That would cost them fans and revenue both this year and next year, and for years after, because fans would come to understand that it doesn't matter how much the team wins since Harris and Ilitch could inexplicably blow it all up on what would look like a whim. Maybe you believe this could never, ever happen because fans are rational thinkers who wouldn't even blink an eye at losing Skubal in that way because we are still on a 16-game winning streak and in first place. I would definitely disagree with that. I still hope his decisions are not based on fan blowback. I want him to make decisions for baseball reasons and not because they are popular with fans. If Ilitch vetoes a move because it is bad for marketing, that is different. LOL at fans being rational thinkers. Quote

I don't think he's unpopular, but I don't sense that he's viewed the same way as Verlander and Cabrera were in their primes. Part of it is because there has been so much attention on his contract and pending free agency that many fans are viewing him as only caring about money and not caring about the Tigers. 1 Quote

I would wager that in a poll taken today McG would be most popular and that's likely to persist for a decade. I would suspect Greene, Dingler and possibly even Rogers would also poll well. I agree with your reasoning on what might hurt Skubal. He might win a poll as the best Tiger tough. Quote
Tenacious D Posted July 19 Posted July 19 I think fans, even casual ones, perceive Skubal more like Scherzer. A great player who ultimately will do what he thinks is in best interest. Both Miggy and JV were willing to forego free agency and sign extensions. Even on the verge of a rebuild, JV had to be talked into accepting a trade to Houston. They are perceived to be more loyal. I don’t think there will be any animosity or vitriol towards Skubal if he leaves via free agency. Unless he stays in the AL Central, which seems unlikely. Quote
tiger2022 Posted July 19 Posted July 19 If they trade Skubal at this point while they still have a shot, then they should just move out of Detroit. Quote

I definitely agree on McGonigle. He could end up being the most loved Tiger since the 80s. Not as sure about Greene. He strikes out a lot which can be frustrating for fans. Quote

Ks are frustrating, but if he does enough other things well it’s easy to look past. Quote

The Tigers are his original team and fans view him as smart and hard working. He won't hit as well as Cabrera, but I expect him to be a better all around player. I think he'll be like Bregman as a player and also in terms of home town popularity. Cabrera was a great hitter and very popular in his prime, but he had some off field incidents and some younger fans just remember his last 7 years where he was crap. Quote

AlaskanTigersFan Posted July 20 Posted July 20 If Tigers get swept in Chicago, think they become sellers? Quote

Yes, I think fans get a feeling of discovery when a player comes through the system. They knew about him before other fans did So, he is their guy. Quote

When the TV shows he's doing things that only Ty Cobb has done, it makes people take notice. The kid really has taken this town by storm in just a few months. And to think....he's only going to get better. Pretty scary to think about. Quote

This is what "they're" saying; McGonigle and Cobb are the only two players in Tigers history at the age of 21 or younger to record 100 career hits in less than 100 games. Quote
gehringer_2 Posted July 20 Posted July 20 Kaline had 139 hits in 138 games at age 19. That his age 18 season disqualified him from this list is a little misleading. Still a pretty rarefied comparison - but have to give Mr Tiger his due. Quote

monkeytargets39 Posted July 20 Posted July 20 I hope we the fanbase can just sit back and enjoy McGonigle instead of trying to endlessly compare him to others. 1 Quote

(Cobb also did it at 18/19.) HOWEVER - if you go to the game log breakdown, it is true that he only had 92 hits in his 1st 100 games in his 1st full season, his finished strong to bring the total for the season up to 139 in 138 games. So even excluding his age 18 season McGonigle is ahead of him now. Of course, by his game 138 he may have fallen behind Kaline's pace - which is the kind of thing that you get with cherry picked stats. Quote
