Unpopular opinion.  The female Cards personality is an improvement over Natalie Kerwin.

I could swear I’d seen Alexa Datt before and I had to look her up. She put in a couple years at MLB Network, doing some afternoon show I used to watch, and I’d pretty much forgotten.

listening to a little bit of Tiger Territory this morning.   First, if you have the same IP/geo as me you get to hear that Biden is responsible for the cost of everything because of lawsuit abuse which I know I've bitched about before...how are they still running that ad?

Second...they are talking up Riley Greene for MVP but noted he's a bit too low on personality and might want to brand himself a bit more.  That got me thinking.   What is up with this team being on the same trajectory as the Lions and having all sorts of the same grit and none of the players are anywhere near the love or media presence as the Lions.

Maybe they are still metaphorically in between the Lions second Dan Campbell season (ended with interception of Aaron Rogers last pass as a Packer) and first playoff run in terms of success in the life cycle of this rise of the team.

As bad as the recent Tigers teams have been, many of us have lived through stretches of dominance and success.  This is all new for the Lions.  Also, the NFL is significantly more popular than MLB (or any other sport), so that factors in.

Because the NFL draft has more viewers than the world series.

Indeed, the NFL is very popular.

But for a player of his caliber and apparent non-murdery character, Riley Greene's particular popularity or media presence seems low both locally and nationally for an MLB player for whom English is a first language.

I think Riley will always fly under the radar cause he doesn't excel at things the MLB hypes like HR, steals or overall flashiness.

You basically need to either be a 40/40 type guy or 50 HR guy to get any type of national hype.

Even Trout didn't get hyped much in his prime.  Baseball has never been good about marketing players.

Baseball is different.  I'm not sure what it means to be marketed.  They play every day.  When the season is over they all go home to warmer climates.  They come back in January for some media tours where they are led around to controlled environments, then go to Florida for a month and a half.   They were lucky enough to have an off day for a Pistons home playoff game so they were marketed during that.  But for the most part they are too busy to be seen around town doing stuff. You'll find handful of cases where someone's reading to kids in school or visiting a hospital.

NFL players have all week after their practices to show up at events if need be.

JV had Kate Upton to market though.

I am thinking more nationally, but sports are followed so much differently now than when I was a kid.  Young fans don't sit and watch entire games anymore. They have their fantasy teams and their bets and they have access to any game and any highlight they want, so they jump around from game to game or just follow social media for highlights.  Baseball is difficult because it's not exciting.  In a world of short attention spans, the nature of baseball doesn't grab a lot of attention.  This is why they will never do anything to cut down on homers and strikeouts.

I remember when ESPN did their "Fame" rankings a few years back where they took the 100 most famous athletes in the world.

They used things like endorsements, social media followers and mentions among other things and I think out of the 100 only Ohtani made it from baseball. Just wild knowing how famous baseball players once were.

Agree, Reggie Jackson was once a media figure like Michael Jordan was.

The Billy and Reggie show was a hit for a few years in the 70s. As a kid in the 70s, the mlb all-star game was more relevant than Christmas

I still remember when I was maybe 6 or 7 yrs old my Dad waking me up in the morning and saying "Do you know what today is? It's the All Star Game!"

It was a big deal to me but for him and probably his generation it was even bigger.

BTW the game in question was the game where Bo Jackson led off the game with a HR. He was one of my favorites at the time so that was a cool thing for me.
