AlaskanTigersFan Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Ken Rosenthal is floating this out there. Thought I'd ask. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6376646/2025/05/23/pirates-paul-skenes-trade-mlb-notes/ Would you trade Clark, McGonigle, Bryce Rainer , Jaden Hamm and Owen Hall for Skenes? (It'd probably take that). Just curious on your thoughts. Skubal and Skenes, not a bad 1-2 punch. (I wouldn't do this deal but am curious what ya'll think). Quote
1776 Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Ken Rosenthal 😏 must be running out of interesting ideas to write about. No way I’d make that trade. Quote

They did that for Juan Soto and Skenes is going to cost more since they get five years of control (two of which will be less than 3 million per season). We did three for Miguel Cabrera (Andrew Miller and Maybin at the time were both top 5 prospects IIRC). Just playing a lil devils advocate. Quote
Tiger337 Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Rosenthal did not suggest that trade. AlaskanTigersfan did! Quote
theroundsquare Posted May 23 Posted May 23 So you're saying that Alaskan Tigers Fan is Ken Rosenthal? 1 Quote

Arlington Posted May 23 Posted May 23 I wouldn't trade Alaskan Tigers Fan for Rosenthal. I don't even know who brought that up. 1 Quote

Shinzaki Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Soto deal also included Josh Bell who was in the midst of an 800+ OPS season in DC at the time of the deal. Market for Skubal last year wasn't nearly as robust... Quote

Shinzaki Posted May 23 Posted May 23 (edited) Skubal is an established ace..Skenes hasn't even pitched 200 innings yet. Maybe he's going to continue to blow people away...or maybe he's Kerry Wood. I wouldn't trade that much positional talent for a pitcher unless he had a metal arm that guy in the Avengers movies Edited May 23 by Shinzaki 2 Quote
Sports_Freak Posted May 23 Posted May 23 All that losing to get these players? And then trade them for a guy who is one injury away from being out of baseball? I wouldn't do it and thankfully, neither would Scott Harris. 😆 1 Quote
AlaskanTigersFan Posted May 23 Author Posted May 23 Like I said, I wouldn't do the trade either. But that's what it'd cost to get him. Skubal an Skenes though would be a pretty good 1-2 punch, gotta admit it. 1 Quote
Tenacious D Posted May 23 Posted May 23 I would trade Max Clark, Jace Jung, Jaden Hamm and Owen Hall for Skenes. Quote
CMU97 Posted May 23 Posted May 23 This reminds me of the time the Tigers inquired about Alfanso Soriano down the stretch in 2006. The Nationals wanted a hefty package that included Cameron Maybin. Dave Dambroski said he wouldn't trade Maybin straight up for Soriano. I would not trade Max Clark straight up for Paul Skenes. 1 Quote
RandyMarsh Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Skenes very well maybe worth that much to some team or somebody but not to me he isn't and that's not a slight on him it's just the nature of pitchers and the way the game is trending. If we were completely loaded with great young up the middle players on our roster I'd probably consider it but with all due respect to Sweeney and Meadows I just don't think we are. 2 Quote
papalawrence Posted May 24 Posted May 24 A similar trade was posted on Facebook yesterday and was Clark, Mconigle and Liranzo for Skenes. Pitt wouldn't do that. Quote
Motor City Sonics Posted May 25 Posted May 25 If the Pirates already traded Skenes this year - then the league needs to force that owner out. It's an absolute shame that they have a GREAT fanbase and a beautiful stadium and he won't do anything to truly improve that team. We complained plenty about Chris Illitch not spending here too, but actually he has been spending, but not on player payroll, he has been spending a ton on player development and it's showing. That's what the Pirates need to do. You can build a really good team without breaking the bank, but you still have to invest on some level and that guy won't do it. It's embarrassing. They accidentally find their way into the postseason about once a decade and then immediately go back to being garbge. The Rays and now the Tigers are proving that you can build something that might last that way. We all root for Donny Kelly Baby, but he's stuck with a lemon. Which seems appropriate considering the team's colors. And taking down Clemente's number in right field. to replace it with an alcohol ad shows how tone-deaf that owner is. I couldn't imagine the Tigers taking down their player numbers on the CF wall for an ad. People would be furious. I think the Tigers know that. The Pirates ownership didn't. Quote
Tenacious D Posted May 26 Posted May 26 The reality is that acquiring Skenes would make the Tigers that much more formidable in a playoff. Running Skubal, Skenes and Mize out would be very strong. And Skenes protects for when Skubal likely leaves in free agency. Quote

He is a generational talent, with 4+ years of control. They would have to be blown away with the top package ever Quote
chasfh Posted May 26 Posted May 26 Rosenthal probably wrote that column because he’s offended by the idea that Skenes is being wasted in Pittsburgh. 1 Quote
RandyMarsh Posted May 26 Posted May 26 One thing Pitt doe deserve credit for in regards to Skenes is not making him toil away in the minors for a year or so in the name of "development" like some teams do just to manipulate service time. Of course if you plan on trading him before he gets expensive I suppose that doesn't really matter all that much. Quote
