Other than the Yankees, the rest of the schedule before the deadline looks manageable.

Careful.  We said that about the May schedule and look how that turned out.

True. But that was with a different roster, in many respects.

The big question is can Lee (or someone) carry Gleyber's jock. They won 7 of 11 with Gleyber back in the line-up and now he's out again. They can't go back to a batting order that's only 5 or 6 deep and keep it up.

Small sample size, but Lee is OPSing .885 since he came back up.  So there’s something there

The biggest difference is they have a strong starting pitcher going every day.

Which, in theory, should ease up on use or overuse of a suboptimal bullpen.

Hao-Yu Lee is slashing 346/.346/.538 for June in 26 plate appearances across nine game. Just sayin'.

Yes, this is an important point. In my view it’s a big difference if you are replacing guys with young players that have sort of upside. Replacing Torres with Lee is a good example of a move that can pay off long term. He can copay isn’t likely to keep it up but at least there is some ceiling.

Those may lineups with Short, Wenceel, Jones, Workman, AND Lee were just brutal.

I do think Jones may be on borrowed time at this point, especially if Lee continues to hit enough. Cruz is still probably first to go, though. But that’s a decision for another day when somebody returns from injury. It’s hard to keep track of which hitters are out. Meadows, Javy, Gleyber, Wenceel?

It easy to say when we are winning, but I like our lineup a lot more with guys playing their actual positions and simply being competent with the bat. That can go a long when you get all star caliber play from guys like Kevin and Dingler and Riley, and baseline level play from carpenter and Keith and maybe torkelson.

The more I read about it, the more I’m thinking Jones might stick around a lot longer than many fans would like. His contact metrics are in the top quarter of the league, and even though he does strike out too much, his xwOBA is so much higher than his wOBA that it could be argued he’s a useful piece who’s been really unlucky, rather than merely flat out awful. Plus, they really like him in the clubhouse, which as a secondary metric is useful in its own right.

I have not heard anything about Wenceel since the accident other than he hasn’t lost his vision, but that he’s still in Houston not cleared to travel. Normally I might say that’s not a good sign, but then, this front office is famously tight-lipped about literally everything, so that part probably means nothing. I would be surprised if he went between the lines for us again this year.

I’m not counting on Javy or Parker for anything this year beyond September cameos, if that. I think Trei is about to leave the diner any day now.

I do believe Gleyber will be back and it’s 50-50 that we’ll get some positive on-field contribution from him, but he is aging rapidly and I’d be shocked to see the Tigers bring him back in a major role for ‘27.

I read that Wenceel was back in Detroit. But yeah, when there are comments like “not expected to have long term damage to vision” that kind of implies that he’s got at least some substantial damage to his vision currently.

Gleyber missed a month with his last lat strain so it seems likely that he will be on a similar timeline.

I think we will roll with the present roster until either of those guys comes back, but that seems like 3-4 weeks away at the earliest. I do not see them making a 40-man move to call up a guy like Ben Malgieri.

I do think there is a chance that one of the Maxes catches fire with the bat over the next few weeks and that there are some real considerations to making a call-up, but I do not think it’s a high chance. And I think as we get further into July it also increases the chance that we don’t see either until the magical mid-August date that preserves rookie status next season even if they are starting to force the issue.

So yeah, until such time as two hitters need to be added back to the roster, I think Jones remains. But it gets more dicey if one comes back and Jones remains ice cold.

If we do end up selling, the team is going to be under pressure to bring up the future at some point, so barring utter collapse on their parts, I think we'll see the Maxes at the minimum (to your point, probably not before mid-August, unless they do it sooner and simply throttle PT). And for people who are concerned with a 101 wRC+ for the one and a 107 for the other at the moment, remember that Hao-Yu Lee came up here sporting a 99 wRC+ in Toledo, and he seems to be finding his footing with more regular playing time.

If you look at Clark’s rolling wOBA graph on PS, he’s been on a pretty significant upswing since he bottomed out following his hot start. He’s done the “start hot, struggle, figure it out” cycle now that you often hear management point to as a pre-requisite for a call-up.

Max A is doing fine but a step behind Max C.

Putting aside all of the roster spot and service time benefit cynicism, we are approaching the sweet spot of MLB need and prospect success where I could see a call-up as soon as this weekend and as late as mid-August.

But I think the reality is that Scott Harris loves to maintain his surplus roster benefits so the mid August call feels like a pretty strong lock.

That didn't take long! 🙂

In honor of my late father's birthday I choose today to lay out my scenario for the rest of this season.

Buckle up.

The Tigers tread water between now and deadline day.  Harris decides to freak Freak out and make a big deal.   Trades Skubal to the Dodgers for Sheehan, DePaula & Sirota.   Trades Torres & Flaherty to the Padres for Schoolcraft.

...and just like that the boys catch fire.   Valdez, Melton,  & Mize are joined by a healthy Verlander and Jobe keeping the rotation viable. Sheehan & Schoolcraft bolster the 'pen  The Maxs are called up from Toledo to stabilize the lineup, and like magic for the 2nd time in 3 years a late hot streak puts the Tigers in the post season.

The question is:  Can they make the WS to face  Skubal?

If they do, at least we know via one of the sim games Skubal did in rehab that Jahmai Jones can homer off of him.

I doubt Jones would still be around in my have your cake scenario......

Seems highly correlated with payroll -- the higher the payroll, the better the reputation among payees and putative payees.  Go figure.

Yes, that's part of it, and there's more. Players quoted in the story also seem big on teams that treat the wives and "kiddos" well; they value organizations that know how to make a player better when he's struggling; and teams that have good amenities in the clubhouse.

To your point, I'm pretty sure this is all related to salaries: if a team spends the money on player salaries, they will probably also spend the money on players' families, equipment, analytics, clubhouse, etc.

The Twins actually got a vote?  lol from who?

Byron Buxton?

Zero votes: White Sox, Rays, Orioles, Rockies, Athletics, and ... Cardinals!

That last one, I am a little surprised by. That ownership and management team must have really gone into the ****ter.
