrency multi-billionaire last month.

Trump was asked about the pardon during an interview with CBS News' 60 Minutes programme, which was broadcast on Sunday.

Zhao, who is also known as "CZ", pleaded guilty to enabling money laundering in 2023. He served four months in prison and agreed to step down as the chief executive of Binance, the crypto exchange he co-founded.

His companies have partnered with firms linked to Trump on new digital-currency projects including Dominari Holdings, where his sons sit on the board of advisers and which is based in Trump Tower.

The host of 60 Minutes, Norah O'Donnell, asked Trump why he pardoned Zhao even though government prosecutors had said he caused "significant harm to US national security."

"Okay, are you ready? I don't know who he is," the president said.

Trump added that he did not recall meeting Zhao and had "no idea who he is", only that he had been told that the businessman was a victim of a "witch hunt" by the administration of former US President Joe Biden.

Look at us falling behind other countries in technology and renewable energy. Fire up that coal!

I think it was the Freep that reported this weekend that Consumers Power is losing $500K/day ( a mere $180M annually) keeping Trump's coal plant open, and that's AFTER the value of what power has been generated is put against the losses.

More proof Trump continues to be bad at business. It doesn't matter to him since it's someone else's money.

But people of color using food stamp.....

The kicker is that the Feds didn't have much choice but let CP consign the losses to the whole midwest power consortium, so everyone from Iowa to to Ohio is helping carry Trump's water on this one.

He knew. He absolutely knew.

Yup. This is such a stock pro forma denial from Trump it isn't even worth talking about. But it is one of Trump's most interesting techniques. He has figured out that appearing dumb only hurts him with people that don't vote for him anyway, and he's shameless enough not to care how dumb he appears to his non-supporters. It turns out to a be lethal combination.

Yes, but there's more.

It's also that when Trump appears dumb, and the non-supporters and non-supporter media point that out, the red hats take personal offense at it. Trump has successfully conflated all criticism of him with criticism of everyone who supports him. He has said to the red hats, in so many words, "they hate me because they hate you" (an idea his machine stole directly from John 15:18). This extends to their logical conclusion that the attempt by a wack job to shoot Trump is a manifestation of Biden voters wanting to murder Trump voters.

It won't be long until red hats conclude, "we have to kill them before they kill us." We are not there yet. But we are not as far away from it as naive non-red hats think.

They were forced to hide their racism under a rock. They want to return the favor.
