What has he really done for the Tiger roster? You can point to these supposedly future hall of famers in AA, but the core of the team are Avila players. Greene, Tork, Skubal, Mize...even Meadows, Baez, Dingler, Keith, Rogers, Olson, and Jobe. Harris has Sweeney, Maeda, Cobb, Vierling, Torres, Canha, and Flaherty. Torres has been great but everyone knew he would be. Flaherty is a roller coaster. Vierling is injured all the time. Sweeney has no business being in the majors. Cobb and Maeda...nothing to see here. The relief pitchers are mostly his but they are constantly being turned over and are kind of a crap shoot anyway. Harris is weak making trades. It's like he's afraid any prospect he may trade will turn into a really good player. And any player worth trading for usually comes with a big salary. And then there's his free agent signings. Yes, Torres has been good. But was it a case of his talents being offered to the Tigers or Harris actually going after him? Seeing that 2nd base hadn't a been a need and the signing was a surprise, I would say Torres fell into his lap. Cobb at $15 million? He could have had Matthew Boyd for the same money per season. Harris has been really good rebuilding an empty minor league system. But there's more to being a successful GM than just that. He had an opportunity to have a deep playoff run, this season and it looks like he's failed. He'll be kept around because the Tigers are making the owner a lot of money. And that's what determines if a business is successful or not. Quote

Typical politician. Make excuses for your failure, lie and then just blame other people. And use distraction to....LOOK...a CAT!!! I think he was referring to minor league games. 😉 1 Quote
tiger2022 Posted September 20 Posted September 20 And Torkelson and Greene will leave Detroit via free agency most likely after 2028. They have 3 more years of their 2 big hitters. Skubal amd Mize have 1 more year and they are gone. Clark and McGonigle, the 2 guys everyone has already annointed as hall of famers probably won't be regulars until 2027 or later. The top 2 starters will be gone (I'm not a huge Mize fan but he's a middle rotation guy) and there will only be 2 years of those prospects with Greene/Tork. Let's be honest, Ilitch won't offer those guys a competitive contract. They'll just be starting over and hoping that Jobe, Melton, and Olson can be top of the rotation guys. And one or both of Clark and McGonigle might be busts. Teams that won't spend money via free agency can't afford to miss on virtually any of their top draft picks. And having a solid bullpen is really important but it's just kind of the luck of the draw. Quote
Tiger337 Posted September 20 Posted September 20 The end of this season reminds me of 2009. I hope the Guardians don't take Tork out for drinks this week. Quote
Kacie Posted September 20 Posted September 20 It takes 10 years for a rebuild. Fans need to be patient. No point in just making the playoffs. Some great talent in the minors. No sense in making trades and giving away a late round pick for an established player that would help us make the playoffs. (mocking Yzerman for the non hockey Tiger fans) Quote
SoCalTiger Posted September 20 Posted September 20 It's too early to lament where we are or what to do this off season. We have a game tomorrow as the first place team in the Central division. 2 Quote

Then to 87 in 2025 if they manage to go 2-5 the rest of the way. What more can you ask for!" 1 Quote

Look at Baltimore last season, kicking butt but refusing to trade any of their prospects for much needed pitching. They limped into the playoffs and were quickly eliminated. And this season? Last place and not even a .500 team. You’re looking for a point where there isn’t even one. We are not the Orioles. Quote

He inherited Skubal, Mize, Olson, Jobe, Greene, Torkelson, Meadows, Keith, Rogers, Dingler...not really that big of a mess. Maybe Avila had terrible organizational skills but the talent that made the playoffs last year and the talent that is close this year was what Harris inherited. 1 Quote

Harris figured we were a shoo in for the playoffs, fate had other ideas. Quote

If this was something like the 2014 team, a team that was at the end of the line, I’d be in despair for this franchise right now. But I’m not. Even if I am disappointed by what happens this season, I am still excited to be a fan of this franchise—that is assuming they don’t do anything stupid like fire Harris and Hinch, blow up the science departments, and start the whole damn thing all over in a new direction. 😉 I think any year you are in first place with the best pitcher in baseball is a year when you really want to try to win. I agree with your point that they will likely have more opportunities to win over the next several years. Quote

I believe they care a lot. Competitive people (and pro athletes are some of the most competitive people in the world) want to win and they get upset when they don't. If they somehow care less than us, then maybe there is something wrong with us. 😃 Quote

But I still remember the fan who called up the Superdome in New Orleans and threatened to blow the stadium up if the Saints didn't roll over in a playoff game against the Lions. That guy might have cared more than the Lions players. Edited September 20 by tiger2022 Quote

The MLB is not the NBA. The NBA's regular season doesn't matter because so many teams make the playoffs. What matters is being in peak shape for the playoffs. They are not going to hurt their chances of winning games that matter by getting injured in games that don't matter. That's going to happen in baseball soon too, but right now you still have to be good to make the MLB playoffs. Quote
Tigerbomb13 Posted September 20 Posted September 20 This is a collapse of epic proportions. I’m not even mad anymore Quote
lordstanley Posted September 21 Posted September 21 Guardians take 2-0 lead. One guess as to who drove in the 2 runs. Quote
papalawrence Posted September 21 Posted September 21 Cleveland now up 6-0. Lead will be 1. The Tigers just dropped 5.5 games in the standings to Cleveland in 5 games. I wonder if that's ever happened before? Quote
