My guess is that Scott Harris believes Verlander would be a suboptimal culture fit for this team.

I think a 2.17 ERA over 11  starts would be good for the team culture!

All due respect to Verlander and Scherzer, Kershaw is the greatest pitcher of his generation.  Going out while still a competent player.  I wished Cabrera had retired about 4 years before he did.

If he can guarantee that in writing, then Harris should totally get him this winter!

Odd fact that’s rarely discussed, he grew up with former Lion QB Matthew Stafford.    Not sure that many people knew that.

It was a pretty famous fact for a while, but I'd forgotten it.

It’s official, the ABS Challenge System will be used full time in all games next year. Two challenges per team.

two unsuccessful or two total? Two total could be a joke if an ump is just consistently wide.

I think you get two wrong challenges before you don't have any more. So theoretically a team could challenge every pitch in an inning and continue to do so as long as the umpire is always wrong, or at least not wrong more than once.

I hope they don't find a way to screw it up.  The challenge system they have for other plays is terrible, way too slow.   I understand that the ball strike challenges have gone pretty smoothly in the miniors.  I would have preferred robo umps the whole game.

Isn’t there some sort of radar system set up in the minors on balls and strikes. I was at one of the Independent League games in Utica a couple of years ago when the system was instituted there. The decision on ball/strike challenges was almost instantaneous

It will go just as fast as you saw them go in spring training.

I've skipped through a lot of games quickly on the DVR but never got through one in 15 sec.......

I will spend zero seconds reviewing tonight's game!

I don't understand why sports need to have a challenge system?  How about just having some guy set up in the booth watching the game and if it's an egregious call, just buzz down and fix it.  If the call is bad just fix it without a manager throwing some stupid challenge flag or whatever they do

I don't know exactly how it should be done, but I agree the challenges are dumb.  If terrible calls are made, then just fix it.  No need to add some faux strategic challenge.

I can see the point of having the calls made by the ump standing right at the point of the play - it's visual, immediate and the way other rules work he's going to be there anyway so he has something to do, but none of that means the ump couldn't be getting *all* the calls on ear piece.

I don’t think I’d like to see officials who are not on the field just suddenly stopping play because they think they see something. I think they should be brought into the play only if players, coaches, or officials on the field appeal to them. Until that occurs, I believe the game belongs strictly on the field.

My impression of some of these comments is that not everyone has attended games where the systems were being used.
I’m an old guy and a traditionalist…and I like the ABS/Challenge system.
From the time the pitcher/hitter/catcher indicates that they want to challenge a ball/strike call until the call is confirmed or overturned takes less than a minute. The Challenge works fine. I’ve been to a dozen games where the Challenge was being used. It does not hold up the game. It is automatic, strike or ball. It’s not like the challenge reviews in MLB where you have to wait on the New York review, which can take forever sometimes.
My personal opinion is that the Challenge system will end up being a soft introduction to the full ABS system, as in, no challenge. The system will read the pitch and the call will immediately be relayed to the umpire, method TBD. For fans this won’t be any different that what you have going on now, except the call will be correct. This, I am ready for.

I’ve attended a number of games where the straight up ABS System (no challenge) was used and it’s totally invisible to the fan experience.
Those in attendance that weren’t aware the ump was a part of the straight ABS system would still yell at the ump when they thought the call was incorrect. I’m sure that will still be a part of the game for years.

Of all the changes in baseball over the recent years, this is the one change that I am happy to see. And with this, I truly hope the strike box on the screen during the televised games goes away.

Get some glasses ump! He turns around and has a virtual reality headset on.
