I don't think people are upset that calls are overturned, but why do you have to challenge something if they can just correct a bad call without going through the challenge crap.  And most of the leagues have rules where you get a limited # of challenges or if you lose a challenge, you don't get any others, which sucks because unless the call has a huge impact, you might want to save the challenge for later

I think the principle is, the game is played by the players and not the umpires. That’s probably why we never see umpires make a call and then just stop play to change their own call. They require the players to appeal the call instead, if they think the play was called wrong.

I remember a softball game in which I crossed the plate to score, and then after a couple seconds the umpire yelled that I was actually out because I hadn’t touched the plate. Setting aside that I don’t think he saw it right, it’s not as though anybody on the other team chased me to tag me out, or told him I missed the plate, or anything like that. He just decided to call me out, period. I’m shocked none of us pushed back on him in the moment, but the rule in the book is, if a runner misses the plate, he’s considered safe until someone appeals, then the umpire rules as he thinks he saw it happen in the moment. It is explicitly an appeal play, and I believe that’s because of the principle that the play on the field belongs to the players, and not the umpire.

The umpire is not there to rule the players like a king. He’s there to adjudicate the rules like a judge.

James McCann came up with the bases loaded and two out in a tie game in the bottom of the 10th last night, with a chance to put the Diamondbacks into the 3rd NL wildcard position. Popped out to 2nd. But the D'backs are still in it, tied with the Reds a game back of the Mets.

The Reds really backed into a playoff spot. They lost game 162 but clinched the last wildcard spot when the Mets lost to Miami. They finished with identical records but the Reda must have had the tiebreaker. They get to play (lose) against the Dodgers.

Let's use this thread to discuss the playoffs rather than a new one.  

Since going to a 2 out of 3 in the WC round:

Last year one WC made the LCS

In 2023 it was 3 teams

In 2022 it was 2 teams

Obviously interested to see which WC teams this year make it.
