IdahoBert Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Bill Mazeroski died. He’s noted for his game 7 1960 World Series 9th inning walk off homer against the New York Yankees. I had both of these baseball cards when I was eight years old. But like my innocent youthfulness, they have also departed. I had already become a Tiger’s fan by the time these cards came into my possession in 1961. I knew the Yankees were the main enemy because they were always ahead of the Tigers in the standings in 1961. 1 Quote

Maz was an integral member of that Pirates team that broke the 33 year drought for the Pirates. To an eight year old kid from Western Pa (somewhere between McKeesport and Irwin) Maz was probably my favorite player. edit Just wanted to add my with had a conference in Pittsburgh in 2024, while she had meetings I took a pilgrimage to the old Forbes Field site. It's part of the Pitt Law school, I believe, or at least home plate is implanted there. Left Field wall is nearby, Edited February 21 by CMRivdogs 2 Quote

My brother-in-law who died at age 92 last year grew up in Shenandoah Pennsylvania and was a high school baseball pitcher to whom the Pittsburgh Pirates offered a contract right out of high school and I’m assuming he would’ve started in a class D league had he accepted. He declined the offer because he was smart, good at math and science, and he instead joined the US Air Force during the Korean War becoming an electronics engineer. He did this to get the G.I. bill so he could go to college and ended up working for IBM and writing code and stuff all the rest of his working life. He was an astute baseball fan, and when I went to games with him, his focus was so intense you were eveloped in his bubble of enthusiasm and perspicacity. 2 Quote
guy incognito Posted February 21 Posted February 21 I feel kind of sheepish admitting this, but as someone who wasn’t around for his playing days my first association with Maz is him being the guy who hit into the triple play that Oscar missed while Felix had him on the phone about franks and beans. (”Take your frankfurters and… !”) Quote

IdahoBert Posted Wednesday at 10:34 PM Posted Wednesday at 10:34 PM Nick Castellanos is playing first base today in the February 25 game in Peoria in cactus league competition with the Padres vs. the Angels. Apparently the Padres and the Mariners share the same ballpark. A small scattered crowd is there. Pretty much no one in the stands and almost no one on the berm. And as before in a previous game I checked out in this ballpark, the camera work is strictly minor league. Nick did somehow drive a run and score a run although with no hits but I’m too lazy to look up why. Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted 23 hours ago Author Posted 23 hours ago So Giancarlo Stanton says he can't open a bottle or a bag of chips. Dude, just retire. Do the Yankees one solid and let them take the insurance money. You're done. I usually don't care about the Yankees, but this guy's just ripping them off at this point. Quote

chasfh Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago There is no reason a player should be guilted into taking pity on a major league team and doing them a "solid" by retiring to save them a little money. Owning a franchise in the only legally-protected monopoly in America is as risk-free a venture as there is on this entire planet. I see no reason every last risk factor must be removed from the game just to protect those poor hedge fund owners and private equity firms who own the teams. They want to own a big league ball club and bask in glory among their peers at Bilderberg and Davos and epstein islands while raking in even more billions from them? Fine, then let them have to continue paying players while they are injured. **** those guys. 1 1 Quote
