I think he needs to stay almost 100% healthy over the next 14 months if he expects 400 million. I certainly hope that he does, and that today is just a minor setback

He'll be 29 next season. Realistically he's in his prime for 3 more years. Really worth carrying 7 years at 40 million for a #3/4 ish starter? I dont think so. Trade him for a crapton then mvoe on.

If he stays healthy some team will give him 400. I'm not opposed to trading him for a great package

Even if he never got a twinge this season and was 100% the entire year:

Winning or in the top 2 or 3 Cy Young candidates two years in a row puts a huge (trade) premium on him.

Some teams will be willing to pay that trade premium, others not.

Referencing the injury... if not this year, then always the possibility in a future year...

And there's always the danger that he declines during his next contract. A big danger there.

IF...

We were to receive an overpay offer with at least a couple/ a few very high-end future talents, and at least a couple guys "MLB-ready"...

I couldn't say no to that.

Not that I'm the Tigers GM or anything like that...

Glass half empty:

If the Tigers collapse completes and they miss the playoffs, I think Harris listens to offers for Skubal. And they lose Torres and have a regression next season. And Betty White and Tim Conway reincarnate as twins to a couple in Pittsburgh

And Harris and Hinch will finally get fired, Dombrowski and Leyland get rehired, they’ll bring in Miggy as hitting coach and JV as pitching coach, they‘ll junk the rest of the useless coaching staff and all the analytics we’re losing with, they’ll sign Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman and Kyle Schwarber as free agents, trade for Bobby Witt Jr and Nick Kurtz and Paul Skenes and that Miserableski guy, exhume the remains of Mr. I to make it all happen, and everything will be back to normal.

Zero chance AJ or Harris gets fired. The organization is on a positive path. Slight chance that Skubal gets traded this winter, and it increases if Det misses the playoffs. I stand by my Betty White prediction.

My impression is that the general consensus on this board is that Harris could have, or should have, done more to help this team at the deadline. If the Tigers don’t make the post season, or make an early exit in the playoffs, I’m sure this conversation will be a permanent topic for the history books, warranted or not.
Regarding Skubal, he is probably the most intense competitor on this team. He is, THE SHOW. He lives for every pitch of every start. Skubal wants to be front and center of any rotation and he wants to win. He’s had a taste of the playoffs and that’s his goal every year going forward. There aren’t many Skubals out there.

Hypothetically, let’s just imagine that before this season Skubal was privately open to staying in Detroit beyond next year. If my imagined hypothetical did really exist, I could see where the lack of aggression on the front office’s part to improve the team for the second half could leave a negative impression on Skubal. Prime time players want to win and play on winning teams. They want to know that the organization will support and reward success. Skubal has busted it for himself and this team. I have to wonder, after the deadline moves, or lack thereof, if Skubal feels like the FO didn’t have the teams back. Money aside, this would discourage any player worth his salt from wanting to return.
Realistically, I know Detroit will never retain Skubal beyond next year. But looking beyond just the money, Skubal’s impression of the organization may not be what it was at the outset of this year.

Just thinking out loud…

I was always convinced that staying in Detroit was never an option for Skubal.  Ilitch will never spend money to retain guys like Greene and Tork and he will never spend money on free agents.

Scott Boras and Skubal know the team will always be in the 2 year window to win with a lot of luck and then a 3 or 4 year rebuilding period before they get another window and that's if all the prospects pan out.

Why would Skubal want to commit to that?  The Mets, Yankees, Phillies, Dodgers, and Boston can throw a lot more money at him than the Tigers and they have a chance to win it all every year.

Unfortunately, that is the reality of the Detroit Tigers organization.  Ilitch is concerned with making money instead of winning, and that's the bottom line of owning a business.

A lot of the frustration is how well the Tigers were doing this year and then having Harris do very little if nothing to improve the team at the deadline.  Maybe he was following orders from Chris?  Hinch on the other hand is in control of the team on the field and I think he has made very poor decisions at times.  I was at the game yesterday and when he rolled Vest out in the top of the ninth everyone around me groaning.  You just knew what was going to happen and it did. Injuries played a big part but other controllable decisions factored in to the teams performance.  I don't think anyone will be fired but someone should be.
As for Skubal, I would hate to see him go but if they have no intention of resigning him or even offering him a competitive offer then he should be on the block this off season and see what they can get for him.

I think Hinch has zero integrity, is an inept leader, is arrogant beyond belief, and has been responsible for losing 6 or 7 games that the team should have won based on his awful decisions.

But what was he supposed to do in that situation?  Vest is the closer.  You have to roll with him in the 9th.

Imho on paper the Tigers are about a .500 team without Skubal. They've regressed back to where they probably belong. 162 game season tends to even that out. If they do trade Skubal it could be a frustrating year in 2026.

If they trade Skubal they are basically saying they aren't serious about competing in 2026.

But I also felt they weren't serious this season either but everything fell into place perfectly.  I have a feeling Harris was mapping out trades for Skubal at the beginning of the season that he could pull off, but he couldn't justify trading him while the team had the best record in baseball.  If they miss the playoffs, I can see him sending him somewhere for magic beans.

Well, TBF, given Vest's overall superior ninth inning save performance this year, there was nothing to indicate he would cough up the game, and yet, he did. It happens, but man, what a terrible time for him to turn into a pumpkin.

This, 100%. There is zero chance we trade Skubal unless we simply trade everyone else of any value, blow it all up, and start over.

This, 0%. Smells like existential spiraling.

We’ll never know, but I think it’s just as likely that they would stay on the track they’re on regardless of whether we win the World Series or miss the playoffs. Scott Harris famously has a plan and I think there’s a good chance he’s sticking to that plan, unless Baby Doc forces his hand, which I doubt would happen since he’s not Papa Doc.

He'll probably stick to his conservative plan, but I think becoming more aggressive is more likely than starting a new re-build as a couple of posters fear.

Are there posters fearing a rebuild? I think it’s more like posters wanting another rebuild since they want to trade Skubal and Riley and maybe anything else decent that moves.
