If they fall out of the playoffs, Hinch needs to go.  This team hasn’t shown up to play in 6 weeks aside from two games against the Yankees.  Less and less I think last year was about Hinch and more that it was just us using a bunch of pitchers that other teams didn’t have a chance to scout

It may not have mattered. Cept with a spark or just knowing they tried. An extra bat and arm still wouldn't be enough. They needed a lot more.

After tonight, the Guardians will be a game back amd Bosox and Astros are only 0.5 games behind...the two teams they will be going after the final wildcard spots.

It doesn't look good.

I think Hinch has gotten as much out of this team the past few years as any manager could,  He's not the problem.

Harris isn’t going anywhere either, and Dave Dombrowski is still otherwise gainfully employed.

Harris has done an amazing job getting this franchise into a position to be a perennial contender, and well beyond just getting a few decent prospects in the farm system now. It’s really that version of the Tigers he has been building towards, and that version is not here yet, so they’re not about to fire everyone, blow up the franchise, and start over now.

This version was never meant to be the pennant or bust team. This version, last year and this, was always playing with house money. Many if not most of these guys won’t even be here in three years.

Don't know why it matters so much.  It makes virtually no impact in my life if the Tigers make the playoffs or not.   Not like I get rich if they win or go broke if they lose.

YMMV, but me, I am getting mentally prepared to miss the playoffs. I suspect they will have me ganging on my my fingernails next Sunday when it can still go either way, but for my own mental earth, I need to rip the band-aid off now.

The comeback with the 2 out home run in the 9th inning should have been an emotional victory against Cleveland too. But this team has had a slow moving collapse. It's like watching a very slow train crash. We all see and feel it coming but there's nothing to do to stop it. Just go into winter and deal with the obvious needs. The same needs we had at the trade deadline. We need pitching and more pitching and then even more pitching. Quality over quantity. No 40 year olds, pitchers coming off of injuries or bad team rejects. And I'll repeat.....having a strong minor league system should allow a team to trade a few of those prospects to fill the major league teams roster with needed talent. It's a pretty simple philosophy.

Jung has 17 HRs in AAA.  The problem is Detroit doesn't play against AAA teams.  

...and like Colt Keith and Justin Malloy, he isn't really sure what a baseball glove is used for.

This is frustrating. When I felt this frustrated at the age of five I would retire to my sandbox and focus my magnifying glass on small red ants until a column of smoke arose and I imagined I was attacking Rommel‘s tanks in North Africa.

I was a part of the post war generation and World War II was an active memory. I lived in a neighborhood filled with fathers who had grizzly trophies from the war.

One of my neighbors had black and white photographs from when his father liberated Buchenwald. pretty horrifying. So stuff like this wasn’t quite as twisted as it actually sounds. It was the background noise of life as a child in the 50s.

After a while, I realized how lame and pointless this was and stopped doing it  But I almost wish I had a sandbox right now.

And really, this is the silver lining in this whole debacle. If this was something like the 2014 team, a team that was at the end of the line, I’d be in despair for this franchise right now. But I’m not. Even if I am disappointed by what happens this season, I am still excited to be a fan of this franchise—that is assuming they don’t do anything stupid like fire Harris and Hinch, blow up the science departments, and start the whole damn thing all over in a new direction. 😉

Scott Harris actually said we have prospects in the minors who are going to help us win games...this season. Typical politician. Make excuses for your failure, lie and then just blame other people. And use distraction to....LOOK...a CAT!!!

You're missing the point. A collapse like this could very well have lasting implications. Look at Baltimore last season, kicking butt but refusing to trade any of their prospects for much needed pitching. They limped into the playoffs and were quickly eliminated. And this season? Last place and not even a .500 team.

I am luke warm on Harris.  He got lucky that the guys Avila drafted have turned out to be serviceable mlbers.  

What has he really done for the Tiger roster?  You can point to these supposedly future hall of famers in AA, but the core of the team are Avila players.  Greene, Tork, Skubal, Mize...even Meadows, Baez, Dingler, Keith, Rogers, Olson, and Jobe.

Harris has Sweeney, Maeda, Cobb, Vierling, Torres, Canha, and Flaherty.  Torres has been great but everyone knew he would be.  Flaherty is a roller coaster.  Vierling is injured all the time.  Sweeney has no business being in the majors.  Cobb and Maeda...nothing to see here.

The relief pitchers are mostly his but they are constantly being turned over and are kind of a crap shoot anyway.

I think criticism of Harris being too cautious could be more defensible than criticism of Hinch.  I wished that they pushed harder during the off-season and the deadline, but I acknowledge that I don't know what or who they would have had to give up.  The Tigers as a whole are pretty much what I thought they'd be - a team with a chance to contend but not dominant  The move I really wanted to see was Bregman  .  Bregman was a perfect fit and I think he would have made a big difference.  I think they came close to getting him, but we'll never know.
