Yeah but back in those days, nobody kept track of pitch counts. But people still knew it was too many pitches. Remember Edwin Jackson throwing a no hitter for, I think, Arizona? He threw 150 pitches or something and then was hurt.

There was a game in the Mid 70s where Nolan Ryan went 13 innings and threw 220 some pitches.  He  was out done by his opponent, Luis Tiant, who went. 14 innings. I think Boston won that game. Both pitchers made their next start on regular (3 days) rest.

Dusty Baker destroyed Mark Prior's and Kerry Wood's careers.  Some games those guys were throwing over 130 pitches a game at 22 and 23 years of age.  Those two guys had the talent to be potential HOFers

Dusty ruining those guy's careers is right up there with Billy Martin  destroying his young starters on the A's and the most egregious destruction of a young pitcher, Davey Johnson, pitching Gooden almost 750 mlb innings by time he was 21.  Johnson doesn't get nearly enough hate for what he did to Gooden when he was so young.

Tarik Skubal has 699 career mlb innings and I would bet he has never thrown anywhere near 120 pitches a game.

Look at Mickey Lolich in the '68 World Series. 3 complete games? Will there even be a pitcher with 3 complete games all season?

There will probably never be another guy like Nolan Ryan ever.  I guess, Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens were guys that could throw super hard for a long career and never were injured.  And even though they were both much better pitchers than Ryan, they didn't have the freak arm that Ryan did.

It might come down to just luck or training habits.  I really don't know.  Verlander until he was about 36 or 37 was extremely durable.  If I was a young pitcher, I wouldn't want to pitch a bunch of innings either, hoping my arm would last until I could get a second contract.  And teams don't want their guys getting injured, but what incentive do the Pirates have to protect Skenes?  There is a 0% chance he stays with the Pirates once he becomes a FA.  If they are in the playoffs, why wouldn't you pitch him as much as possible?

Bye Hernandez!

Somebody has to come off the 40 to for Melton tomorrow.  I think Hernandez is a good candidate but he really hasn't been any worse than a few other Detroit pitchers.  This team has been hard to watch during this bad stretch of games.

I think we need to prioritize a SP at the deadline. Very concerned with Mize and Flaherty.  One could go to the pen if they can’t straighten things out.

Pirates are going to score if they decide to move Keller and Bednar.  Both are exactly what we need.

Cleveland wins. They’ve made up 6 games on the Tigers in the past 11 games. The division lead is down into single digits, at 9 games. Tigers are tied with the Jays for the AL lead.

This as an Avila/Gardy type of performance. Well below the standard we have seen all season. The good players on this team need to figure it out.

Colt Keith is worthless.  He has no power, usually hits weak fly balls or ground outs and might be the worst fielder in the league.  Definitely need an upgrade at DH.

Keller doesn't move the needle for me AT ALL. Don't see how he's any better than Mize / Olson / Flaherty.

As I've been saying, we need a legit #2. Otherwise, we're just throwing away prospects for lateral moves.

I agree.  There's only one Pirate pitcher I would like to see in Detroit and he is not going on the block.  I think Harris is smart enough not to spend anything on Keller or Bednar.

I’m missing the entirety of this game tomorrow as it’s my day to walk with my pal along the Boise River. Then I’m eating a gluttonous meal of exquisite Vietnamese food, and consuming mass quantities of fluids to wash it down. By the time it’s over this game will have finished.

I wish all of us well and all the luck we haven’t experienced for too long.
