If he could play in the field, it would be easier to deal with his extreme platoon split. Of course it's always a matter of choices. It's not like there is someone at Toledo currently making the case for a shot. Almost all the better performers at Toledo are guys who have already been looked at and not done much - Jung, Jones, Kreidler etc. The roster spot will disappear when they bring back a 13th pitcher, or if not then certainly when Parker is activated so it's a short term concern. RandyMarsh Posted May 24 Posted May 24 Kwan, Ramirez and Santana have a career OPS of a billion against us. I haven't fact checked it but I believe it to be accurate. Quote

A Malloy type is a lot more necessary to have when you don’t have a productive Tork, a productive Javy, a productive Dingler, Vierling and Ibanez on the roster. This current version of the Tigers offense isn’t as desperate for RHH as it was last year. He’s definitely good to have for depth though. Edited May 24 by monkeytargets39 1 Quote
Arlington Posted May 24 Posted May 24 (edited) What was the logic for using Malloy to pinch hit for Ibanez yesterday? Did he profile better against Maddis, a righthander? Was it an increased liklihood of a walk? The difference was small and would love to know what Hinch was thinking. Thought came to me just after I posted the above. What if MLB expanded the active rosters? Would an active roster of 35 players make the game more interesting? Right now a roster spot is very valuable. You want to get as much all-round production out of each player. There are specialists who may do one or two things exceptionally well but their use is limited so they are not on the roster. Would a manager having more potential moves such as inserting a base running specialist or a defensive infield make it more interesting a game? Just pondering. Edited May 24 by Arlington Quote

That's because I'm a good neighbor and mind my own business. Folks around here are super nice, and not just nice in front of you. It truly is like living in a different country sometimes. My "southern" is still not good, probably never will be. I occasionaly run into someone, usually older, that i can't understand one bit, and I have to have someone interput for me. Then I'm just a stupid Yankee. Although I will always get "Ya'll aint from around here", I love it and probably will stay forever. 2 Quote

I imagine he’s just more likely to draw a walk/get on base…which is what we needed down 2 runs at that point. As fun as it is to watch AJ mix and match the lineups and pinch hitters, any roster size more than this would be out of control. Firstly, a lot of guys would be on a roster and get minimal playing time—if any at all. It’s already hard enough to be successful as a pinch hitter—imagine going 7 or 8 games on the bench in between at bats. Likewise, teams would use a lot of those spots on pitchers—meaning the strategy of trying to get the other team to burn their left handers or specialist pitchers would be severely limited and would erase the advantage of having an Ibanez or JHM type. Third, the Dodgers, Mets and Yankees would just have more roster spots to buy up every good free agent. Lastly, teams can barely get 26 positive players onto a squad—would it really be necessary to have an extra 8-10 guys on the active roster if most of them are Kriedlers/Baddoos/Madris/Hicklens/Workmans? RandyMarsh Posted May 24 Posted May 24 (edited) I wanted Hinch to hit Greene for Torres in the bottom of the 7th when we had the tying run in scoring position. With a righty on the mound I felt like that was the key spot in the game and time to use Greene as a pinch hitter. Even if Greene failed, with 2 innings left there would have been a relatively good chance that he got to hit again so you could've gotten him 2 at bats in potential high leverage spots instead of just 1 when he hit him where he did.
