papalawrence Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Iirc when AA took over for DD, Burrows was Detroit's #1 prospect. Oh how times have changed Quote
papalawrence Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Wow, looks like Workman is getting dfa'd already by ChiSox https://www.si.com/mlb/cubs/news/former-cubs-infielder-gets-dfa-by-crosstown-rivals-after-foolish-comments Quote
ben9753 Posted May 13 Posted May 13 I read the article. What were the foolish comments? That he wanted to beat the team that traded him? Huh? Quote

Oh how times have changed The others in the top five back then were Michael Fulmer, Derek Hill, Christin Stewart, and some guy named Mike Gerber. Mike who, you ask? Well, Gerber was a 15th round draft pick out of Creighton who immediately shot into the top ten of the Tigers system. He made top five the following season. The glowing reports about him included such gems as “Gerber can do a lot of things fairly well” and “At worst, he's looking like a very valuable fourth outfielder of the future”. After slipping to #11 in the system in 2018, Mike actually had a cup of coffee with the team that summer and promptly spilled it all over his lap. He made his way to Japan in 2021 and flopped around there like a caught fish on the deck of a boat before disappearing into the Tennessee ether, where he’s probably coaching a kids’ baseball team while dominating some mens’ amateur league, which, good for him if he is. I think he has to clear waivers, and Detroit would have to decline to buy him back before Chicago can send him to a farm club. But my understanding of such things is on the level of Clifford the big red dog, so who knows. Quote

Back then we had so few prospects everyone would get excited about player who was putting up decent stats despite the scouting sites dismissing them as organizational types. Wynton Bernard and James Skelton come to mind. Quote

He has to clear and we either need to decline buying him back or work out a trade with the White Sox for them to send him to AAA Quote

CMU97 Posted May 13 Posted May 13 https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45115659/pete-rose-shoeless-joe-jackson-players-reinstated-mlb Now we can officially start the debate (again): Will the HOF consider Rose and Jackson now that they are eligible? I think they will. And if some of his buddies are still around and on that committie (Bench, Morgan, Schimdt, etc), he will get in. Quote
monkeytargets39 Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Hey look……they lifted the ban on Shoeless Joe Jackson and Pete Rose because it’s just impossible to have behavioral standards anymore! Quote
oblong Posted May 13 Posted May 13 I don’t understand the point in his statement about Rose being the first person banned by someone other than Landis to die while still on the list. Is that meant to offer up a way out. “Well we never had this come up before so I’m not a hypocrite” three things have to happen for him to make the HOF Quote
lordstanley Posted May 13 Posted May 13 So what's the early betting line on voters inducting Rose at the first opportunity? Or the over-under on how many votes he'll get? Was getting hard for MLB to resist re-instatement now that they've gone full hog into sports betting. Quote
chasfh Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Manfred refused to reinstate him in 2015 and 2020. I wonder what’s different this time? 🤔 Quote

chasfh Posted May 14 Posted May 14 There is nothing Pete did to deserve exoneration, nor is there anything Chick Gandil and Swede Risberg and Happy Felsch did to deserve exoneration. Those guys actively plotted to throw a World Series, yet they got exonerated because Manfred had to twist logic into knots to satisfy one guy’s admiration for Pete Rose’s sleaziness. Bottom line. Quote
oblong Posted May 14 Posted May 14 His logic makes no sense. “Well they aren’t a threat anymore”. If that were the case then he could have done this in 2015 and just said “he can’t work in the game”. The punishment wasn’t about being a threat. 1 Quote
IdahoBert Posted May 15 Posted May 15 The AL Central division leads all of baseball with 116 wins. You would think that the NL West would be the leader, but Colorado’s mere seven wins is the problem and the West has only 110. 1 Quote
Tiger337 Posted May 15 Posted May 15 The ban of Pete Rose was not about punishing Pete Rose. It was about maintaining the integrity of the game. It shouldn't matter whether he's dead or alive. I do think that this was inevitable though given that MLB is now so in bed with gamblers that every broadcast is a game-long advertisement for gambling companies. 3 1 Quote
