if the Tigers end up with a playoff spot... do they even celebrate?  I bet not.

If they subsequently win a series they can celebrate.

They'll get swept by the Guardians and then sweep Boston

They will celebrate twice as hard for overcoming such a horrific stretch that everyone was convinced would doom them.

If somehow they win the division, they will.  But if they keep losing and end up a WC team this weekend in Boston because others lost... I don't think they will.   But who knows... I'm sure I'll be wrong again.

I'm sure they'll celebrate, although it probably wouldn't be with the wild abandon of the 2024 celebration.

Living in Cleveland I watch Guardians games and this is not a good team. I honestly do not understand how they have gone on this run.

From my limited observations of Cleveland, they’re not beating themselves. The Tigers literally self imploded last night.
btw, I’m really hoping the Reds get in.

Glass half full:

The Tigers now sit in the final WC spot, a game up on Houston with the tie breaker. They're going to make the playoffs and turn this around. Greene's home run signaled his turn around. It's going to happen!

That's been the case in several games this last stretch. A bunch of little things. Bloop here, error there. Last night was a major meltdown.

It's almost like I'm watching my OOTP Go team implode on me

Their pitching has been very good the last month.

Celebrate on the field, on the same scale as you would after a big walkoff win. But would be ridiculous to have a clubhouse celebration. In fact I wouldn't have a clubhouse celebration for the division unless it was clinched Saturday, since if on Sunday there'd be a game the next day.

I am trying to be philosophical about it.  You play 162.  During that time you have hot stretches and cold stretches.  Some come in May or June or July or the last 2 weeks of September.

They had a 1-12 stretch in July and a 1-10 stretch in September. The rest of the season they had the best record, or close to it, in MLB. As recently as September 11 the Tigers had the best record in the American League. It's pretty remarkable.

What did they do when they lost the division, but made the playoffs in 2006?  I know they had a big celebration after the first round win and brought it straight to the fans.  I don't remember what they did after clinching a playoff spot.

my recollection is nothing when the season ended.  i was at that last regular season game that year (per my habit) and it went from a party atmosphere when they were winning to a funeral when the Royals went ahead.  A week before, though, when the Tigers clinched the playoff spot, they had a big celebration in KC

They clinched the playoff spot in KC and celebrated. It was a Sunday.  It was the first time in the playoffs in 19 years.  Then they came home and lost the final 5 in a 6 game home stand to finish a game out of first.   In that scenario it’s backwards from today. They lost the division after winning a playoff spot.  But the division lead then wasn’t as large.

Next to last Sunday of the year they clinched at least a playoff spot while the division was still in play. I remember Andrew Miller striking out a Royal for the final out, on the road, and everyone from the Tigers' dugout streaming onto the field. Goggles in the clubhouse too. Attached is Mario Impemba's call of the final out. Video of it is from 16:07 to 16:37 of this YT clip.

Right before they came back from commercial before the final half inning they showed the final out in ‘87 against Toronto. I actually got choked up.  I was in high school. I started to think about how I was now (in 2006) married with 2 kids and a job and a house…. 19 years can be a small amount of years, like 2006 to now feels, or pretty much a lifetime, as 87 to 06 felt to me then.

OK, now I remember.  I was so happy they made the playoffs that I wasn't really upset about them losing the division title.  Yeah, that's a different situation from this year.

Tigers’ magic number for the division remains at 6 but Cleveland is in pole position with a magic number of 3.

But Houston has lost so the Tigers’ magic number for a wildcard spot is down to 3. Playoff fever …catch it!
