Before last year we went about a decade where are only All Stars were the token team reps so getting 4 potential starters all of whom are worthy is certainly nice to see. Definitely makes me more interested to watch the game for a change.

Shout out multi time “all star” Gregory Soto.

I thought that was the game where Pete Rose collided into Fosse, causing a neck injury?

Rose flattened Fosse in the 1970 game.  According to Google..he got hurt on 1971 during a brawl with the Tigers.  Apparently he suffered a laceration on his hand

This article drives me nuts. Links to a paywall piece, regurgitates everything behind it, does no reporting. And we wonder why journalism is dying...

SportingNews has been a zombie site for a few years now. It’s a shame they have a great legacy name that they are soiling. Same with Newsweek and now Sports Illustrated.

We’re halfway through the season, but this team still amazes me. Everyone, top to bottom, contributes. There may be rough spots where the club underperforms, but it’s not annihilating or of bewildering duration. It’s not a team that’s top heavy and completely nonfunctional if some of the main pistons misfire.

I love how it’s an actual team and not just a collection of big egos and mercenaries. Sulking stars do not fit in.

When you see how a guy like Torres, who came from the biggest show in the show fits seamlessly into the club’s élan it gives me hope that this is something sustainable and not just an aberrant one off thing.

Maybe because I’m so invested in it, what the Tigers are doing seems remarkable and unique to me when it isn’t. Maybe every winning team is like this when it’s winning

But I just get the feeling that something different is transpiring in Detroit. I’m not sure our previous teams that did well were like this. This same élan seems to prevail throughout the organization in the farm clubs too.

Beautifully put. This Tigers organization is like no other Tigers org in my lifetime. It is everything I have wanted to see in this team for at least the least quarter century. I’m glad I’ve lived long enough to see it.

Stupid management got what it deserved.  And we all suffered.   Imagine that team adding some FA pitching.  Looking at BR I see the following:

I don't see some of those as likely to come to Detroit but... not having a reputation for miserly behavior would help.

We signed eight free agents on that list. Six of them spent 1989 as the last year of their career here, and one didn’t even make the team.

So Skubal put on quite a show for the ESPN Sunday Night telecast, 13 strikeouts. And his next start is Saturday, July 5th in Cleveland. It's the Fox game of the week. Another chance for the Tigers to show off just how good this team is. 😁😁

Another Skubal game I will be on the road for or otherwise have a scheduled conflict with and will be unavailable to watch. That will make four straight Skubal starts, and six of the last seven, I will have had no opportunity to see him pitch, outside of stolen looks at snippets on MLB.tv. At least it will be a nice birthday treat to see him starting on July 11th.

Stieb and Key were both better than Morris, and I don't even think it's close.

I remember at Tigers Camp with some players and other campers a discussion of the best pitchers of the 80s. Rozema was extolling the virtues of jack morris, and I said he was good but he wasn’t the best. Rozema asked, who was better?  I said Dave Stieb. Rozema thought for a second and said, yeah, you got a point.

I wonder at the start of the year what the odds would've been on Javy being the starting OF in the All Star Game?

FanDuel would not have even offered up the prop.

Well happy birthday. Mine is in February,  it's always sucky weather.

American League only? Nolan Ryan was really, really good in the 80's.

I remember when TSN started to suck a few decades ago and I decided to stop my long-time subsciption.  They kept sending mail to me and offering discounts begging me to come back.  I finally wrote to them telling them to stop sending mail.  I said that I used to look forward to their publication each week and it was a big part of my life.  I told them that they needed to go back to the way they used to be and stop trying to imitate the USA Today.  To their credit, the mails stopped after that.

It’s true, whenever I do research that leans heavily on SN, I notice a huge drop of in quality right around the time they started focusing on other sports in the 70s.

I am too young to remember pre-70s TSN, but it was still great in the 70s.  They did start covering every sport at some point in the 70s, but they still covered every MLB team every week and still had all the box scores and stats every week which was a big deal at the time.  It really started to go downhill in the 80s.

Get your hands on SNs from the 30s through the 60s, especially, and you will see what I mean.

Morris won more games and that was when wins were seen as the ultimate pitching stat.  But he's way behind in WAR, ERA, WHIP

Morris might be the worst modern day pitcher to get inducted in the HOF.

Steib was clearly better than Morris.  Comparing Key and Morris is apples and oranges.  Key had better rates, but Morris was a workhorse who pitched a lot more innings and complete games.  I doubt Key would have had the same rates as he did pitching as many innings as Morris.

I love what they are doing.  I still don't know how good they will be at retaining players.  There is still a danger they will be the next Tampa Bay which some might like, but I want better.

We also don't know how good they will be drafting players. It certainly looks promising but no player under the current regime has done anything in the pros yet. Outside of Torres and Mckinstry our whole lineup is Avila guys as is Skubal, Olson and Mize. While those guys almost assuredly wouldn't be as good as they are without the improvements Harris as made internally the fact remains they weren't his players.

Well, then, that means I can actually watch the game. Cool.

That also means he pitchers next Saturday the 12th, only two days off before the All-Star Game. Hopefully, though, they re-do the rotation so he comes back and pitches again next Friday, Saturday at the latest, instead of sticking to the next slot in the rotation, which would delay his next start until a week from Tuesday, minimum.
