I moved away from Michigan in 1990. Most of my friends are not Tigers fans. Most of those guys say the 1984 Tigers are amongst the greatest teams ever. The current system is very different, but imho just as exciting for the fans, including the farm and sustaining excellence

Here's the '84 Tigers game by game record.

https://www.baseball-almanac.com/teamstats/schedule.php?y=1984&t=DET

- The Tigers were 30 games over .500 after their first 40 games of course, at 35-5

- They then played the next 40 games at .500, as they were 30 games over .500 after their first 80 games, at 55-25

- But by 100 games in they were 38 games over .500

- At the 3/4 of the season they were back down to 35 games over .500, at 78-43. So after the 35-5 start they played the next half of the season, 81 games, at just 5 games over .500 (43-38, .530, 86 win pace). That's the closest I can see to "played .500 ball after the 35-5 game start"

- Then they turned it on again and finished the season 46 games above .500, having played the final 1/4 in 26-15, .634, 103-win pace

That's about it. I didnt do the in depth math. Actually I heard from a few different sorces that they played .500 ball after that huge start. A little over .500 it turns out. Still it goes to show what a big lead can do.

A few different wrong, inaccurate sources.

I'm so sick of this fake "factoid," and I'm not sure how it's been allowed to persist this long.

In all fairness, he didn't call it a "factoid". 😉

It really doesn't show anything.  .565 is not a little over .500.  It's a 92 win pace over 162 games.  That would have been better than any other team in the American League that year.  And they didn't really build up a big lead until late in the season.  The Blue Jays were within striking distance well into the summer.

What is true for a fact(oid) is that the Yankees had a better record than the Tigers after May 22 that year.

Someone tell the Big Wheel to call in sick for this one

On a serious note, he is still an employee for the Tigers, so he is associating with somebody (Monroe) they probably don't want their employees associated with right now.

Going into the second half, it would be great to add some good players but most of the performance is going to come from the guys on the roster now. They did it last year. Meadows was huge for them in the second half. Baez, Tork and McKinstry going from question marks to contributors has been the key to the first half. Now they need more guys to step up and perform. Could be Carpenter, Meadows, Vierling, some of the bullpen guys. It should be a fun ride.

Nobody tells Lance Parrish who he can associate with!

Lance is almost 70, made $12M when that was still pretty good money. If he hasn't been foolish he should be past worrying about his future employment prospects.
