Personally, I wouldn't be disappointed without too much trade action on our part. I get the disappointment in Montero since he isn't one of the big names (and has sucked for the past couple of years). But I have to believe that Harris and Fetter and Hinch see how his strengths could be exploited and his weaknesses can be minimized to benefit us. If they are right, then great for us. If they are wrong, then we haven't sacrificed much of our future and have some internal possibilites that could help. Bullpens pieces are so fickle that working with what we have could be just as good as mortgaging the future for a big name.

Agree.  M’s got Suárez by trading their 9th, 16th, 17th prospects.    We had the players to beat this deal without doing any harm to our very deep system.

I’m getting the sense Harris loves his prospects so much that he may never be a guy to be active on big deals at the deadline (especially for rentals).

Or, they didn’t value Suarez as much as you do.

Rental bats just don’t bring much.  Has any one brought back more than Michael Fulmer since the Cespedes trade?

And other than Chapman, very few, if any rental relievers have brought back a top 100.

Controlled pitching (and hitting) will bring top prospects.  Rentals hardly ever do.

Owens DFA is interesting. Almost like they have him included in a trade. Because he is on the IL, he cannot be outrighted. So if they don't find a taker for him today, they have to release him if he clears waivers.

True.  They definitely value defense and position flexibility far more than I do.

Suarez is not a complete player.  He’s absolutely all bat.   I don’t think there’s much debate over the value he’d have as a RH power bat in our lineup between Riley and Carp.   He’s leading baseball in RBI and 5th in HR.  Top 5 in SLG and Top 10 in OPS.

These are all areas we could use a big bump in the lineup and there are no injured players coming back that may be able to help.

I still expect them to acquire a good reliever like Bednar.  Their need there is too obvious to ignore and the chaos magic hasn't been working this year.  I don't believe Montero is going to be their only acquisition.

So, Steve Yzerman is consulting the Tigers, I see.

Perhaps so. It was said that he met up with Harris at the airport in his initial visit concerning the job, lol, or not.

That’s what he’s done so far this year. Each of the previous five seasons he’s been sub .800 ops, is prone to slumps and offers little else value wise if he’s not cranking bombs.

I agree. This need is too obvious. Everyone knows it.

Also, no excuse in saying 'Well everyone is looking for P.' Teams are trading RPs left and right - right now! Harris has to be able to - make a deal - or no amount of farm prospects are going to help if a GM/CEO (Greenberg too) cannot add by trading when a team needs it. Just look at all these transactions taking place - Lets go Scott!

there was an article a few years ago on ESPN about how trade deadline pickups energize any team/lockerrroom. when management and ownership say they are committed to winning that's good; players want to see that, not hear that though.

barring disaster, the AL Central looks under control, but some of their potential playoff opponents have made real improvements. switching Bednar for Enns, Jackson, Lee makes them objectively better. the players would all see that.

The Mariners are desperate to win it all. This deal makes sense for them. Think of all the great players who went through Seattle then moved on elsewhere, but they never won a World Series with them.

I can’t say I “wish them well“ because they are merely an obstacle of my own team’s success, just noise in comparison to music. but I understand why they did it.

You can't win a war by jumping on a grenade.

But you get a medal of honor for it.

Basically my defense of whatever Harris is doing (as if I knew) is that desperation is a bad tactic and a terrible strategy.   Being that way leads to chaos in your own organization and seldom leads to success.

Conversely, you have a good team and real weaknesses in the back end of your bullpen. You might not be as healthy next year and the AL might be not be as wide open. You have to give your team the best shot to do something special.

They want to build a sustainable product where they have playoff/competitive teams every year. This is one of those chances.

Yeah, being decisive is not the same as desperate.   I'm just saying that if we are going to be rolling the dice in October anyway...don't throw away a decade of baseball success on that dice roll.

I agree that October is mostly a dice roll, but I also think that good pitching becomes a little more important with all the days off, so you get a little advantage with top pitching rather than depth.  I also don't think acquiring a reliever or two needs to set them back years.
