One is how he'll spend time telling you how great a guy (particularly a pitcher) is or has been while he's being shelled. What is the point of that? It has pretty much zero relevance to the call of the game to tell me that last year the guy's ERA against lefties was only 2.3 or that his control is 'usually' great after he's walked two. It's basically apologizing for poor performance and that's not something I care to have the PBP guy doing. "He's having a bad day" is fine and leave it at that. People get old and soft. At least my kids accuse me of that. e.g:how I treat my grandchildren compared to how I treated them. Quote

But aren't you supposed to treat your grandkids that way. I thought it was part of the jib description. (But then, my grandson is 600 plus miles away) Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted April 8 Posted April 8 I liked Rod & Mario. I don't care that they weren't buddies. I don't care that one guy shoved a chair at the other and then shoved him. That happens. I've been in media for 40 years and there are times when you work with people that you don't click with, but the work is still good. I knew one guy who literally body slammed another (after he gave his real cell phone number out on the air). They both got suspended a week. When they came back to work they were fine with each other. They had their blow up and it was over. Quote
Tiger337 Posted April 8 Posted April 8 I liked Allen so much, I used to switch the White Sox feed every time they played them. Quote

On a few occasions when he worked with someone else the difference was obvious, he was much more personable and engaged with the other person in the booth and it was a better broadcast. Rod could do color, but Mario was right about that too - too often he hadn't done any homework and he would go whole games adding nothing but his cutesy signature lines. Tiger's have only themselves to blame, they should have broken them up years before it fell apart. Sure you don't have to like someone to work with them, but when it reaches where one detests the other to the point he can't be his best self professionally it's no good to keep forcing it. The interlude with Shep was regrettable, but they've landed on their feet with Benetti, for as long as he stays. Edited April 8 by gehringer_2 1 Quote
Sports_Freak Posted April 9 Posted April 9 Say whatever you want when comparing Jason and whoever compared to Rod and Mario but it's a fact that when Rod and Mario were doing the games, you didn't have to watch to know what was going on. Many times, I'm doing something around the house and I have no idea what's happening without stopping and looking at the screen. With these guys in the booth now, the game comes second to whatever nonsense they're babbling about. A pitcher is pitching the ball and the announcers are busy talking to Danilla about some greasy hamburger she's stuff her face with. Who cares?? Fans are not watching the game to giggle like a 3 year old, it's serious business with a game going on. Go national, Jason. Bring DD into the TV booth and actually talk about the game that's going on. <rant over> Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted July 2 Posted July 2 I know you get frustated with some of the non-game babbel, but I've done sports radio and there is a ton of repetition and talking about silly stuff is a relief from repeating baseball cliches all night. The whole idea on the sports station WTKA is that you had to almost do the same show every 90 minutes over again - but with different callers and some callers would take you in a different direction, but to fill time when the action is slow is not an easy thing to do without ruffling feathers somewhere with someone. I don't mind when Jason and Andy get on the Silly Train, but I think they stay on it for too many stops sometimes. The young guys (guys not named Harwell and Scully) think there constantly needs to be sound coming out of their mouths. Ernie and Vin would pause - and frquently, but that style is LOOONG GONE. I think Dickerson provides a good transition from the older, folksy way and the new, fill your ears with sound way. He navigates that really well, but needs to give out the score more often. 1 Quote
CMRivdogs Posted July 2 Posted July 2 Growing up as a Pirate fan with Bob Prince doing play by play was a trip. Unlike guys like Ernie, Prince had his own lingo and phrases. There were times he'd get into a story about something or another and you'd "And we were having dinner, single to right by Groat....and so and so said...." I can handle Benetti just fine and I enjoy most of his thoughts that come out of left field. It's part of the culture he grew up in and I appreciate it. Straight play by play on the TV, where you can see what's happening, and good Lord there are enough replays to catch up, is a bit like listening to someone describing paint drying Quote
oblong Posted July 2 Posted July 2 The pitch clock and pace of game changes also changes their cadence so I am not sure we can compare the eras anymore. There’s less downtime. The thing I like with Benetti is that it’s not forced. I don’t believe he has index cards on what to bring up. It’s just a natural conversational style he has. My mind works the same way. So many times during the day something happens where I think of a movie or tv show or song. I’m not saying I could do his job or anything like that but I understand it. It’s like Chris Farley… “you remember that time when Bruce Willis in Die Hard….” Quote
holygoat Posted July 2 Posted July 2 Which eras, though? If you're comparing Benetti to Mario and Rod, sure, but not so much to the guys we old-timers grew up with when the game was organically faster. Quote

You listen to some of these real old timey games on YouTube, like from the 50s and 40s, and a lot of the time it was all dead air in between pitches. Also, seems like there were fewer pitches per plate appearances, another thing that would speed up the game. Edited July 2 by chasfh Quote
Tenacious D Posted July 2 Posted July 2 (edited) Dickerson continues to be the gold standard—balances sharing important game information while making it interesting. By comparison, Benetti over indexes on entertainment value while Greg Gania is incredibly bland. I still think the best pairings take place when you separate Jason and Andy and pair them with the Dan’s. Bobby Scales is solid, too. And I prefer Johnny Kane to Daniella Bruce. I’m thinking simply pitch clock vs non pitch clock and more about radio instead of TV. TV can provide dead air since we can see it. Funny enough this afternoon I had it on and my wife told me to turn it up. It was up. They just weren’t saying anything for a bit. Quote
