But I don't think Detroit would do it. The big one is it would let them keep their mid level exception they are using on Schroder. They could sign more free agents or trade for a guy that fits into the exception without having to send a player out. It basically would give them more flexibility. 1 Quote
Betrayer Posted Tuesday at 05:15 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:15 PM Just saw a post that said you can't do a sign and trade for a 2 year deal, which is what was originally reported for Schroeder (2 for 30M). So, the announcement of this new deal for 3 years (the last year could be an option) might actually mean it's more likely that there is a S&T involved and that could have been the hold up with Sacramento trying to structure a 3rd year on the contract to make it work. Just speculation, but interesting. 1 Quote
Deleterious Posted Tuesday at 05:52 PM Author Posted Tuesday at 05:52 PM So he is broke. Suit: Beasley, subject of betting probe, had financial issues Quote Malik Beasley, an NBA player under investigation in a federal gambling probe, had "financial issues" and struggled to pay back a $650,000 advance this year, according to a lawsuit filed by his former marketing agency. Quote An attorney for Hazan Sports wrote that the firm "elected to take a chance and make a substantial investment of time, effort, and resources in a player with known issues (including and especially financial issues)" when it took Beasley on as a client in November 2023. Beasley terminated the deal two years later on Feb. 27, according to the suit. Hazan Sports tried to recoup a $650,000 marketing advance "but received little more than drips and drabs of sporadic payments and vague promises to repay the balance over time," the suit alleges. Shinzaki Posted Tuesday at 09:05 PM Posted Tuesday at 09:05 PM Three of the four of the main additions to the roster last year are gone. Only Tobias remains Quote

I'm not certain I understand this. LaVert is basically a replacement for Hardaway and Monk is a replacement for Beasley. These are sideways movements... And have nothing to do with Dumars. With THJ and Beasley better 3-pt shooters but LaVert/ Monk better in other areas (rebounding, assist-to-turnovers, age (LaVert 3 years younger than THJ), slight defensive edge, ball-handling, etc...). I don't see anything better than that. But I don't see anything worse than that either. I'm fine with these two moves. It's basically 2024 Status Quo, and puts the onus, again, on improvement from all the kids. The two disappointing things to me are getting Paul Reed back instead of finding an improvement in backup center. And losing Schroeder without a replacement (at this point). I know Stew is probably fine there... but I would love to shift him over to backup PF, jettison Simone, and find one other guy... not Paul Reed... as a backup 3&D Big. I know they're impossible to find... maybe Simone has a recovery year in 2025? And I don't think much of Schroeder except for one thing: he wasn't a turnover machine. Could we have one ball-handler who is calm and cool under pressure, and has a 3-1 or so assist-to-turnover ratio? Who distributes the ball with extremely-high-execution-rate (sans all the turnovers)? But that's just me. My 2 cents. Quote

Hart Posted Tuesday at 09:44 PM Posted Tuesday at 09:44 PM Not that I watch a ton of NBA outside of the Pistons but I would rather have THJ than Levert. 1 Quote

Deleterious Posted Wednesday at 05:38 AM Author Posted Wednesday at 05:38 AM Dude is flat broke. Owes people all over. He owes a barber in Milwaukee $27K. Owes Dan Gilbert about $20K for rent. A dentist $35K. A company that loans pro athlete's money won a judgment against him for $5.8 million. He owes that marketing firm a little over $2 million. They filed a lawsuit against him, and he was served during the playoffs while in NYC. Quote
slothfacekilla Posted Wednesday at 03:42 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:42 PM Damn, that is sad about Beasley Quote
Shinzaki Posted Wednesday at 04:02 PM Posted Wednesday at 04:02 PM (edited) 27k to a barber...this is why I shave my head. On the bright side..assuming he lives long enough to get there, he'll collect somewhere north of 100k a year in pension benefits...so he won't die completely destitute. This is where the WNBA has an advantage...if Sophie Cunningham found herself in a similar situation, she could do an OnlyFans and probably make as much or more than she does from hoops Edited Wednesday at 04:04 PM by Shinzaki 2 Quote
Betrayer Posted Wednesday at 05:02 PM Posted Wednesday at 05:02 PM With the moves the Pistons have made they still have the choice to approach this from two directions: Stay Over the cap: Kings have structured the Schroeder deal in a way that allows for it to be a S&T. This could give us a trade exception or allow us to bring in a player from the Kings or even rope in a third team. Go Under the cap: We would still have the 8M Room Exception to use. Quote

I have them $4 million over the cap already. And that is with me using Reid's must smaller cap hold, not his contract value. Quote

I suppose it could be wrong, but he seems to know his stuff. I guess we'll find out in 4 days when all of these things become official. 1 Quote

Deleterious Posted Wednesday at 11:45 PM Author Posted Wednesday at 11:45 PM I saw Keith Smith on Motor City Hoops. I didn't catch the part on how it happens, but he said the Room Exception is available to Detroit if they want it. The odd thing is, I got the numbers from Spotrac which is the site he works for. They are definitely over the cap, so it has to be some procedural thing in the CBA. If you sign a free agent on the third Monday of the month in the summer solstice, his salary only counts 50% towards the cap in odd numbered years. Or some BS like that. Either way, nice to know we still have it. Quote
