Obviously those players don't play The Right Way™.

Just because every player would say on the record that they “should” know the game situation without looking at the scoreboard doesn’t change the reality that nearly every one of those players in practice is constantly looking at the scoreboard, as evidenced by a dozen players all thinking the third out had been made by the CF yesterday.

You cannot possibly be suggesting that players are expected to not reference any other data source (scoreboard, teammate, coach, etc.) other than their own recollection to know the count, score, and number of outs at all times. That’s not a question, by the way. My point is where does one draw the line as to when a player should stop consulting those sources and rely on their gut.

I’ll report back with my findings as soon as you report back with evidence of the COPA scoreboard having the balls and strikes wrong.

OK, I will dig too. 😂

In a modern ballparks the scoreboards are video games. Maybe at Fenway there is one spot you can look at and know what you are going to see, but in most any other park there is nowhere a player could glance up and know for sure he wouldn't get a view of a sleep number bed ad instead of the score and counts. When a fielder makes an out and signals to his mates, does he point up the scoreboard to tell his mates to look at how many outs there are? And finally, there is one guy on the field who is the only one whose opinion matters, and he signals how many outs there are from behind home plate at the beginning of every AB in case anyone is interested.

Man I wish I had played rec ball against guys who didn't know how many outs there were without a scoreboard! :classic_laugh:

In any case to go back the original situation - I've yet to see the video in enough context to see everything that happened in order, but didn't Toronto leave the field after they did make a third out a 1st?  I'm not sure the statement that "nobody" knew how many outs there were holds. The Boston runners clearly  didn't know, but the Toronto players executed a third out and then left the field. The problem was they executed the wrong out for what they wanted. The Umps said they don't get a do-over on taking the out at 1st instead of 3rd because they had already ended the inning.

Watch the play. Actually, see if you can find a clip with the camera angle high above home plate that shows all of the fielders. You will see them all (including the first and third baseman) walking slowly toward their dugout with ball still in the air anticipating the third out as the runners circle the bases. The CF then lobs the ball back in to second (not third or first to double off the obviously stupid baserunners that both forgot how many outs there were based on their rock solid memory of all of the plays from that inning). Only after the ball was lobbed in to second base did they eventually throw the ball over to Vlad. I couldn’t say at what point t they realized that the ball that was caught wasn’t actually the third out. Maybe an umpire said something as they were leaving the field and they were like “oh, right, well I guess we can just get third out here at first base”.

I don’t know when it is that players start relying on the information provided to them on the scoreboards. But I don’t think comparing it to rec league is a valid comparison, because no one is saying it’s not possible to keep track when someone else is not doing it correctly you. You’re right, a lot of times the information is obscured. But that doesn’t mean it is not relied on. They would be almost foolish not to, given that is correct far more often than player recollection alone.

I don’t disagree that players “should” be able to keep track without it (in most cases).

If you are going to insist that they don’t actually rely on it, I’m not going to be able to convince you otherwise. But then I feel like we will need to start investigating whatever mind control powers they have at the Rogers centre that would lead that many players to all have the wrong recollection of seemingly simple facts.

On MLB tonight on the radio, one of the former players was saying he always looked at the scoreboard for that information.

The Closecall Sports Video Today pointed out scoreboard operators are under the gun to update the ABS zone by the first pitch of an at bat, so they are going to be slow to correct mistakes as a result.

One curious thing I thought I heard was that 2 outs was *announced* in the ballpark. Can't say I ever remember being in the ballpark in det or MN ever hearing any kind of play-by-play coverage or game update like that from the PA. In Det we've never even had scorer's decisions over the PA.  The umps are miked for replay/challenge but that's it. That definitely would have added to the confusion.I think an announcement would  carry more credence.

In last night's Tiger game, I was coming back from a beer run when they scored he fifth run.  I heard the commotion but didn't see it.  Sat down, saw the scoreboard still showing 4, figured I didn't get it right.  Then the 6th run scored and they changed it to 5.... then eventually 6.  That took about 30 seconds.

"Skenes fell to 3-4 in his last nine starts and has a 5.79 ERA over that stretch. His prolonged struggles have been marked by an uncharacteristic dip in velocity; Skenes' average fastball velocity this season is 96.8 mph, down from 98.1 mph last season and 98.8 mph in 2024."

I need a haircut. Livvy might be single soon.

I saw that SF was awarded an upcoming ASG.  So I went to B-R to see what cities have hosted the last 30 years or so.... they just list the stadium name, not the city.  Fine, for hte most part, but with the turnover of corporate names there were some I didn't immediately recognize.  I used their "contact us" feature to make a suggestion they add the city/team next to stadium names on their displays.  Am I dumb for doing that?  Sorry, I forgot what Truist Park was and don't remember what new stadium replaced another new stadium or who was merged into what... I still call it Pac Bell

I call it Candlestick Park!  Once they started using park names as advertisements, I quickly lost track.

I could kid you about how this sounds old manish, but, yes, I agree with what you’re going after by contacting them.

I have a concern about a yield vs right of way merging of two entrances into another entrance onto a highway around me.  The highway is going to be expanded from 2 to 3 lanes.  The department of transportation was taking concerns and questions from the public.  So I addressed my concern with the current structure of which direction yields and which direction has right of way.  Not get too deep into it, but the current yield traffic driver literally has to look over its right shoulder and behind for traffic while the right of way curves and angles such that it sees the traffic it merges with.  It’s baffling why it’s set up the way it is.
