Given Mize's injury history, the return may not be worth it.

They can make a qualifying offer after the season and may be end up with a comp pick.

This is the route to go.

He won't command a trade package (IMO) that is better than the comp pick.

So, he won't be traded (IMO).

Make him the QO in the offseason. If he accepts the QO, we have a starter earmarked for 2026.

Maybe he signs a short-term hometown discount contract?

If he doesn't and leaves as a free agent... a WAG says he gets at least 3 years / $50 mill, probably a little bit more than that but I don't think a whole lot. I think he'll struggle to get the 3 years/ $50 mill on the open market, but that's just me.

If he gets it... we get a post-1st round pick and I would certainly be pleased with that.

Again, I don't think it will be worth it to trade him because I'm just guessing... the offers for him will be underwhelming.

I agree.  I think we could at best get a Flaherty type package from 2 yrs ago, but to me, with 24% odds, the potential comp pick and him in the rotation the rest of the year is worth keeping him.

Even trading Skubal, if they lose Mize, they would have 4 picks before the 2nd round.  (Both the players and owners proposals supposedly leave this years free agency compensation picks the same as the current cba).  That would give the Tigers close to a record bonus pool for the draft.  (Another caveat, if draft picks are allowed to be traded next year, it would just add to the options)

I hope they resign Mize, but the option of getting a comp pick for him is still a good alternative.

I "think" he has to get at least 50 million in order for us to get a pick and his injury history makes me hesitant to resign him for the money he will ask/obtain. So I trade him.

Mize is getting $50+ million if he makes it to free agency.

Mize's history injury also substantially reduces the return we can get for him in trade.

To the point the return is less than a comp pick ?

To the point that he won’t bring much more than a comp pick.

With still 24% odds, the value of still having around 200x better odds than we did in 2024 (and probably 10-20x better odds than Cleveland last year).  Keeping him has more value to me than the potentially slight upgrade over a comp pick.  And I also think they have a reasonable likelihood of resigning him.

Adding old relievers would not be a good idea.  However, adding a younger starter and moving Montero and someone else to the bullpen might work.

Sure, one of the added RPs could be via a SP and moving Montero to RP.  I’m not suggesting going the same route of the RP “buy” that occurred last trade deadline.

Valdez, Mize, Melton, Flaherty, and an acquired SP should be a good enough rotation, although that assumes Valdez and Flaherty pitch as the Tigers had intended them to.  They can finish out the season with that and have Montero at the ready if someone goes down.  It might be enough if Mize were dealt, too.

Ah, old relievers. Every deadline/offseason, there is clamoring, but it never seems to work.

This is not an Avila-Verlander situation, and I wouldn’t want to trade Mize for one dollar more than the value of the comp pick as though this were a simple accounting problem. If were going to trade Mize at all, it should be for on objectively excellent return. Otherwise, I’d prefer keep him and enjoy watching him pitch for my team for the rest of the year, and hopefully into the playoffs.

What do you mean by excellent?

One of the opinions I see/hear is that of extending Mize.  I think he's taking himself to free agency and that he'll find an offer out there that is going to be more than it is worth with the Tigers.  So in my mind, its a matter of what you say about the value of the trade return being more than the comp pick plus the value playoff chase assuming all of the other moves to be made (Skubal and Torres as the main trade opportunities) are with the playoffs in mind.

Remember that the Tigers left a healthy Mize off their magical ‘24 playoff roster. And pulled him after 3-4 innings after each of his playoff starts in ‘25.  Might be a little butt-hurt

Ahh, man! I'd love getting those resumes, but I'd hate making one like that. 🙂

Anyone have a guess what Mize would command? I understand the injury worries, but I'd definitely take a flyer on him if the price and years were right. Nothing more than three years. But, I'm sure he'd want more than that at this part of his career. I'm sure he feels this should be his security contract for good $$$ and probably for more than three years.

Actually, I completely forgot about that in 2024.

Given how he is seemingly always nursing an owie, I can’t see anyone throwing five or more years at him. In fact, I would not doubt the idea of a 2/50, with an option attached to year two. It can be a player option, that’s fine. But if he gets a similar offer from another contending team that he gets from the Tigers, I would think he’d take the change in scenery, especially if it’s the Braves.

If Mize is perceived as an injury concern, teams won’t trade for him for this season.  If they don’t have that concern and he’s healthy the rest of the way and performs well, I think he’s in the 4 yrs/$75-80M territory.

I think most here are undervaluing him.  He has pitched extremely well this season and was an All Star last year. He’s going to command at least a top 100 prospect  if dealt.

Take it to the bank!

When you deposit this prospect or prospects we receive for trading Mize, directly into my hands, please...

Yes, I will go deposit that into the Tigers Prospect Savings Account.
